  • Leaf mould is a great mulch and soil conditioner, although I think it's probably a bit too good to be putting on the borders, I prefer to mix it with seed or potting compost for seeds and cuttings. It's also good mixed with compost from the heap for use in baskets and containers, it doesn't add any nutrients, but does improve the structure.

I've used this process before. I found that using the grass box to collect whatever chopped leaves that will come up before raking saves my back some strain. It costs more in fuel, however. I've seen other channels where people collect their leaves into bins then use strimmers to chop the leaves. I have no idea how well the bins hold up to that type of use, but I suspect the bins get thinner and eventually ventilated. I unintentionally left leaves in a full wheeled bin over winter once. In the spring, the leaves at the bottom six to eight inches looked like lace.

Ron Yerke I find that I have to empty the grass collecting box so often that my back feels it anyway with all the lifting off of the box and restarting of the mower. I've not heard of the strimmer in a bin but I'd be a bit worried about lowering the spinning head into the bin especially when it's at waist height?

How many days it takes to decompose?

@gita kokane It's a slower decomposing process than usual composting, making leaf mould takes 12-18 months before it can be used and 18-24 months before it's a fine compost, but you can use the leaf mould as a mulch on your borders after a year or so. Where the worms will break down the leaves further and drag the leaf mould down into the soil giving it more structure.
