Thank you gentlemen. After a year as a catechumen, I will be received into the Church next week. I am very anti-ecumenism, since this was one of the main reasons for joining Orthodoxy. But I am incredibly interested in this topic, and I appreciate your unique take on this pan-heresy. Excellent topic
Welcome to the faith brother. What really converted me was reading the life of their many saints, especially Maximus the Confessor, Gregory of Palamas, Paisios, Porphyrios, Spyridon, just to name a few. Easter Orthodoxy never changed their original liturgy from Apostalic succession.
I certainly second Fr. John's observation regarding the younger generation of Orthodox being less inclined towards ecumenism than some well-established clergy. It has been a recurring disappointment to engage in dialogue with certain mature lay Orthodox, and sadly clergy, who seem extremely reluctant to admit what the Orthodox Church believes about itself. Some even demonstrate that they are entirely unaware. As a 'younger person' myself, those of us who convert from sundry christian backgrounds do not convert (typically) at the impetus of crass consumerist sentiments, mere preferences for the superficial trappings of Orthodoxy. We become Orthodox because this is the Body of Christ.
Lol half of these “younger generation of Orthodox” are edgy teen aged converts looking to rebel against their parents. Many burn out within just a few short years. I’ve encountered more than a few.
Former Roman Catholic desiring to come home to Orthodoxy, but trying to avoid ecumenism. I have seen what it did to catholics and I am afraid I see it happening to some Orthodox that I had chatted with. If someone can give a good pointing in the right direction that would help also I hope to be baptized correctly. I almost joined the GOC if America
@@silveriorebelo2920so are you telling seeking truth that he is to come home to a church that throught the visible and supreme authority and infallibile pope that he should attend prayer meetings of Assisi mixed with all kinds of religious beliefs including pagans? Should come home to where crucifixes were hidden and Budda was placed upon the altar where Jesus was offered in what romans called the holy sacrifice of the mass, come home and venerate the false gospel of the Quran, or honor the pachamama and the lists go on. So are Orthodox supposed to come home to that, is this really Christ's Church? I too am a former Roman Catholic and tried to stay but I could not be truly honest to God and to myself I had to leave and come home to eastern Orthodoxy.
Fr John, I am attending a Greek parish and so am directly under the Ecumenical Patriarch. I don’t believe in Ecumenism but personally like ecumenical dialogue (Orthodoxy is the church at the end of the day). The Greek church is closest to me, should I stop attending?
I'm just another laymen in the Church. I had similar questions. The devil loves when we run and run and run. I know that. So my goal is to stick it out with the priest who I love until the Church falls into very direct and outright heresy.
That is his personal act he will be answering to the Lord himself... plus he will be answering for all those he caused to stumble (Matt 18,6) due to his actions. Beauty of Orthodoxy is in it's resilience towards such individual acts that can come from any Bishop including those sitting on a throne of Patriarch. Such personal acts have no impact on other Eparchies led by Bishops who do no endorse such acts and they are not obliged to co go along with the fallen Bishop.
the problem with the Greek-Orthodoxy is that the anti-Latin prejudice is first and paramount in importance, and thereafter the reasons to justify division have been sought throughout the centuries - the denial that the Spirit proceeds from the Father through the Son, which was the standard position in the first centuries is a clear example... and many many other positions, like identifying the use of the leaven bread in the Eucharist as the proof that catholics defend the Christology of Apoliniarius.. and what about the silly importance that is given to the keeping the non-Latin calendar, of course, etc etc
Orthodox Church has never stopped praying and hoping that fallen Rome will repent and come back to it's roots that are in Orthodoxy... however, reality is different as fallen Rome continues to fall even further, latest being blessing of the Sodom and Gomorrah (you know what I am talking about). Your lamenting about the Orthodox slandering fallen Rome is pathetic as our exposing of Rome's heresies comes out of our Christian love for those walking in the direction of the abyss and should have awaken you from such delusional state.
Up until the 20th Century it was. The Classical Protestant Confessions without fail stated that those who did not hold to the Confessions were at risk. The Protestants adopted the Anglican Ecclesiology of Branch Theory when the League of Nations put the kybosh on missions to Africa unless a denomination agreed to remove their exclusionist Ecclesiologies from their faiths. So clearly Protestantism is a false faith.
why are these people slandering the catholic church at each turn? - inventing false things about ecumenism with non-Christians religions etc etc ... they should care for their souls because they forget that not slandering is a commandment of God
So Fr John, if ecumenism is not acceptable to the Church of Christ, then explain why you are in ROCOR-MP, noting the MP at the end now, who have been full members of the World Council of Churches since the 1960's. The WCC is the very seat of Ecumenism, and therefore, heretical. So strange you would condemn something your lot are fully immersed in. The Apostolic Canons judge you severely. I hope you wake up from slumber of deception and find the True Church of Christ, once again. So sad, so many deluded they are following Christ in satanic institutions.
If you condemn all of the Jurisdictions in communion with the MP/EP, or those who are in communion with those in communion with the MP/EP, then there is no Orthodox Church. I assume you are a member of one of the "true Orthodox" who have declared judgement on "world orthodoxy," saying that we are deprived of salvific grace. With what judgment you judge, you shall be judged. If the above is the case, for your sake, you better hope in the righteousness of your Synod before God. May the Lord, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and save us.
Fr John, I'm not condemning you, I don't have to, Christ Himself through the Apostolic Canons, judges you. I don't understand the mindset that condemns something they are involved in, that is a oure oxymoron. Good luck to you (and me) when we are judged.
Fr John I have tried a few times to forward this link to the video with a question to the clergy and lay people of ROCOR-MP, and if anyone can show me just cause why I am deluded in my understanding, I will return to ROCOR-MP. ruclips.net/video/OmdmaQN7oDw/видео.htmlsi=G_1Lh4l0YVscyCLk

to be home to orthodoxy?? the Eastern Church has recognized the authority of the Pope until the 11th century...

Go to ROCOR if you have parish near by...
Join OCA, Antiochian, GOARCH or ROCOR. Western Rite are Eastern Orthodox too. Don’t join the OCA.
Thank you both!

Ecumenism is literally the Blues Brothers "getting the band back together."
Can someone link to a video of EU Bartholomew commemorating the pope as an orthodox bishop. How the heck does that work?!
