I suppose the ultimate appeal of 'Casablanca' (apart from being a great mixture of thriller, suspense, melodrama and comedy) is that it shows an embittered self-destructive man regain his inner humanity and self-reliance and with that conviction be able to sacrifice his own happiness for the greater good. That's mythical.
Very, very true, and Bogart gets that across perfectly. Bogart is often, I think, not given the credit he deserves as an actor. People appreciate him, but I don't think some fully realize just how many layers his characters can have.
The Cinematic Packrat That's true. I read that Paul Henreid didn't rate Bogart as an actor (just a movie star), but I felt that was a kind of snobbishness on Henreid's part. When Bogart was given the chance to do something different he always delivered. He plays a romantic lead in 'Casablanca' and he's completely at home in the part. He makes everything seem real and natural.
I think you liked "it happens one night" better, because of the ridiculous chemistry. But Casablanca is the movie with the most memorable lines. Nevertheless, both are excellent movies. Keep up your great work
It Happened One Night's chemistry is certainly part of it. It also has great comedy, too. Casablanca isn't a comedy per se, but it has comedy in it. It's goos comedy but not quite up there with It Happened One Night. But you're right, they're both solid films. Thank you for watching and for the kind words! :)
There are two schools of opinion on this movie, those who think it is the greatest movie ever made or one of the greatest movies ever made I am of the first opinion.
David Alkhed: I am trying to get quicker with them. Sadly, other projects and real life stuff often gets in the way, but I'm working on reducing the time between each video. Thank you for watching! So glad you like the videos! :)
While I really like "It happened one night" it does not have the same gut punch that "Casablanca" has. For that matter, it would be more reasonable to compare it to another Capra film, "It's a wonderful life", another movie that delivers a solid gut punch. While 'It happened" is a clever movie it never delivers on the emotional level of the other two and in fact, at least I think it is a fact, both of the latter movies have remained in the cultures consciousness where as "It happened" is mostly appreciated by buffs. Not by itself a proof and yet there is a positive love for "Casablanca" and It's a wonderful life". Time will tell if that changes but for now that's the way I see it.
Interesting take. It Happened One Night is certainly more a fun romp than Casablanca, but I just enjoyed it more. Casablanca certainly isn't bad by any means. I just prefer the Capra film. Thanks for watching by the way and sharing your thoughts.
@@TheCinematicPackrat1 It Happened One Night does have more comedic punch because it was one of the first "screwball comedies." You are comparing it, despite Casablanca's wit, to a drama.
7:00> 🤔Don't you get this less 'natural' love story? The POINT, superbly handled and by intent less satisfying. Ilsa doesn't (and they all didn't) know with whom she'd end up.
David Alkhed: I use Pinnacle Studio 14. I don't know what number Pinnacle is up to now, but that version is an older one. It's not the best program and it has it's limitations. It also has its share of bugs but it's fine if you know how to work around the limitations and the bugs. I know a lot of people who do online video reviews like Adobe (I believe Adobe After Effects but I could be wrong on that, there are multiple different versions of Adobe) Window computers and Final Cut for Macs. I used Final Cut for a school project once and it was pretty cool, but I didn't get to use it enough to discover all its strengths and weaknesses. Both Adobe and Final Cut can be expensive, so if you want to start out with a cheaper program, like Pinnacle, and go from there, you can do that, too. To rip DVDs I use Handbrake. You should be able to find a free download of Handbrake online somewhere. Let me know if you need any more advice. Would be glad to help in anyway I can! :)
Given that the planning for the North African invasion was underway while the film was being made, the planners at the War Department must have been very nervous about the locale and surely did everything possible to hold the release of the film until AFTER the invasion had come off reasonably successfully. The lines have been taken on by generations following to express wonderful irony and wit.
Excellent review! I agree with everything you said about it. Casablanca, like Gone with the Wind, is among my favorites, and I admire you for aknowledging its strong points, even though you don't exactly love the movie. While I agree that It Happened One Night is one terrific picture, I have to disagree that it's better than Casablanca, because in my opinion, the latter is far more superior, but hey, it's your opinion, and I respect it. :) I subbed your channel, and I'm looking forward to your next videos. :) If you accept suggestions, maybe you could review All About Eve and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Bette Davis is stellar in both pictures, and I'm really curious to hear your thoughts about them.
+Vlad Sicoe Oh, thank you so much! So happy you liked it and that you're so civil about our differing opinions. Thank you so much for the subscription! I really appreciate it. I am still tolling away the new video. It's a really long one and doesn't have to do with the Oscars. After that, I'll be doing a short Oscar video followed by the videos for Gentleman's Agreement and Hamlet (which I've watched already). I've never done suggestions before. Mainly because it takes me so long to get anything done that I don't have time to do them. I may start doing them eventually, and if I do, I'll certainly keep Baby Jane in mind. Since All About Eve won Best Picture, I will definitely be reviewing that eventually (hopefully before the year is out). Thanks again for watching!
He does. He's so excellent. It's too bad he didn't win Best Supporting Actor for this or the three other movies he received the nomination for. Thanks for watching by the way!
Actually... I just realized something. I'm not used to commenting on video essays and having the essayist respond to it. Is that why I commented the first random thing that came to my head? I would've given some overall thoughts or some valid criticism - which freakin' precious to you - had I taken notice of your below-1K viewcount. Man, you will grow on RUclips. And your comments will change.
Like the captain, I am "shocked! Shocked!"😬 how one so film-steeped misses on crucial points that elevate this one? As with Teflon, the main impacts seem not to stick. So sad.
Hola buenas noches amigo me llamo Cristian rojas esa el una gran joya de cine película original clásicos que por primera vez lo vi en canal del cable TCM casa blanca 1942 yo recomiendo ver ojalá que veíamos en canal abierto de la red
You're so right. They're singing "Die Wacht am Rhein," which is a song based on the historical enmity between the Germans and the French. The German national anthem is "Deutschland uber Alles"
Could you tell me how you do your videos? Because I'm trying to make movie reviews just like you, but I don't know what program to use. Can you give any tip?
The Oscar should have went to Hal B. Wallace but Jack Warner Beat Wallace to the stage and he took the statue and kept it for himself!! Wallace left Warners when his contract was uo because of this and went on to have a very good independent Career!! Warner ruined their relationship over that Oscar!!
My God, is the Packrat's voice the most annoying I've ever heard. One other thing, the French weren't singing their national anthem against the German national anthem. Yes, that's the French national anthem, but that's not the German national anthem.
Hey man good review. You know I have a channel where I review movies and I have a review for this one. I don't know if you would be interested to check it out and see what you think. Again great review :)

"Casablanca" (1943) is one of my favorite films!
@Randy White While "Mrs. Miniver" won the Best Picture Oscar for 1942, "Casablanca" won the Best Picture Oscar for 1943.
smit4459 still came out in 42 though 😂
Arguably Hollywood's greatest movie.
