Fine step-by-step video, but holy cow! Summary: To replace your heating element, disassemble the entire dryer! If this is the master plan by manufacturers to motivate a person to just buy a new machine, it's working on me!
I have this exact dryer and it looks a lot harder than it actually is. He is taking you through each step and almost over explaining to make sure you don’t miss anything. I replaced the bearing unit on the front of the drum a couple of years ago and I take it apart fairly regularly to vacuum out all the lint. Really not too bad. 👍🏻
Thanks for this video. Instead of paying for expensive repair or even more expensive replacement, this video helped me disassemble and replace my belt and idler pulley. For those commenting that this doesn't look easy, it is! Just try it! Thanks again for posting this video.
Well my heating element went out I have ordered a replacement part and will give this a go. I plan on taking pics along the way to keep track of what wires went where. So wish me luck. Will come back and update once I recieve heating element and complete repairs!
Thanks for the parts and the video. I thought the darned thing came off the back! So much easier when you see how it comes apart.
I ordered the restring kit from you as the complete assembly is over a month on back order, Wasn't that difficult and less money. Hardest part is getting the belt off the tension pulley. I rigged a hook from a hanger to pull it over with my right hand so my left could put the belt in place.
Thanks for the video. I took mine apart because it was cutting off during the cycle and the top was getting hot. After I took the top off and the front cover I found it was clogged with lint in tube from the lint filter to the motor. I cleaned it out and so far it seems to be working okay.
I agree with the teacher. It is "easy" if you have some basic mechanical aptitude and are able to enjoy a learning experience project - not everyone should try this since many people have little mechanical aptitude and/or genuine patience, but if you have some mechanical aptitude and enjoy projects then I think this project is "easy". If you to take on the project then our experience is not likely to go a smooth as this experienced teacher's video, but it is fairly easy.
I was troubleshooting why it was taking forever for cloths to dry. Before taking the unit apart, I removed the exhaust pipe from the back of the dryer to test if hot air was flowing through the unit - it wasn't - so the first thing I expected was that the heating element was bad - now I had to prove it before ordering an expensive part and finding out that it wasn't the problem. I unplugged the unit from the 220 vac outlet and then followed the video above (which is fantastic) to remove the top and front sheet metal covers, as well as removing the the drum. I then thoroughly vacuumed and wipe down the inside of the dryer - it's now looks like new inside. I then did a continuity test on all three sensors (other videos on RUclips show how to do this simple test) while the unit was at room temperature - take your ohm meter at it's lowest ohms setting and your should have zero ohms across the outer terminals, mine were all good - zero ohms. I then wanted to test the heating elements, so I connected the two door wires together (white and black/white) so that I could run the dryer without the front door panel on the dryer. I tested it at various settings and guest what - the heating elements both worked on most of the settings, I had issues with a few - so, I might have a controller problem - the sensors and heating elements tested OK. I put the dryer back together and will proceed with the master switch - the dryer can be used now that we know which settings have issues. Good luck, thanks again for the above video, simply four screws and you have my GE Dryer fully exposed - don't you love sheet metal - be sure to have plenty of band-aids on hand for the cuts you'll get from some of the sharp edges. GOOD LUCK!!!
Thanks I used this to replace the coils with a GE coil kit from Amazon. $20 or so. I did manage to accidentally pull a motor lead when putting the belt on. Would not start. Had to disassemble to see that lead laying there and re-connected it. All is working good.
This video was so helpful. Thank you very much! I ended up being able to buy just the heater coil and re-stringing it myself, but this video was the ONLY reason I was able to make this repair myself. Thank you very much!
Fantastic instructional video: best I have seen on any subject.
Is there a way to remove lint from behind the heat deflector? Would I have to dissemble everything to remove it. I bought a house with the appliances and noticed there is what looks like lint back there. I already removed the top and the front wall to vacuum out the lint but that doesn’t seem to solve the issue. Thank you.
very informative and extremely helpful thankyou very much!
Great video! I have the same model. Have been researching the problem with my dryer, it quit running, mid-cycle and the top of cabinet was really hot, to the touch so I left it off. A couple of hours later I checked it and it was "Still" hot to the touch, so I unplugged and it eventually cooled down.
Research has led me to believe the heating element has grounded itself and needs to be replaced. Is this the correct assesment ?
Thank you so much for this video i was able to change the heater element with not much trouble.... i got it back together and it ran like a charm..... for about 10 minutes..... im assuming it is now overheating..... when i was changing the heating element I didnt have the small nubby screwdriver so i had to unplug the wires then plug them back in. I thought i got them back into the right spot but now i am questioning if i got it right. I also dont want to go switching wires and burn my house down. I was wondering if you think this could cause the issue and if so you could maybe show me a diagram or be able to tell which wires are causing the problem. Or is this a completely different issue. Thank you so much for this video and your help
Dylan Casterlin If you could get me the model number on your dryer I can help you out!
Steve great tutorial video. I have replaced both thermostates and the heater coil but still no heat, any suggestions?
Gary James Milne What model number do you have?
Kenmore RUXR453EB3WW
My dryer on my washer/dryer GE combo will only run for 1-2 min. I dont have the dryer hose hooked up yet.
Some models will automatically shut off if there is no back pressure from the exhaust. What is your model number?
Should it smell like it's burning the first time after replacing the element
The metal housing for new element may still have an oil residue on it from the manufacturing process. Also, check to make sure that the wire connections to the element and thermostats are tight and do not show signs of overheating.
Hello... I replaced my heater elements after watching your video. One was burnt in to. It was pretty easy thanks to you :)
Now it will not run unless I hold the switch on manually. Drive motor is getting hot. I'm fairly positive the wiring was replaced like it was taken off.
Help
Scott
seeddamrod I passed your question on to Steve and will let you know what he suggests.
The symptom indicates that the motor run winding is not being energized and the motor is running only on the start windings. This is why the motor would be hot and continued use would burn out the motor. Recheck the wiring at the motor switch.
Thank you. I haven't been able to work on it since i posted.
What will happen if the door wires are switched?
I have a GE dryer that has four heat settings....reg, med, low and no heat.........it seems to work ok in all the settings except for regular heat.....it cuts off during the cycle and it seems to be over heating.....what do you think the problem might be?
What about the felted strip that went around the barrel? How do I replace that?
Hi Jean, what is your model number?
Thank you! Easy instructions!
Mr. John my dryer is just like the one on your video well they look the same now my dryer heats up some but not enough I'm thinking a element is bad now what is the cost of the elements you replaced and could it be one the thermostats and should I just go ahead and replace the thermostats while I have it all apart and what is the cost for them as well?
Another thing my wife at times doesn't remove the lint so when I removed the screen to catch the tint I fished out a lot of lint and I also removed lint from the exhaust port leading to the outside wall of my house please guide me with your professional knowledge if in the Houston area let me know I will welcome you to do the job oh I forgot air sure does flow real good out of the outside exhaust duct? 💯👍🏻😊
And last thanks so much for your nice video you rock.
What is your model number?
Did I miss the part where the heating element was restrung or was it just omitted purposely?
Hi John, thanks for watching! No, you didn't miss anything. The new element housing has
the element already strung through the insulators. Unfortunately, we didn't
show lifting the new assembly into place during the repair, but we do show the
new heater assembly at the start of the video. Hope your repair went well!
So I changed the heating element, put the dryer back together, but now it won't run at all. Is there a reset button somewhere?
There is no reset button. Check the door switch harness connection and the idler bracket operated belt switch if your model has one.
I forgot where the wires go in the door of my GE dryer. I have one white wire and one red wire
Putting that belt around the pulley and motor is not easy..I just done one tonight...I did like how they had a break in the video while doing this...at 9:52
my dryer stopped heating after a power outage. the dryer was running when the power went out. it made a loud noise after it stopped. now it won't heat. it will spin but it won't heat. it also makes a noise when it spins. what could be wrong with it?
What is your model number?

I couldn't figure out why you were taking the whole thing out. I am just replacing the element and not the housing. Hey, $11 bucks for the element which the connections are near the top and looks like they just snap into the ceramic standoffs. In my case, the element gave out and I can see where it overheated and is now in two pieces.
Some elements don't have the break down of all parts. You can end up taking more time sourcing heating elements.
@@dougfield4472 , this was an older dryer which helped in being serviceable. Prices varied wildly from 11 bucks for a new element to almost a hundred.
I ended up buying the element and the back bearing and a few clips for a total of around 50 bucks. But, that's before things got so very high.
does all GE dryers use the same heating element ?
Hi Kenny, no not all GE dryers use the same heating element. If you provide your model number I can find the one that is recommended for your GE dryer.
High it's Steve from part select today were going to show you how to replace the heater on your dryer and it's a really easy job liar liar plants for hire.
GE DDE0580
Thanks for the video. But Wow! This video is about replacing the heating element. You show everything...…...except...…..you edit out the actual REPLACING THE HEATING ELEMNET PART! What the hell! Why was that the only thing you edit out. Go figure.
He took it out - you'll have to replace the entire heating element assembly. He just put his back in.
Should just buy another dryer.
Fuck it, 🧐I’m buying a new dryer.
Is there anything that wasn't shown in this video that we can help you with?
