I had a flip clock something like this when I was a kid and I remember always being fascinated by it. I eventually opened one up to see how it worked because I usually did that with just about everything lol.
would I like to see this get fixed? hell yes I would. Flipclocks hold a dear place in my heart, having an older panasonic one not too similar to your smaller one there on my bed side table when I slept up in Windham, NY at my Grandma and Grandpa's summer/winter house up there. it was apparently the old clock radio that was originally my aunt's in her bedroom at my grandma's house here in NJ in Gillette before she moved out and went to CA in the early 90s. my dad, being the way he is, had matching late 80s Panasonics with VFD displays at home and there on his side table instead. in fact, he had 3, and when one finally bit the dust, he swapped it for the other one which used to be in my bedroom when I was a kid. repetition indeed, but that alarm was louder than anything else he was ever able to find, and he needed it, being a heavy sleeper. that panasonic flipclock then traveled with him to a rental when he moved up there to work for a software company, and it stayed there in that house when he moved out, as at that time there was a falling out between my aunt and the rest of the family. I recently talked to her on the phone again back in February , first time talking to her since 2008. on a side note, it seems like the alarm for that isn't doing the usual one-second on-off 60Hz buzz I see on a number of clock radios from that time period; I wonder if that's by design or if it's just so used that whatever handled that has failed and needs replacing.
Talk about bringing back memories, I remember as the years went on it lost many numbers to where eventually my parents gave in & purchased a digital clock radio.
Wow that thing is huge! It's the first time I've seen a flip clock with a decimal too. In fact, even a lot of LED digital clocks back then didn't have colons or decimals. Cool sleep timer too; just an interesting clock all around... and the best part is that it works! That's not easy to find these days. How well does it keep time? If it keeps perfect time, you can set it up somewhere and use it... it's too cool not to hehe. I bet the FM issues could all be resolved by adjusting the tuning capacitor.
Ahhh the Panasonic flip for the comparison. Damn good clock radio. My brother still uses his every day to get himself up for work. They just don't make them like that anymore
had one for those many years ago, very similar but different model. i remember that alarm sound and i had same issue with the alarm time, it didn't always go off exactly when you set it, it could go off a few minutes early or late. of course with that dial you couldn't set it exact anyway, it was more of an estimate
You'll probably find that the internals of the clock are made by Copal. I have a "Copal Saehan" clock radio which is similar but has the smaller digits and has real wood construction.
lovely things! must be from the 70's or earily 80's as woodgrain was still in use until i think 86' 88' when it was a 70's thing, it needs a comback woodgrain on everything
2:09 You mention the "spinney thing to show the clock is running", but it looks to me like a strobe indicator labeled "STEREO". Does it stabilize when you tune in an FM stereo station?
From the looks of it, I'd say this clock radio is more likely to be from the early 80's rather than 70's. Probably around 1981-82. It probably has a bad electrolytic capacitor in the FM tuning circuit.
Can't say I've seen a sleep button quite like that before. I'm curious to know if this has its own timing oscillator for the clock, or if it used the 60hz frequency off the AC mains for timing. I've an older LED clock and was trying to figure out why it wasn't keeping proper time. Had the capacitors gone bad, or did the power company stop regulating the 60hz standard? Or is it something else?
The clock runs on a mechanical AC motor, therefore the timing depends on the 60 Hz AC line frequency. The line frequency still has to be tightly regulated or else it could cause failures in the power grid. The UK has an online meter showing how close their grid is to the 50 Hz frequency they use: www.dynamicdemand.co.uk/grid.htm
I had come across a few articles talking about how, in late 2011, the US was going to experiment on part of their grid by doing away with Time Error Corrections for maintaining the 60hz for a year. And then see if anyone would complain. So far, I've yet to find any after-action reports of the experiment... though what I did find, think too much replies on the proper regulation.
I have a flip clock radio that works good, but i only have one problem. The flip clock does not flip unless i turn the knob. Do you know how to fix that problem?
Nah, a uxwbill description is a page long, with half of it telling people not to make rude comments about his kitchen/computer room/etc. despite that nobody ever does. :P
Literally found the exact same clock at my town’s dump. Radio works a considerable amount better though. Doesn’t flip anymore as far as I can tell. Yours is also missing the radio on-off switch.
+1marcelfilms I've had a flip clock by my bed before, wasn't loud enough to bother me. Although it wasn't quite this large... Also, "falling over" is the first time I've heard it being described as that.
yeah, likely a poor transistor or alignment issues - likely this due to fm station/dial position don't match up. deafness relates to its poor output picking up stations.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Maybe something needs a slight adjustment or some sort of preamp circuit has a failing transistor. A potentiometer or inductor that has gone slightly off spec over the years, etc. Rust/dust in switch contacts could also be to blame, but not as likely. We have the one radio and it switches the power and possibly also speakers between AM/FM/CD/Tape with a 4 position switch. What a weird setup, the switch is messed up so I have to fix it to get the speakers working again. Headphones jack still works.

If you decide to crack this beast open to fix it I definitely want to watch.
Love your videos, its never predictable to figure out what we going to see next. From cameras to alarm clocks, and vintage PC hardware. :)
Like 👍 that alarm ⏰!!! 😝😝😝!!! 3:53. Your friend, Jeff.
Never! It sounds like a ship!

Neat clock! I love flip clocks.
I have a sony flip clock "digital timer" for use with one of their early VCRs. It's amazingly accurate.
Reminds me of an Old Panasonic Clock My Parents had when i was growing up. Thanks For Sharing.
Never seen this kind of clock except in TV shows.
Lol that ending: "what if we stayed on the air too long? hahaha!!!"
Nice big digits, great find! Definitely needs a little TLC.
Ahhh the Panasonic flip for the comparison. Damn good clock radio. My brother still uses his every day to get himself up for work. They just don't make them like that anymore
talk about not made like they used too. This thing is gorgeous. nice find.
Vwestlife, you find some of the coolest radios man! I hope you get that one working.
But MAN would that look great in an 80's themed house
That thing is neat. Cosmetically its in real nice shape.
Nice oldie there, had something like that for years until the flip part went kaput.
I like the smaller flip clock radio better :)
Nice find, all it needs now is a cleaning.

ITS HUGE!! i love it clearly must of been made in texas cus u know everythings bigger in texas

I love flip clocks almost as much as nixie tube clocks.

Nice 👍 clock radio
such a cool clock.
that thing is a beast
2:09 You mention the "spinney thing to show the clock is running", but it looks to me like a strobe indicator labeled "STEREO". Does it stabilize when you tune in an FM stereo station?
Lucky lucky bugger I'd love that!
I love how 99% of all flip clocks makes exactly the same noises for alarm setting and the digits flipping.
From the looks of it, I'd say this clock radio is more likely to be from the early 80's rather than 70's. Probably around 1981-82. It probably has a bad electrolytic capacitor in the FM tuning circuit.
not bad for a trash find...Cool looking clock!
You should hack it so it always plays "I Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher, or "Back in Time" by Huey Lewis and the News when you first turn it on :-)

I literally thought this was uxwbill's video until I finally went to it. The subject matter and description are just like something he would do! :)
Nah, a uxwbill description is a page long, with half of it telling people not to make rude comments about his kitchen/computer room/etc. despite that nobody ever does. :P
People don't even read (longer sized) video descriptions these days.
Literally found the exact same clock at my town’s dump. Radio works a considerable amount better though. Doesn’t flip anymore as far as I can tell. Yours is also missing the radio on-off switch.
yeah cool clock please make a video if you open it !
flipy clocky! I like them :)
Very cool!
I can't get over the fact that they called this large flip clock called the "BIGTIME"
This looks really cool :)
I have a ge one that's broken, the numbers won't flip and I'm not sure how to fix it
Hm, interestingly The time on the clock went from 6:01 to 6:02 in about 52 seconds. If you use the youtube video counter. Anybody else notice that?
That's called "video editing." ;-)
I guess you going to have to get inside to align the radio.
I think marty mc fly had the smaller flip clock in back to the future.
Seems decidedly 1970s based on the tuning dial, especially its illumination.
Dang. That's bulky! How can anyone fit these alarm clocks on their desks? Maybe it can be used as a monitor stand.
By the way I think Marty Mcfly had one of these in his room.
+anajay78 Yes, he had a flip clock, but it probably was NOT this one.
+armanelgtron It definitely was not this one, he had a Panasonic RC-6015
What is "The Fisher" I see in the background?
It is a Fisher model 100 FM radio:
ruclips.net/video/9uLEseKLvHI/видео.html
i would like to have a flip clock but in germany you don't find them. But I don't find any on eBay or Amazon either... :(
Awesome
Did you even notice that it was Selena Gomez announcing 107.1?
I can't seem to find the dimensions for this unit anywhere, I'd love to have one just like it but they seem hard to come by on eBay
I wonder what year that radio would have been from?
As I said in the video, late 1970s or early 1980s.
3:55 Ahooooy ya bilge rats! Come o' board!
Haha TYT at the end of the video :)
How loud is that?
i guess it would be really annoying at night when everything is quit
How loud is what?
vwestlife
When the numbers fall over every minute.
+1marcelfilms I've had a flip clock by my bed before, wasn't loud enough to bother me. Although it wasn't quite this large...
Also, "falling over" is the first time I've heard it being described as that.
Is that Cenk Uygur from TYT on the radio at the end of the video?
Yes.
4:57 is that Adele?
Yes, for about a second.
Why do you like westlife so much?
Because they're cute and I like their music. :-)
the dump
i have somthing like this buts by ge
fm is deaf, needs a realignment... see simonspears videos.
It's not deaf. It picks up plenty of stations. The volume is just very low.
yeah, likely a poor transistor or alignment issues - likely this due to fm station/dial position don't match up. deafness relates to its poor output picking up stations.
+vwestlife Can be recalibrated with the pods inside

Nice 👍 clock radio
