I work for a hospital and spend much of my day on the phone trying to talk to insurance companies (not billing or claims) and some of them have become so impossible to actually contact ANYONE who can actually talk to us to sort out issues that they created through their AI nonsense that we have refused to renew contracts with them. Because we are the only hospital system in the tri-county area, if they don’t have a contract with us then they aren’t able to offer insurance at all in about 1/4 of our state.

Also mass layoffs should be held accountable for the economic impact.

    • @Antoniocastagnoli
      @Antoniocastagnoli 3 месяца назад +15

Actually, we do work way less in terms of physical energy to accomplish tasks. We’re also way more productive because of computers.
So, why we’re not working 4 days a week? Simple… that was a society decision. In some European countries (France, for example), they technically work almost 4 American days a week. In France, they work 35hrs a week, divided in 7hrs a day, 5 days a week.
The point is: it was some sort of society choice with cultural aspects. US society, instead of deciding to work less because of the productivity increase, decided to make more money. You could chose to work 35hrs a week, making the same money as before, and enjoy the productivity increase, or keep working 40+ hours a week and make way more money. The US society is way more consumerist than Europeans, and money is never enough.
The current AI revolution might literally change that in America. Simply because it boosts productivity exactly in the tasks that the US workforce moved its efforts towards after the automation boom of the industrial revolutions (steam machines, electric machines, electronic machines - aka computers). The US workforce concentrates a lot in the creative work and problem solving. This new generation of AI can boost productivity in these “super human” tasks.

Companies don't want to admit they over hired during the post-pandemic hiring frenzy. AND they want to message to the Street that they are being thought leaders in AI because it bumps their stock. These are the two reasons the CEOs are saying this. Most CEOs are not sophisticated enough to actually understand the tech they are espousing. The press is playing into this AI frenzy. I have not seen an example where AI can replace a human yet. This is probably pointless, but there is a truth here that is being dodged by these AI tech companies - and many people don't seem to get it. These programs run on other people's work. These companies scrapped the internet for data based - examples, photography, art, Illustration, and other types of content, without permissions. They are getting away with it because these content creators are individual peasants (not big corporate entities with big legal budgets). If these companies fed in Walt Disney cartoons characters, and people were using the AI programs to create Disney style character content - Disney would have the legal muscle to sue them into oblivion. Not so with the individual peasants (using this term to describe people lower than upper class). Same goes with ripping off the vocals of singers, with big enough names - like ripping Disney, could cause a problem.
Bottom line, if these AI programs weren't allowed to rip off actual individuals' work, it would be a completely different situation, in most cases.
The fact that this wasn't shut down in the first legal examination indicates clearly - this is about a two tiered legal system, and the amount of money you have to fight the issue = equals who gets to do what.

Now tech bros who can't draw or paint and have no creative ideas themselves have the audacity to call themselves artists, ripping off and stealing the work of actual artists. Artists, designers, illustrators, animators etc were all encouraged to put our portfolios online and had no idea our work would be stolen. For some reason nobody is stopping these tech companies despite the clear legal and ethical violations that are taking place. It is the stuff of nightmares for artists. My only hope is that people still value actual art rather than robot images. I was thinking AI art is the equivalent of Primark products. I think they will also automate enough processes that they will ultimately replace themselves. I spent the last 10+ years as a project manager in the network infrastructure space for a large bank. In the near term (I would say around 12-18 months) almost the entire process will be plug n play automation. A data center employee will roll a prebuilt rack onto the floor and once they pop a power cord and a couple network cables in they walk away.

Yes, a marketing team can create a whole campaign using AI a fraction of the cost, but they won't be able to copyright any of those AI generated images. The company will still own trademarks, but their ads are going to be a very attractive avenue for satire and even attacks ads and there will be nothing they can do about it. I suspect the AI's not owning copyright laws will apply to other areas, too. AI written tech manuals, magazine articles, and other content will all be public domain.

Hey Bryan, as a person whose job involves LOTS OF CODING on a daily basis, I don't think coding based jobs are going anywhere for three main reasons.
    1. Writing your own code takes days to write and hours to debug. Coding with ChatGPT takes hours to implement and days to debug. Coders and companies prefer their own code.
    2. Companies have strict policies against having proprietary code to be put on or taken from generative AI repositories for learning models.
    3. Most jobs need solutions to complex problems and tasks VERY SPECIFIC to the company, which only a learnt engineer exposed to the company's coding environment can understand.
The layoffs in tech (at least in the industries my colleagues and I are working in) are happening because companies believed that AI is the way forward and they went on hiring sprees, but suddenly they figured that this many new hires aren't sustainable for them. Thank you for covering this. There are too many out there downplaying AI's near-future and current impact to white collar jobs. A lot of tech folks are saying tech companies simply overhired during the pandemic. While true, they did need the headcount due to higher demand for products & services during that time, and now, these companies are laying people off so they can funnel that cash flow to develop AI. So, they're spending money anyway, but not in the area we'd hope (talent development). AI erodes the need to hire as many humans, especially entry-level skilled talent.

    Greetings, Brian!
An off-topic comment. I have a question regarding your last newsletter (“Are you in danger of becoming obsolete in your career?”). I do not dispute what you have said in the newsletter - your message is a valid one and hits home for me.
In my current role there is no space for promotion, my job itself is very “niche”. What’s worse, there is no professional development or learning new skills on the job. Basically, it is just a paycheck, BUT I am able to save money into the “rainy day fund” because of being in lower cost-of-living area.
Now, if I want to get a “real” job with more energy, more teamwork, more potential for learning, I will need to move to a high-cost of living area. However, there I will be living paycheck to paycheck, no savings, long commutes etc. Will I get any promotions, though? I do not think so, nepotism / cronyism in Canada is off the charts. So what is a solution? How not to become obsolete, if one cannot afford to move to another job / another location?
    I would appreciate you response!

At my last job where I was laid off amid the pandemic, the technology there kept on evolving to the point they no longer really needed me such as when it took me 3 or 4 days to mail out flyers would be more efficient to email the same info to the same amount of people in just 3 or 4 seconds, whatever they can do attempting to reduce human error. As someone who is from the Ed-tech industry, who deals with teachers on a daily basis but isn't a teacher, let me just clearly say -- AI as it exists now will never replace actual teachers. Supplement teachers, sure, and schools that uses AI well won't need to advertise as high teacher-student ratios. But too much of a teacher's job demands not IQ but EQ. How to calm down student X, encourage student Y to pay attention, persuade parent Z that their kid needs help in a certain field, etc.
A lot of teacher's routine duties like coming up with basic lesson plans, grading assignments, and even teaching children in the classroom, etc are ALREADY automated by various Ed-tech products. What we can't replace is the emotional "face" of teaching, and until AI get a lot more cognizant and can deal with everything from tantrum-throwing-kids to aggressive-parents-in-denial, I just don't see them replacing teachers.
It's why people say -- if you want to find a more AI-proof job, get a career that has less structured work and work that demands more social interaction/EQ (Kai-fu Lee's AI Superpowers probably explains this best)

I've talked with co-workers on this and warned them on this subject. These are employees that are complacent with their jobs and don't want to push their skills. AI is dependent on mass information that it can be fed (bots indexing sites), and it can only provide results based on that information. We had a joke in the office that we could replace some of our employees with 50 lines of code. No joke, we had those employees in support. They were the ticket pushers who didn't want to put two thoughts together on an issue. This is exactly where AI comes in to play. You need to be in a field that requires thought and can solve issues without a simple Google search.
