Bobby & CoCo I just love you both. So enjoyable to hear you guys. Seems like just two friends with the most fantastic stories about all the songs and albums. Bobby I turned 73 on August 3rd and I'm setting up my music room to get real busy on my guitars and bass. My Dad passed away at 98 and my wife of 48 years has Alzheimers and can't even live with me anymore so I hope some music will help me out. Dad left me a 87 year old Dobro which I have had set up and cleaned up. My Dad traded a calf and $25 for it and he used to play barn dances.

It wasn't all that long ago that he'd bring the family to the old country to stay with relatives for the summer--- and he'd leave the windows open at our house (Massachusetts) so air would circulate. And now we have to lock the front door if we're going out to the back yard!

That's a good tip. Open D, capo on the second fret gives you an open E. When you tune to open E the strings get very taught because you've tuned everything up from standard pitch...so the D thing is a good way of keeping thing's loose and.....Jeez, I'm off the first chance I get. Thankyou both!

You guys crack me up...banana nut bread...Love the photos of the house-all are great but the kitchen is always to soul of the house. Very tasty remodel. Regarding Thorn Tree: the LP was about 6 months old when I scraped together the funds from my Dallas Morning News paper route and I brought it into my life. I instantly fell in love with the entire album (I've probably bought it 4X over the years) but Thorn Tree just stunned me as a 15 year old and still does. Over the years, girls/women are coursing thru my life and in my home there's always a high end stereo and a way toooo large LP/CD collection. At some point I'm introducing the Layla LP to them. Nine out of 10. times, Thorn Tree generates intense emotion/slash tears. I played it for my date on the way home from your art exhibition last year In Crockett county Texas and she was all teary-reading too much into it. The revelation it revolved around a sorely missed, cruelly taken dog softened. the moment. I've missed your clips.
Love from Austin-it's too damn hot here. I want to live in the Shenandoah Valley when I retire. Be careful. Keep in touch and write when you find work as my Irish ancestors used to say....

To follow up with the comments about Thorn Tree in the recent EC Martin guitar video, Michael Doyle from Guitar Center made a remark to Eric about playing a D-45 Martin on Thorn Tree. Then it gets a little confusing because Eric says "...that was Bobby playing that I think...". On Thorn Tree there are three guitars being played. The one in the mix in the right channel plays a series of harmonic notes throughout along with some slide guitar, so I presume this is Duane's part. It almost sounds like this may have been played on a National Steel or steel bodied Dobro from the tonality of the sound. The other two guitars seem to come in the mix in the left channel and I presume these are Eric and Bobby's parts. On the inside cover of the album, there is a picture of Eric playing a big orange Gretsch Rancher style acoustic, and a picture of Bobby playing an acoustic, maybe the same Gretsch, but really can't tell what type it is. Since the song was recorded live, three different guitars were used. What guitar did you use for your part, and do you recall who played what other guitars (i.e. Gretsch, Martin, Dobro) on Thorn Tree?

I remember buying the release "History of Eric Clapton" in Jr. High School in 1971 or '72; the jam, "Tell The Truth" and reading about what an epiphany you had in Eric's front yard about what ever issue(s) you were dealing with at the time. I remember the Jam of that tune released on this Album, then years later more from those sessions on the 20th Anniversary Layla release; (to which I am listening to now as I write this) how cool the Hammond sounds, Carl and Jim providing the steady yet varying rhythm. Eric's tone (I have read he played through a '50s Tweed Champ; I don't know if there were other effects) seems like that's the first true over driven Strat tone out there, another milestone I believe. Anyway and whatever! the tension in the music, the gradual build up to a pinnacle, then crashing down and back up again is so much like everyone's favorite sport (wink) as are more than a few "In Concert" and "Live at the Filmore" releases attest to. I really like "Tender Love" one of other unfinished songs when everything went to hell in the band. I was wondering; do you and CoCo (your beautiful wife (shameless plug)) perform that song when you're doing gigs? if so could you post a performance here on youtube? I love to listen to the stories you share here and the music, it's plain to see Eric's passion wasn't the only passion to be heard in these recordings! No one skated through these songs, everyone was operating at the max! Whenever I meet a new friend that plays I share the Dominos CDs with them, some come away with a new benchmark in what great music and great playing is! Thanks again for sharing so much and making my experience listening to the Domninos a deeper one.

It's so wonderful to still have a national treasure around to tell what happened during the greatest period in recording history.
Next time please turn up Coco's mic, but great stuff you two, and enjoy the weekend!

Love hearing the two of you discuss just about anything. Even though EC has fallen out of favor with me, that album is still in my top 5. It’s gut wrenching, soulful, and tells a story both lyrically and musically. I first saw Derek Trucks play when he was around 14-15 years old. I haven’t met him, but friends who have say he’s the nicest most respectful person. I know he’s a helluva player with a wide vocabulary of musical influences. As far as I’m concerned, Tedeschi-Trucks Band is the current incarnation of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends/Mad Dogs & Englishmen rolled into one (with a serious nod to Derek & the Dominos). Bobby, I know you’re forever grateful to EC for your association back in the days leading up to Layla and other assorted love songs. But, I gotta say that I was very disappointed that EC didn’t ask you (I assume) to join the tour when Derek played with home. I saw those shows twice, and the bulk of the sets were comprised of Derek & the Dominos tunes. No disrespect to Chris Stainton or whoever played organ during that tour, but it would’ve been a dream come to true to see and hear you recreate what you created in the first place. But, I am glad I heard you and CoCo play almost the entire album at the Bottom Line some years before that EC tour. Keep painting, keep making music, keep loving each other and stay well. But, I do hope to hear and see the two of you play live again sometime in the not too distant future.
    All the best

hi, the house is really starting to now look like a beautiful home. just gorgeous work there CoCo. I thank you for any and all the details in terms of how each person tuned on certain songs. I really do appreciate that. I always felt lost on the different tunings type of thing, I think, I too, maybe a little like Eric just play slide in regular tuning for the most part. However on Tulsa Time, I tune to open G for that one. In fact I always thought Eric did that, on that song and on his song called Motherless Children I thought is tuned to Open G. Maybe I am wrong but that is how I play it and it feels or sounds correct and compared to watching some videos of him i think that is what he is doing but again WHO KNOWS without asking or hearing from the masters themselves. I never new for sure thus always that confusion existed for me and of coarse I hate confusion. Anyway thank you two so much for sharing and clarifying all those details. Oh = P.S. I also love "It's too late" great tune and if it weren't for that song I never would of as a kid seen you Dominos live on T.V. So, = THANK YOU, BOBBY, keep us posted v going forward. thank you kindly, = Stay, Safe and Healthy, Mike, in Phoenix, Az.

CoCo! Hi. I've recorded a version of this great song in an electronic/shoegaze style, female vocalist. My dog died young and we miss her so wanted to do this song. How can I go about getting official permission to share it with others and release it as part of a 4 track EP?

Kinda sad to know that Bobby and Eric were the only guys left from the original four. Lost a lot of good people this year... Randy Meisner, Robby Robertson, Jack Sonni (Dire Straits), Jeff Beck... One generation went over to the other side. But it's pleasing to know that those who remained are still active, making awesome music and keeping the flame lit. Here's a silly thought: How about a fun band with Eric, Bobby, Jim Keltner and a guest bassist to get together and do a jam session calling themselves The Legends?

Thank you for this explanation. I had always thought that there was only 1 track with 2 or three guitars. I follow Tedeschi Trucks and think they did a good job covering Layla and other love songs. There are several riffs that aren't the same in their version. I guess every show that there would be a few changes. My problem with covers is that I am always comparing the original to the cover and the cover most times comes up short. Bobby, did you paint the guitar?
