Rest In Peace Leiji Matsumoto, my friend. You now sail the seas of the afterlife. You gave us the a universe of infinite possibilities, true men, heroes, and heroines. For that, I am forever in your debt, and can never thank you enough.
I do sound design for a living now and this score and the original sound effects used in the Anime are one of the reasons I got into Sound Design, scoring and foley work. This soundtrack can still move me to tears and inspire me to 'get up and give it all I have'
If the Earth had a song, this would be it. All the sadness and love and dreams and hope of humankind is in this song. Such a fragile and unique place we have here, but all alone. I cannot hear it without feeling so absolutely sad.
Pain, despair and loss all permeate this piece. But beneath it all there is a single thread of determination. Determination to not give up on hope or love. To strive to live another day perhaps that tomorrow will bring change.
One particular scene, the ship got one last view of Earth but not in its destroyed state, but as it was *before* the destruction, as the ship had gone faster than the time it took light to get there, and so they were looking at the last life of an already dead planet from far away. As a kid, the idea of overtaking light itself and seeing backwards in time was mindblowing and the deep emotions they pull out of you were almost unbearable. You could feel the longing for the impossible and the wisp of hope for the unlikely event of success that you were almost certain would not be.
theme song of my life. Been around the world, combat... somehow it stays with me. no one would understand that. Star Blazers was life altering for me. Inspired my love for sci-fi. I imagine most would never get that. really brings back memories.
My dad is a massive nerd like me and showed me the original series in 2007. Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato is partly responsible for my love of sci-fi too. It was an awesome anime and the remake was really good too
Back in the late '70s, I found the album "Symphony Suite Yamato" it has all of the major pieces, beautifully rendered, as well as the translated lyrics for "Scarlet Scarf". I got it through Books Nippon.
The stars are born and the stars will die, but the breath of the cosmos that is passed from life to life is a cycle that will never end. -Admiral Juzo Okita.
In the credits of the episode where they attack Pluto, when the captain says “we leave you Earth but not for long. We will return” I almost cried. It’s like a son going off to war saying goodbye to his mother promising to return home. Such a powerful soundtrack
"I cannot bear to see what has become of Earth. once green and growing with blue lakes and silver streams, great rivers and mighty seas, now all gone. only day and burning desert left. Radiation everywhere." - Captain Abraham Avatar.
You made things right in the end, Captain. And you paid the ultimate price. But you didn't come to this dance expecting to hear the last song. You knew your end was near and you faced it with courage and dignity that helped the crew complete the mission. And complete it they did!

Will we truly be able to last that long considering current circumstances? But if we do, perhaps we can reach for distant worlds that we can only dream of going to.
This brings me back memories of the old Starblazers series as a kid. Last night, I told a friend of mine in describing Starblazers/Space Battleship Yamato 2199 that if you were to cross "Battle of the Planets/G-Force" with Doctor Who's Genesis of the Daleks....
I agree with the others, hauntingly beautiful! And feeling what others are saying, having heard this as a kid, watching it on tv, and in the movie theater, this has shaped who I am.
