I have no idea why Land Rover thought it'd be a good idea to remove the Center diff lock from the Discovery 2. Basically the Discovery 2 is just an AWD with traction control and a low range gearbox. You need the CD to lock to make it true 4WD
Mike B Ahh but you can buy the kit to make it difflock and didn't they put it back on 2004 as last production ones yes I agree should be standard but that's are great UK for yer...
Nah he's a good lad and he new from my previous videos of the lane what he was getting into. It was all about getting him through with minimal damage. For a bog standard road car it did a lot and showed how good the DISCO can be. I was pleased with this film. It came together well in the end helped along by some entertaining lads on the trip!
To be fair, it does look as if the Disco has "all terrain" tyres, rather than off-road "mud-plugging" ones - so not surprising it had a bit more difficulty than the others.
No mate. We usually just increase our clearance with a lift, alter the bumpers to give better entrance and departure angles and stick on some muds. That's usually enough to get through most UK tracks.
you pass though some areas that are of historical importance to the welsh nation. Can i ask if you stay on these lanes? Some of these lanes have been used for many hundreds of years.
+Llywelyn ap Gruffydd I'm not sure what you mean mate? We are green laners. We only use the legal rights of way so yes we stay on the green lanes. Unless that is we go onto sites owned privately organised by Welsh companies in Bala forest. We pass through many areas of historical importance, not just in Wales and respect them equally. That's all sort of obvious isn't it?
+lowrangers2012 Unfortunately someone has shown a distinct lack of respect and destroyed the old stone gatepost, either by using it to winch up or just slamming into it. Either way, it's broken now.
I had heard that and can only speculate on how it happened. Why you'd ever winch from it is beyond me. Not everyone is a green laner. Some people are just stupid vandals.
I liked how at 2:46 all man were like: Bruuhhhh come on are you really gonna turn to the side. And the woman(you can see her hands) was like: Oh my Goooooood 😱😱😱😱😤
The Disco is a m.y.'03 so had just the open CDL with the TC..... If he change the open CDL with one with the locker he will go through all that lane with no help
WOW What a lane!! that would require a good thourough inspection of ones car NO MATTER WHAT BRAND before setting out on such an adventure. Hopefully I wil be able to experience it and the scenery before the ramblers convince the authorities to close it down...
Less than £1k for a decent 16-20yr old Suzuki Grand Vitara will get you on many many lanes without mod's, maybe just get some AT tyres with good tread depth
like you videos but noticed that no one seems to air down their tires to aid in traction just bouncing and sliding all over the place would love to go laning in the UK located in the states
+Andrew Ward I wouldn't exactly say there's lots of bouncing and sliding all over the place! However, your largely correct and its more to do with the terrain in the UK. What you don't see is the tarmac miles we have to do between each lane. Its a matter of finding the right pressure that will cover all the days terrain. Some people run it high so they get better motorway manners, some people run it low all the time and cope better off road. My BFG MT's run at about 20psi for a days laning but 40 when I know it will be running close to home. It has been known for us to air them down on a trip but it's rare.
Have done, without any issue. In reality I find middle ground most of the time and rarely change the pressure unless I know I'm heading for a period of prolonged road use.
Hiya, great videos as always, but out of curiosity are these lanes available for Public use or do you have to be part of a tag along tour or some form of private sectors if so do you have links to any of these as would love to drive these lanes and don’t have an locations aswell as I can seem to find them
All of these lanes are open to the public although this specific one is currently closed for the winter. I'd suggest you join a good organisation like ATUK. Very modest cost and you'll get loads of help and advice with regard to lane locations.
Its difficult in so much as there seems to be a strong anti 4x4 feeling and a class of people who want 4x4's banning from country lanes. Its not difficult to go if you plan properly and stick to the rules but the amount of legal lanes is ever decreasing so we all get funnelled on to a smaller number of lanes making the anti 4x4 people dislike us more. Vicious circle that will probably result in a full ban one day!
+lowrangers2012 Yes agree. I'd say in Wales there are far more of us against the destruction of our countryside by you off-roaders than there are for it. It's just a matter of education about the ecosystem and wildlife. It's a shame that it will take a ban for you to finally stop destroying our countryside but on the bright side maybe there will be some countryside left for your children to enjoy when they grow up.
Completely clueless. Get off your arse and do your research. There will be a fair few private land owners, b&b's and petrol stations that will disagree with you and as for education, jeez you cant evidence anything you've said. Its just a mad rant that was incorrect from your very first sentence making you look pretty foolish!
lowrangers2012 We have had several meetings about allowing green laning around Llangollen to continue. Despite opposition from many locals your permission to continue remains but it is on a knife edge. Maybe you do get tarred with the same brush as illegal off roaders but with Denbighshire recent press release about the thousands of pounds of damage caused to our countryside this could be the last year that you can come to Wales. I really do not care if you continue to off road in England. By all means destroy English countryside. If I'm not allowed to rant about the destruction of the countryside in my own country then what the hell.
+Alison Reid so to clarify. Your first comment about the video showing a national park, was incorrect. You've said you're an ecologist yet you say 4x4 use is reducing bird numbers. That is also incorrect. You seem mentally incapable of separating off-roaders from green laners. As for the beauty of nature, why do you think we green lane? Just because we don't enjoy it in the same way you do, why should you discriminate against us? So Denbighshire eh. So Alt-y-Badi that was suffering from water erosion. Yeah I know the locals say it was 4x4 use but that was a lie. The rakes were full of debris. You know that volunteer green laners have been up there a number of times repairing and clearing the rakes because your council haven't got the money to do it. Were any of you ecologists up there doing that? The Wayferer. Friends of mine were up there in the snow trying to prevent damage by illegal off roaders. ruclips.net/video/DKP0FpYSKII/видео.html As for permission, you need to understand what your talking about. There is no permission. There is legal right as a road. It's not on a knife edge at all and a few green lane groups are working with the council to protect the lanes from illegal use and to voluntary repair them for you Welsh locals. You people need to open your eyes and consider the facts in more detail. If you close a lane what do you think happens? Well a green laner like me who obeys the law won't drive it anymore. What do you think the illegal off road driver does? The one that was causing the damage originally? He didn't care before. Why will he care when its closed. Is there enough police in Wales to patrol the lanes? Of course not. By failing to distinguish between green laners and off roaders all you are going to do is make yourself a problem you haven't a change of resolving. Heaven forbid your area isn't hit by severe weather like in the lakes, where hundreds of green laners drove to the area to volunteer and help out. Green laners are not what you seem to thing they are and you really should do your homework before you go casting such ill founded and inaccurate comments about.
NIC4X4 CAM I would check it before every trip. It is probably closed for the winter months. It only takes a few days of rain to alter the conditions. Also take more than one vehicle, and preferably have a winch.
??!? It isn't, at any point...... On occasions I'll apply noticeably sped up sections if I want to move through 'dull' parts of a trip but nothing has been altered speed wise in this film.
no clue how to drive off road, when your tires are spinning, turn them left/right rapidly, that way they will find that just that little extra bit of traction
I love a couch expert. Whilst there is certainly a mix of driving ability in the video there is also a mix of vehicles. Some with traction control. Also some obstacles are narrow and require accurate lines. Turning left and right rapidly is about the most foolish thing you can do. In some cases what you say makes sense but watching this old video back, not many!!
@@lowrangers2012Reloaded not a couch expert pal, I have actually done off road training with my work (local authority) and they actually taught us to do that. cheers
@@vikingsmb local authority training, now that makes sense. On a wet grass verge that would help. On a 40% rock face with drops to either side that will turn your vehicle over, not so much. The thing is if it does bite whilst youhave your wheel turned, you are in trouble. Its a fine balance but it is a technique for sure.
@@lowrangers2012Reloaded we actually went to a specialist offroad centre for the course in creigiau, good fun as well and it was a eye opener, even had a play to see how far i could get in 2wd if i couldnt get it into 4x4
Why oh why? Another great video ruined by the god-awful noise people insist on putting on them! This is not a musical taste issue by the way, there is no better sound track than that provided by the trucks themselves. Pleeeaaase stop it!
lol. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but having 4300+ subscribers and almost 2 million views now, I think my little formula is OK. I put a lot of effort into getting the truck sound to rise above the soundtrack because I do agree, its important to have it but how often do you see any pro footage on the TV with no soundtrack?!?!
An intelligent response at least! No way of telling how many of those views happen with the sound muted though! Plus I would also have the same debate with any tv producer :-)
It's amazing how much it's changed!
Mint. I hope this lane is still open very interested in trying it out :)

Nice vid. Wish we could get defenders here in canada for a reasonable price.
Do any of the vehicles in the video have locking diffs?
No mate. We usually just increase our clearance with a lift, alter the bumpers to give better entrance and departure angles and stick on some muds. That's usually enough to get through most UK tracks.
Fantastic video, looks like a lot of laughs. Hope to get into a bit of this kind of thing when we buy a Disco 2 in a couple of months!
