  • MOONRAKER LMA-L 33ft Portable Telescopic Antenna Mast.
    This was purchased purely for testing antennas as well as portable work.
    The build is a lot better than i was expecting with half decent gauge alloy,over the next few months i will be popping various antennas up from my collection,be it 80’s 11m antennas as well HF wires,verticals etc
    Here is the links to the antenna and beer😋
    I get a very small cut from each sale so any would be much appreciated. Thanks

      You still cannot beat a proper scaffy pole but these are so much fun.I had something similar back in the 80s that i bought off a lass in the O’s,Andrea seems to ring a bell?
      It was 3 piece and around 20ft with jubilee clips.The good old days!

    I got the LMA-L as a perm mast on the balcony outfront, judt dont over tighten the lug nuts as there set in plastic.
    Get a few hose claps for the joints and save those screws completely, guy ring you only need 1 up the top. 73's Ed up North.

    Got mine a few weeks ago. I drilled a 9.5mm hole on each of the inserts so the thumb screw runs through each section rather than pressing up against them. Stops the mast turning & dropping if the thumb screw fails.

      @gtretroworld  7 месяцев назад +1

      That’s a good idea as the original design in use isn’t the best. I have a couple of these masts now and one of them i have converted to using T-Bolt clamps for a similar reason.

      If you did i would suggest the 26ft version so you could easily reach the top of the first section.I would also override the grub bolts if you didn’t plan on retracting it.Maybe drill just below the joints and use a bolt and wing nut for a quicker release then you will have two secure areas per section.How far is the balcony from the clear top of the building?

      @@gtretroworld Yeah ive asked , I use to have an imax on my neighbours balcony on the top floor, but the 3 storms we had last year killed it off, so my neighbour didn't want one there any more, thing is I'm now using a 1/2 wave dipole at my height and it seem just as good as the imax did, go figure it can be odd here , but I experiment quite a lot.

    Great video, thanks.
    I'm looking at a Diamond CP-6S vertical, it's already 4.5m tall (and 4.9kg!) but I'd need a mast to add a bit more height to clear our little garden's trees (absolutely no space for ground radials!).
    Do you think your mast could cope with that kind of antenna weight?
    Cheers!
    Best regards,

      I had a CP6 years ago on a 20ft scaffold pole which was perfect. Personally i would go with something a bit more substantial as there’s quite a bit going on with that antenna.
      I suppose it depends how high you want it and if you were planning on guying it?
      My QRZ page still shows my old CP6, that reminds me it still needs updating. M3VWN

      @@gtretroworld Cheers! Where we live I can't have something fixed, it has to be "temporary", I currently have a Chameleon MPAS on top of a 2.5m wooden pergola, so that's about 8.5m total and I just about get away with it because I fold it down when the weather turns... But having an actual telescopic mast would be an absolute luxury!!! 😂👍🏻

    I have had a few issues with my mast. The Brass inserts failed on 2 of the sections, I've had to put jubilee clips
    In place. I think from the vibration from the wind and The Gainmaster that's on the mast, that's what's caused the brass inserts to fail. Brass into plastics is not going to work when the antenna is moving around.

    • @gtretroworld
      @gtretroworld  Год назад +1

      I bet that dances a bit with a Gainmaster on top.Yeah worse case if they failed a few slots in the sections and decent Jubilee clips will probably be a improvement anyway.

    Brass inserts on plastic mast locks and stainless on the lock threads??? you cant mix two metals!! one causes the other to have Galvanic corrosion. MM??? trouble there? doesn't look as if it would last a good constant wind albeit the gauge of the mast sections or long service life for the price of £130 it will clatter in the wind too...bringing the pain in the arse noisy Neighbour brigade to the door and thats bad for the Ham radio Enthusiast!! I have a GRP section mast at 10 Metres far more resilient in high south westerly winds in scotland £78 from Sotabeams. also it pays to tie the long wire to the mast with cable ties stop it clanging against the mast for the above problem of neighbour Radar ears!

    • @gtretroworld
      @gtretroworld  9 месяцев назад +1

      To be honest it is really quiet the way i have set it up,definitely no clattering at all. As for brass and stainless there is a very small risk of galvanic corrosion between these two metals. My neighbour did mention the noise of my vertical on a scaffolding pole as that is a howler when the wind is up but they’re cool about it. I will take a look at those GRP masts as that seems a bargain as i am looking for something to house a yagi for portable use.

    • @davidcurrie8564
      @davidcurrie8564 9 месяцев назад

      @@gtretroworld It'll need to be a hell of a gauge of GRP to hold a yagi (depending on the size though) not bad with the neighbour though that's good to hear! I paid £78 for my sotabeams 10M the top is out though as its about 2mm and very spindly I'm using it for my longwire end fed.
