Eli Bosnick, Heath Enwright, and Noah Lugeons are hosts of a podcast called "God Awful Movies," which skewers the hideously bad (and unintentionally funny) religious films produced by God's public relations department here on earth.
Seth Andrews joins the GAM team to examine - and skewer - three specific religious movies:
    1) A Matter of Faith
    2) If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do?
    3) International Guerrillas

Oh man! There is so much I want to say right now about this episode!!! I can't believe that others were traumatized by "Thief in the Night" too! My mom joined a Christian cult, and every year they would play this for all the kids (they owned the school we went to as well). It absolutely terrified me!!! I'm only 32 minutes into this podcast, but holy shit! I'm so glad that someone else out there knows what that was like. And the twist to all this is that we're Jewish - It's a long and very bizarre story, a very strange and bizarre story. Thanks for this one Seth, it's fantastic so far.

    • @TheLacedaemonian300
      @TheLacedaemonian300 8 лет назад +13

Thanks,. I'll have to give you a really short version, at least for now.
I was born in Israel in 1974. My parents decided to move to the US when I was two. My parents weren't very religious, but we followed some basic traditions like most Jews do.
I have three younger siblings born in Texas. Over the years my parents were not getting along to say the least.
My mother had spoken with some Christian fundamentalists, Pentecostals. They were members of a small church in Chicago. I was ten years old when my mother told me we were all going on vacation for the weekend to Corpus Christi. It ended up being a trick to get me to go with her, because she knew I was very close to my dad and wouldn't voluntarily leave him.
We arrived in Chicago 22 hours later and went straight into a church, it was July of 1984. It was headed by an old Czechoslovakian pastor and his wife, and I can still remember how fucking messed up what I saw that night in that church was. It was about 300 people screaming and shouting like they were possessed. I was terrified, and had no clue what was going on. This church was as fanatical and controlling as they come.
Fast-forward a year and we were going to the church six times a week, weren't allowed to miss a single service or they send people to your house, shit like that.
The church owned the school we went to, so the indoctrination was around the clock. Couldn't have a phone, no TV, no radio, just a miserable way to live. I really got into the whole Christian thing, and I took it very seriously. I was in constant fear of the rapture, because I never really felt that I was "changed" like they claimed I would be, even though I was the most dedicated kid you would ever see. The fear was real and it was constant, but it came to an end one day after two years of living there.
There was a knock on the door of our tiny one-bedroom apartment with all five of us living in it. I heard my mom screaming, and my little sister who was four came running, crying into the bedroom where I was eating a bowl of spaghetti-o's.
Suddenly I see my dad, and he tells me he came to get me out of there. By this time I was convinced by the church and my mom that he was the devil and I was absolutely mortified. He had one guy tie up my mom, and another guy grabbed me in one arm and my sister in the other. My other brother and sister got away.
Within a week we were in Israel. I remember trying to stay a Christian for a while, even with my dad really hating it because he felt it had destroyed our family. I lived my teenage years in Jerusalem, and let go of religion forever.
My teenage years were very difficult, that's a whole other story in itself. I finally came back to the US, to my mother about five years after, and I've been here since. I was in Israel when the first Intifada (Arab-uprising) broke-out, and it was a scary time, because we lived in an area that was in the midst of a lot of the terror attacks. I have a lot of stories from that time too.
Anyways, this is as short as I'm capable of making the story, and obviously there is so so much more, but time and space is limited.
This is actually the first time I've ever told anyone in I don't know how long, and I've definitely never shared it on the internet. Hope it was worth the read. Peace.

I was rapt. Thanks for sharing. So many wrongs. Hope you have, to the extent possible, put it behind you. Glad you got some relief from this coverage of the films.
You should check out the God Awful Movies podcast. Same guys also do Scathing Atheist and (currently in short hiatus) The Skeptic Rats. You can find GAMcast here on YT and on...libsyn? SA, here on YT, under Noah Lugeons. Also at the eponymous website.

Thanks Bruce. I went to check out the God Awful Movies podcasts right after watching Seth's video, and listened to God's not Dead 2. It was absolutely hilarious! I mean it's seriously funny stuff!
After that I checked to see if "A Thief in the Night" was on YT and sure enough it was. I watched it! It brought back some strange feelings. That song in the beginning hit me like a ton of lead. It's actually a pretty good, doomy song!
I'm gonna check out and likely sub to The Skeptic Rats and Scathing Atheist. I know I've heard those names before. Thanks for all the recommendations. I'm always looking for new, good stuff.

After watching this, I've started listening to the God Awful Movies reviews. They're absolutely side-splitting. These guys are so quick-witted, and the laughs come so fast and furious, that it's a completely draining experience to listen to them. Oh, and I love the fact that the reviews are as long, and sometimes longer, than the movies they're about.

"A matter of faith" is on Netflix, and justifies the monthly fee quite by itself. I watched it with my daughter; after pissing ourselves laughing, we recreated the 'hot rave' dance. An instant classic, and not a dry seat in the house. Additionally, as a teacher myself, I was damned impressed by the chicken and egg question technique, and will endeavour to use it in future.

I'm somewhat confused how he's able to tell those kinds of jokes and still be considered an "SJW" by other "SJWs" (It's in quotes because I think the label is dumb, but I don't know what else to call him, here).

+TheThinkingAtheist I believe the focal point was Eli's sense of humor. Any comments on that?

+Chase Smith (TyphonMetalNerd) in all honesty, there's quite a few "SJWs" with Eli's sense of humor. For example, there three other guys on screen that apparently have the same taste in laughter.
But ya, go look up cognitive dissonance for two other guys that are essentially "sjw" (well, plenty of people on the Internet would label them as such) and their podcast sometimes makes Eli's jokes tame by comparison. In fact I think I remember Seth having a podcast with those guys.
Then there's the Imaginary Friends podcast with Jake that, while the podcast itself is mild (Jake, the host attempts to stick to a "PG-13" rating for his daughter...and generally failing), the comedians that show up are almost as raunchy as Eli gets generally, including the host...just, again, outside the actual podcast.
The gaytheist manifesto (another podcast) had a particular show a few weeks ago with Eli and Jake where they went into details about the lines they draw and the context they stick to in order to illustrate the distinctive difference between them, as professional comedians, joking about rape and transgender and a random person on Twitter.
If you don't want to listen to it, the target of the joke, the context behind the joke, the audience of said joke, and the person saying the joke, all have to come into play.

+Greyghostvol1 First off, that's a great collection of podcasts there (I'm a fan of CogDis, G.A.M. Cast and T.T.A. and I've never listened to the others mentioned, but I'm probably gonna check them out).
Secondly, I get the humor. I laugh my balls off at every episode of GAM and CogDis episode (Seth is more for Thinking, as I'm sure you know). I guess I just never really noticed the similarities before since Eli & Co. are a little more vocal about their more liberal views than others. And since (in my experience) the further left or right you go, the more easily offended people become. Maybe I just misjudged these podcast respective audiences? If so, my bad.
I personally don't care what your politics are, so long as you can back up your veiws with facts and reason. And for the most part, these guys do.

It's so amazing - from 22:29 to 22:31 you can actually SEE that the actor drops the bamboo shoot. They never did a retake of that scene to make it look any convincing. Which reaffirms Eli's hypothesis of "the skills of robbing a ketchup factory" because they refuse to spend any more than bare minimum shrapnel on these atrocious flicks.

In the other cam perspective the guy in the pink-brown-whateverish shirt and with the long hair is Noah Lugeons (Yes it's a nom de plume meant to read like "no illusions") and the follically challenged one is Heath Enwright...
