Zappa started oot in the 60s and was still at it in the 80s. His band constantly changed but he covered many genres of Music from Rock to Jazz to Classical and a few inbetween.

Frank Zappa composes all music and lyrics but improvises his guitar solos. All songs carefully rehearsed. But all shows are unique! The band is usually named "the Mothers of invention" or just "Mothers". From 1966 to late 70s there were roughly three "incarnations" of Mothers - always the very best musicians available. Later he changed musicians for each tour. He mixed any kind of lyrics, sometimes quite serious like "Troubles every day", but usually provocative, or just silly with advanced experimental music of any genres usually mixed. Its a world of its own and it is huge! (60+ albums released during his life time and even more than 60 after his death). Check something instrumental like "Whats new in Baltimore" or "Chunga's revange" (video of the art of how to start a show - yes, the one with the Hawaii shirt!). Otherwise the classical introductions to Zappa is "Inca roads".

This song is based on the true story of young 20-year-old Steve Vai (his "stunt guitar" player) during his first tour with Zappa. Vai hooked up with a famous groupie and had the various escapades as described in the song's lyrics.
Frank would talk with the band members about any kind of weird experiences they were having on tour and Steve told Frank of his dalliance with Laurel Fishman.
Steve Vai never intended for it to go any further than a little chat with Frank. Frank immediately put the story to music, embarrassing the fk out of Vai, and that's the way it went in Zappa's Universe.
Terry Bozzio, the drummer in the last Zappa video you reacted to, told Frank he was fond of a publicity photo of guitarist Punky Meadows from a group called Angel. Next thing you know, Frank whips up a song about Terry being in love with Punky, writing Punky's Whips, and Terry had to sing a good portion of it.
You got to be legendary if you were in Frank's band and foolish enough to tell him a story of your experiences on the road.
Check out Punky's Whips. It features a ripping guitar solo from Frank to boot!

Punky Meadows thought it was hilarious too and since he was cool about it Zappa invited him to jam at his house.

I hadn't heard that, but wouldn't be surprised. I know that Punky was cool about his name being used in the song. WB was afraid of a lawsuit and pulled the song from the album.

Yeah, he was gonna jam on stage with them for the track which Zappa wanted but he got some blowback from the band and decided against it. So he got a front row seat and was invited to chill with Zappa after the show. I think Frank was the kind of guy to poke people without much thought to see what they were made of - he didn't really care about all this pretentious stuff, he appreciated people who had some humanity and levity more than anything. @@Royale_with_Cheeze

A comment for the Al Gore rhythm: "I write and play music for myself, my sole intended audience" - F.Z. Frank Hired Steve when Steve was 18 years old because he could transcribe Frank's guitar solos which were never written out and practiced, but always spontaneous and improvised. The song is a true story about Steve's escapades with a groupie. Zappas universe is the deepest most eclectic rabbit hole one can fall into, it will last you the rest of your lives should you choose to dive into it, and it is awesome!

Frank Zappa tours with a rotation of some of the best musicians in the world. It is never about the lyrics and is always about the instrumentals. The Illinois enema bandit is sung so seriously but funny as hell.

Since no-one's mentioned - the singer on this cut was Robert (or Bobby) Martin, also a multi-instrumentalist who prior to his Zappa job had been an orchestrator/top session man on the classic Philadelphia soul records. He's also known as a fitness instructor!
FTR - for many years FZ alternated between records billed to Frank Zappa and records crediting the band The Mothers Of Invention (originally a bar band that he took over and transformed) - but then he lost ownership of the Mothers name, and for a while there was a notional band called Zappa before his "solo" status became undeniable circa 1980. In fact, Mothers or others, it was never a "band" really, as early as 1966 he ruled with a rod of iron.

The man was Frank Zappa, from Palmdale CA. The band was auditioned and hired. He was the writer, of EVERYTHING. He was a composer of classical music and rocl. He had the best band in town, always. Prince was a bitch and couldn't say wassup to him at a hollywood party. He was Jimmi Hendrix friend and Jimi respected Frank. Sgt Pepper was inspired by Frank Zappa.

Frank had a lot of odd friends. He loved AC/DC, Grand Funk Railroad (produced an album for them), The Rolling Stones (Brian Jones got pissed when Frank effusively praised them at a party, thinking he was mocking them but he wasn't), and Black Sabbath. All simple straightforward groups that the critics often smeared as lowbrow. He also did some help on the production of Beggar's Banquet since he became pretty friendly with Mick Jagger. Apparently his intrusion into the Banquet sessions made Keith Richards a bit jealous and he stormed out iirc, which is a shame because I bet Frank loved Keith's rhythm playing, it was so raw and unpretentious.

Frank regularly did a sort of band report where everybody has to check in with what's going on with their lives and somebody did a report on Steve Vai and the encounter with Laurel (Fishman) so Frank wrote the song about it. This goes back at least to 1971 and the movie 200 Motels wherein Mark Volman (one of the two lead singers) says regarding fake Jeff Simmons (who'd left the band) who has imbibed some sort of psychedelic and was receiving conflicting advice from a devil on one shoulder, an angel on the other amidst DONOVAN on the wall-mounted TV preaching peace and love: "We gotta get him back to normal before Zappa finds out and steals it and makes him do it in the movie! Which is why Simmons left the band in the first place. META. Fake Jeff Simmons was played by Ringo Starr's chaffeur who also held down the bass in the movie's live performances.

Another cool reaction video from you guys and gals, how about doing a reaction video to the Irish guitar legend. Rory Gallagher - Laundromat live at Montreux (1975). Millions of us consider Rory Gallagher one of the greatest guitarist of all time, he sold over 30 million albums thru the 1970's. Rory concerts are very high energy with great guitar playing. Rory Gallagher is a great music rabbit hole to go down, thank you and enjoy.
