Wow, this was my exact dream that I was planning to make into reality back in 2012. Gave up on it because I thought it wouldn’t work. Guess I was wrong. Marvincent Acuña Actually solar panels (especially future multi juction with 60-70% estimated efficienty) can add to flight time of the plane depending on how long it stays in the air, By covering the plane you can maybe squeeze in that extra 5% air time to take less solid state batteries with you so you can add in more people. The panels are very light btw. Solar powered airplanes aren't feasable unless you want something private in the future that goes above the clouds at slow speeds and has a reasonable size with retractable heli props for easy landings so that it can be used as hobby/long term but nearly free transport. But honestly in that sense I could see it being used by the average joe with a pilot license to save some money on plane tickets :p.

From my experience the best part of being a pilot is the machine you got in front of you. and then once you are in the sky, its usually just you and nature. its beautiful. just some thing you should do before you die is to fly a plane. You will love it.
With the pacific, honestly as an engineer I'd say to have a ship capable of 25 knots cruising just follow them around from below. Just in case they had to abort and crash into the ocean. Or better yet, get a large enough ship with enough space to land that thing on it, and given it's just as fast as the plane, it could land like a helicopter.

For Solar energy planes to be even remotely viable for the industry, we need more efficient solar panels. This was just a plane with skeleton structures and 1 pilot but it is a proof of concept nonetheless.
Solar panels are around 20-22% efficient these days. Even if they could be 100% efficient and that translated directly to a five-fold increase in top speed (which it wouldn't), the top speed would be a measly 140 mph. Commercial jets today fly at around 500 mph. The problem is that solar power just isn't very concentrated. Fossil fuels are great because they are essentially pre-concentrated solar power that is easy to turn into usable energy.
it doesn't have any practical use. Besides combustion engines are better in every way, this is just a experiment to show what we MIGHT be able to do in the future

For Solar energy planes to be even remotely viable for the industry, we need more efficient solar panels.
This was just a plane with skeleton structures and 1 pilot but it is a proof of concept nonetheless.
Solar panels are around 20-22% efficient these days. Even if they could be 100% efficient and that translated directly to a five-fold increase in top speed (which it wouldn't), the top speed would be a measly 140 mph. Commercial jets today fly at around 500 mph.
The problem is that solar power just isn't very concentrated. Fossil fuels are great because they are essentially pre-concentrated solar power that is easy to turn into usable energy.

They then had the temerity to suggest that air travel was the transportation method of the future. With a widely developed road system, a network of rail links -plus shipping routes covering the globe, surely anyone can see that such a concept would be a non-starter!
