Some of the fault lies with the Winthrop School District. You're in Maine (I live in Readfield: right next door). Did you do any research on how electric vehicles preform in cold weather?
They just saw they could get something free from the government.
@@andrewschliewe6392 I'm sure you're right. But did they not look into the costs beyond the free part? A 5-year contract? The expense of maintaining them? Looking into the company before signing anything? The people who okayed this should be fired.

@@andrewschliewe6392 Trust me, they are NOT "free" We are ALL paying for it, as the "government" has no money except the taxpayers money!
DOGE needs to cut wasteful spending just like this. Grants for an electric school bus? You mean the money for one of these that could pay for 2-3 gas or diesel powered school buses that actually work?
Who wants their kids and grandkids riding on top of a big lithium battery. What could go wrong. Parents who worry about school shootings , when they have a much higher chance of being killed in an accident going to ,or coming home from school.
Ha Ha, keep believing. It is just taxpayer money being wasted so no big deal to those officials.

LION ELECTRIC just closed down in Illinois..
No surprise there. International and Blue Bird offer electric buses. Why not buy from established manufacturers? Better yet, don't buy electric buses at all.
@1940limited illinois gave LION Electric 50 million in tax dollars to open a plant in 2023..they took the money and screwed Illinois.
Well, time to go back to good old, reliable Diesel international built buses with bluebird bodies on them😂
Ironically, when they break down, it takes a diesel-powered tow truck to tow it to a garage.
This is what the "inflation reduction act" really gave us
These buses cost twice as much as a diesel bus and carry fewer students. Our local school is operating short runs on flat ground but still has to charge between runs. They had to replace Rear springs due to the weight of the batteries.
Nonsense.
@JohnnyAngel8 educate yourself. $400 billion spent on climate change in the "Inflation Reduction" Act. $1.5 billion spent on "clean" school buses that can't even be used. Have fun knowing you voted for these new problems
110 billion in cleaner energy investments from non government sources. 170,000 jobs in the energy sector, elderly insurance users averaging savings of 800 a year, insulin capped at 35$ a month through insurance, over 500 million towards the Colorado River basin to aid and protect farmers from drought, 575 million to great lakes states to fix infrastructure and other projects to protect communities from extreme weather events, and about 100 other things. Oh and that was in only one year. And you only came away with busses in Maine? Oh boy...
@kennethloki7011 Thank you for spelling out. The Inflation Reduction Act is a key to America's recovery. Many thanks go to President Biden, who got a divided Congress to come together to make it happen.
The biggest challenge to batteries is cold weather, so naturally, one of the most northern states is a no brainer for this tech, as in, only someone without a brain would think was good.
When they said “the road to hell is paved with good intentions “ this is the kind of thing they were referring to.
The ones we have in Austin have caught fire or break down all the time. Even with grants, we got screwed.
Electrics Do NOT work in any Northern States or Canada !!! Even in south Arizona and Florida they will never recover their initial cost within 15 years . Often started my diesels in a heated Garage while they had block and battery heaters plugged in while working in Alaska several years. Also, Electrics will never recover their initial cost during their service life .
Get Biden and Harris to drive them. They aren't doing anything else
Their chauffeur, you mean. These elitists don't do anything themselves except sign bills that loot the citizenry.
And never have!!!
EVs r junk
Oh look the senator for Maine caved in. When this first started she said she would not allow electric vehicles in Maine. I knew they would get to her sooner or later
An electric vehicle in a cold climate... wow, what could possibly go wrong??
Nothing, provided that the EV is proper;y manufactured. These buses weren't. Watch to the end of the video; they say that other nearby towns in Maine have electric buses that are reliable. Likely they weren't made by Lion electric.
@@morlamweb LOL... they won't work in negative temps, bucko...

I’m sure they weren’t told that the range they were sold on isn’t the same in very cold weather. A lot of people are finding that out with all EVs. They always conveniently leave that out.

"We believe in electric busses" this isn't the polar express for Pete's sake
She wants so desperately to be PC, so she's blaming the manufacturer instead of the flawed concept.
Maybe she has to say that, remember if they don't use these buses for 5 years, they are on the hook for the cost of the buses.
The batteries are located between the frame rails and in car speeding can bend the frame in a crash damaging the batterys causing a risk of a fire
In general they are a waste of money
So let me get this straight if a car smashes into a school bus hard enough to bend it frame people can get hurt?????
By the way, they’ve been school bus fires where somebody smashed into a school bus hard enough to bend the frame and set the gasoline on fire. And yes, they still make gasoline school buses.
$490k each and a range of 80 miles.
2-1/2 times as much as reliable diesels.
American EV's suk. Buy BYD.
Brake failure thats pretty unbelievable. Id love some info on how they are upfitted to be electric!?
Probably no power brakes
I see the problem very clearly and it appears that the lady states "they" like their electric buses. Stupid is as stupid does.
And that also applies to you, correct
cause she never payed for them!!!
She doesn't have to work on them or drive them.
I wonder I she actually drives an EV. Or is that for "other people"!
The bus driver tried to use the heater?
Stop using the heater during the winter to improve range, lol.
They have diesel powered heaters in them which poses other problems and dangers.
A huge waste of money and unfortunately they are determined to spend more to fix something that can’t be fixed.
WHEN things go really bad, not to worry the NEWS, will brush off the story.

So great to hear how dependable electric buses are 🤔
Ev busses have very low mileage here in Phoenix due to having to run the Air conditioning...
Whose idea was it to buy them? Maybe since you woke up and voted for Trump, this problem can be solved.

That’s called “bricking” itself! It happens in all new vehicles now because they are dependent on a particular voltage. If that varies, then the system can’t properly run everything and it shuts down, just like when your phone locks up.
Now…..wait till they find out how much the range is reduced in extremely cold weather!
🥶 don't use the heat, or ac depending on your climate..

Agreed, but there is a heater that heats the battery before it starts charging the battery.
The “must use them for five years” sounds like they will have trouble finding bus companies soon.
Not much meat left on the bone if you have to spend more to get less as a business.
My 2000 AmTran T444E has been in flawless service 24 years and will be retired in 6 months. The engine, transmission, and axle is still all original and it has never needed a tow. 250,000 miles, 16,000 hours...it can be stubborn to start it when below 25°F, but it is so reliable.
No need to retire that bus at all except government bureaucracy. Be sure it's not replace with an EV.
@@1940limited probably fails emissions now hence the need to retire
@1940limited state law. Age 20 retire the school bus from a daily route, but we can use them for up to 25 years as a "spare" bus, but our spare buses are actually daily bx they are more reliable than the newer DPF/DEF buses. No rust here, the 25 year rule is more of safety from things like old brake systems, old wiring that could catch on fire, etc..
