HUSKY ACTION: As early as 1942, when the American and British Allied forces were victorious in the North African battlefield, the Allied forces planned to counterattack and recover Europe, but the two sides had great differences on the landing site. The United States advocates that the war in North Africa should be ended as soon as possible, so that it can use its hands to cross the English Channel in one fell swoop, open up a second battlefield, and quickly defeat Fascist Germany. But the British considered the crossing of the strait a futile adventure that could lead to annihilation, rather than attacking from the "soft belly" of Italy's Sicily. In order to reach an agreement, the two sides held the Casablanca Conference, and the two sides agreed: first to solve the Italian problem, and then to consider the landing in France. After the meeting, the formulation of the Husky Action Plan was launched in London, England, but due to various factors, the progress was very slow. Later, Eisenhower was responsible for the planning work, and the planning team moved to Algiers and was named "Group 141" at the same time.
Ah... Here in Italy, after having lost Africa, fascists started to run. None of them left orders to the army and Sicily was literally left alone to be taken by the Allies with no resistance. It was said that the fascist hierarcs considered at that point lost the war and all further efforts was pointless. But that doesn't mean they had to leave. They did it, with Mussolini that tried to go in Germany and the King that started to deal with the Allies to reach an agreement for the surrender. In order to liberate the country from fascists and regain control over it, back from the imperialist and fascist politics and ambitions of Mussolini. The King, Vittorio Emanuele the Third was an individual deeply tired of war due to what he experienced during ww1. Traumatic effects that put him in a second place for the whole period of the fascist regime in Italy. He believed that since fascists was strong enough to lead the country and was generically accepted by the bulk of the population, he could have left to them and to Mussolini all the responsabilities and powers to lead the country. The war showed he badly estimated the situation. But since he was depressed and tired, he never applied for resolute actions. Indeed, the dealing with the Allies was the only time he acted like a king. After that, the fact he left Rome to join the Allies in South Italy deeply afflicted the moral of our country, not only the Army. Many decided to stay on the side of the fascists exactly for that reason. And when you hear Italians talking about the "betrayal" they generally refers to the King escape the day previous of the surrender. Everyone in Italy entrusted Mussolini and thought he was the lead of the country. But once the things went bad, terribly bad due to Mussolini himself, everyone turned again to see what's the king was doing. But no one ever judged the fact that Mussolini himself was escaping like a coward when the partisans captured him. The second best action of VE3 was abdicate in favor of his son, Umberto the Second. Also known as "King of May" because his regency lasted for the only month of May. But despite that, he was a way more dignitful King than his father. Attached to the people, a soldier who fought in the first lines, and had at heart the needs of the country. He was the guy who proposed and made into effect the Referendum for the Form of the State. The referendum, the first to include also women in Italy since its foundation, that decided if Italy had to become a republic or remain a parliamentary monarchy. It won the republic for a bunch of votes, kinda like 1.5 million votes was missing so technically we still doesn't know who truly have won. But republican politicians declared the republic even before the results was completely scrutinized. Also because a republic was well accepted by the Allies and their armies in Italy was able to enforce law by themselves. From tha point to today passed 75 years roughly. Not all of splendid friendship with the western powers, but definitely we became founding members of NATO and EU strongly believing in those institutions. That's because before ww2 we was basically alone and surrounded by enemies. We had no trust in French, Austria or Germany and even Russia, Turkey/Ottoman Empire and other minor powers was hostile. After the war, we had a team to play with and within. We wasn't anymore alone. What we don't had in terms of territory or resources, we could have obtained through diplomacy, collaboration and always backed by one of the strongest military alliance ever seen in human history. It's like Germany. They lost the war, but by creating the EU, the first agreements, they got the resources they needed to fuel their economy, to live better, rich, wealthy, healthy etc. Without the needs of waging war against some kind of far distant colony or some big enemy power. Even France, their main antagonist in Europe was now their strong allies. And British and Americans too. So Germans chill out, became democratic because they feared nothing anymore, started working and producing, and become one of the best country in Europe. The only problem left around was Mr. Stalin and his USSR with the Varsaw Pact. 😑 But until no one started a war with them, things would have been nice and dandy.
Fun fact about ww2: Queen Elizabeth II served militarily in the war: Elizabeth II, the former Queen of Britain, was very keen to join the ranks of the combatants in the war, even though her father, King George IV, tried hard to discourage her from doing so.
