- Canon in D is one of the best-known pieces of classical music ever written. It was originally written by the German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel for his Canon and Gigue for three violins and basso continuo (PWC 37, T. 337, PC 358). It is sometimes called Canon and Gigue in D or Canon in D Major. Neither the date nor the circumstances of the composition are known (suggested dates range from 1680 to 1706). Like his other works, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style, and remained in obscurity for centuries. A 1968 arrangement and recording of it by the Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra gained popularity over the next decade. Since then the melody has been adapted for various instruments and recorded by many ensembles. It has also been used frequently in weddings and funeral ceremonies in the Western world.

Such an exquisite piece. I remember melting when the Koreans decided to use this music to open my number 1 favorite Korean film The Classic (2003). 😊 ❤
