Hey! I actually was a huge fan of the sail barge way back when, i had the same question and decided to send lego an inquiry. from what i remember they said the feature was there to: Simulate the destruction of the barge Gain easier access to the jail and thirdly, separate the set so it’s easier to place things. I believe they mentioned it originally being to reload the cannon but later they realized it would be a more fun destruction/accessibility feature
The destruction thing would make sense. But then I’d think that they would at the very least include some other section on the barge like that so have it blowing up in multiple places, or maybe even have a “launching” mechanism like they do on the 2017 Quadjumper.
Finally, someone mentioned the fact that the front of the sail barge comes off. When I first discovered it as a kid, I thought that it was meant to be a play feature I forgot about and decided to watch as many reviews of the set as I could find to see If anyone mentioned it anywhere. I'm sure it was meant to be a play feature that got scrapped for some reason. My best guess is that it was for the prisoner to escape maybe? Who knows.
Aha, I knew about all of these! I heard about the AV-7 one from a review (because like you said, it’s a little more well known than the other two), and I knew about the others because I have both of them myself. I even mentioned the Mandalorian Starfighter one in my review on my old channel (though that hardly counts as barely anybody watched it). Either way, great video! It is indeed super strange that features like these seem to go unnoticed.
Lol, for some reason I find this unreasonably funny and also very much a possibility. I love the idea of the designer going “Screw it, I don’t care anymore!” and just leaving it how it is. 😂😂
I never recognised any of these lol, cool video. The sail barge ones really confusing. Could it be that it’s just built that way as that was the easiest way to get that shape? But I’m confused as to why the bars are up against it lol
If that were the case I think they would’ve just attached it directly to the model via studs, or at the very least reinforces it with better Technic connections and plates.
I'm going to Bliw everyone's mind. Asked My friend who Worked on that Sailbarge, The older one. They did that so If you bought more then one set you could build it longer. You add in a repeat on the back minus two pieces and add two female holes and the pegs slide right in. Sort of how Modulars connect.
I thought that the sail barge play feature is to represent the barge blowing up because the front of it blew off

The 2002 Gunship being secretly a dropship is one of the best hidden play features imo. Love that set.
They just built play features different back then.
6:06 maybe to retract cannon's spring ?
I own the set and NEVER knew that was supposed to be a play feature
The 2012 Manda Starfighter also had a loading ramp that came down and dropped cargo out

lowkey think the barge feature was an aborted function they just forgot about and left in the final model. it’s like entirely vestigial

Hey that’s really cool! Turn the prison into the piloting station and have it show down against the cannon “ship”
The first MTT set from 2000 could open up into a base mode thing

another cool feature i dont see anyone speak about is in the 2005/6 turbo tank. the back cockpit can detatch as a small bunker.
Great video on topics I had never seen before
I knew the Sail Barge one cause I just bought it, and built it a few days ago
Kinda knew the gauntlet class vessels had a ramp even in lego form->SW Rebels.
I have the mando fighter I saw the ramp and the image had gar Saxon in the back so when I got it I was disappointed that it was nor a cargo hold
No-one can argue about the skys colour!! It’s obviously maroon. Duh
I didn't know any of these.

Gotta admit, I smell either a joke, or total BS, and I’m not sure which one. 😂
2:50 MandR actually covered this iirc
I have all three of these, but non of the figures 😢
Escape pod?
For the sail barge?
@crazydog1750 Yes. But I don't think a minifigure could fit very well in that section if at all.
Yeah, there’s no room at all for a minifigure in there.
