  • Broadening your horizons.
After a long season of guiding, myself (Mike Kirkpatrick) and Hans Kreuer, felt the usual urge to get out on a road trip and catch a few ourselves. This time though, the pull to explore something completely new was irresistible, and a plan was made to head to the deep South of New Zealand's South Island. What a trip it was too, with a relaxed and and carefree attitude, combining with some breathtaking angling to be a trip for the ages. Fish were caught on small dries, emergers, heavy nymphs and even a crazy selection of big colorful nymphs of all sizes and shapes. Enjoy and please feel free to comment - i'll do my best to reply. Please also keep it as positive as possible as these clips take some time to make for you all to enjoy. Tight lines, Mike.

While I appreciate that nymphing is probably the more technical skill to me the cream of the sport of fly fishing is your quarry taking a dry fly, Han's casting to that trout under the willow tree was exceptional viewing. Beautiful video Mike.

That Brown at 54: was beautiful! I want to fish New Zealand where the fish haven't been killed off by introducing (non - native) fish that gave the fish in Colorado a disease which is killing all the native ones. It is truly sad. I use to travel the brooks and rivers with results very similar to yours here. In US that is how well they govern the wildlife. So now it's more fun watching you on the great adventures in your videos. Thanks for sharing!

Top video Mike in my favourite bit of Un Zid. Pleased to say last time I fished it (April 2017), I got 90% of the fish on nymphs & emergers I'd tied myself by badly imitating some patterns of a local guide I found on the intawib. They wouldn't have a bar of the local shop bought emergers! Also focused on the most heavily fished easy access spots not far from my B&B to hone the skills on smart trout. Sometimes, I'd cast at feeding fish for 2-3hrs before fooling one, but I didn't mind. It was just so peaceful. BTW, I also just use a 4WT/8footer.

Awsome video! I want to be there and fish some day! But I find it insane that so good fishers as you are pick such a big fish up just by its tail. There is a high chance that the fish will damage its spine and that is something the fish will never heal from. So PLEASE everyone stop lifting the fish up by just his/her tail. Its is no use with C&R if you treat the fish like that. There is plenty of damage on the mucusfilm when you let the fish on to the rocks before you net it as well. If we fishers are afraid to get wet, use vader😊 This is important if we want to enoy fishing these fishes again, so this is just for information not criticism. Just good to know, and can treat these beautiful fishes better next time 😊

    Hi Mike,
I enjoy watching your videos in the off season. It gets me chomping at the bit to get out there come October. I always seem to struggle to find much in the way of information on where to go. Everybody is so cagey with places to go so end up trying the usual bigger rivers down south. I think I caught maybe 5 fish on the fly last season which is a bit disappointing to say the least. I sort of know the mataura river. Any hint for the other ones in this vid. Cheers

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  7 лет назад

People are cagey for good reason. You have to get out and find them yourself to really find true satisfaction imo. I will say this; almost any river that has trout in it can produce great results on the day. Look to improve your total skill set, as it is precisely this that will dramatically improve your success, not telling you the location of a specific river. I could tell you to go to river 'X' but without the necessary skills, you may struggle and wonder why i sent you there. Learn to cast well, spot fish, understand entomology, and learn the best approach. Hope this helps.

Such a good video, thanks so much for putting it up, really enjoyed tying flies while watching it, then watching it again haha. I think I recognized parts of the water you fished. Some water under the trees near the beginning of the video from HerleysFlyFishing videos, and the water at 33:47 from Matt Butlers (TravelTruly) videos. Definitely my favorite fly fishing channel on youtube, so much content, such good quality and such amazing surroundings. Hope for more videos in future, Cheers.

thomas dummernik cheers for the comments, I have a drone that I will get out in the future for the aerial perspective - this was only a fishing trip with the camera carried as a way to document the fun and not a serious filming trip.

Well m8 i was 100 % with you one that trip. I was so in so I talked to my wife to make a trip to new Zealand haha.. I'm new to fly fishing and love to see the cast you do. Same time I love to see the fish and landskabe. But seeing the all makes me learn alot. I see that fish are here, and you cast behind them and they take it. But same time I see how you cast, and sometimes I see the same cast over and over again to get to know how your cast is made. All I'm trying to say m8, is you are the best fly Fisher I ever sawn and I will keep watching you and say to the m8's watch this guy. You are sick bro. Gl and hf for everything m8.

Mike at the end of the video you refer to water quality. I work with my local chapter of Trout Unlimited. We work very hard on these kinds of issues which are a constant battle in our Nation. Here in Colorado we provide Water to 1/4 of the US and water rights are a big deal. Trout Unlimited consistently is fighting both on the river and in D.C. to prove that sportsmen truly make the best conservationists. I'm sure you must have like minded people down there?

Hi Colin, Thank you so much for reaching out about this. As an executive committee member of the NZPFGA (NZ's fly fishing guides assn.) i have a great interest in this. One of my portfolios is water quality and environment, so i would be very keen to discuss this further if you have the time to PM me on my FB or email me at mike@latitudeguiding.com. I'm working currently with several assn's and institutes but would love you feedback.
      Kindest regards,
      Mike.

I am from Colo. and it is terrible how Fish and Game destroyed excellent fishing when they introduced all the non native fish even in the Mt. lakes and streams which gave the Native fish the whirling disease. I use to catch fish like these; no more. I totally agree - the sportsman needs to control it all.
The Big Game hunt has been disastrous under their control. The rancher doesn't go out and kill their biggest and strongest breeding bull. And unless you can draw in one of two Special Areas you will never come across the huge mass antlered Elk anymore. They are spindly antlered where they used to be heavy. They have also sold way too many out of state licences out of greed, which has diminished the herds terribly. Just sad.

Hannahcode1 I also work very closely with CPW and I think you may have some misinformation as to how they opperate. CPW is nation leading in many areas and has been very effective in bringing posistive change. I know a lot of players in the industry and I find it useful to attend both TU meetings and CPW reguarly holds public meetings which I suggest you attend to give your input and understand their work better.

Hannahcode you are right on!! Fish and Game sucks!! Trophy whatever is bad for good stock!! Up in Alaska the numbers are declining for all kinds of animals!! Moose, Rainbows and even the King Salmon..... its pathetic!!

Mike, thanks another awesome video. I have learnt so much from watching these fantastic fishing adventures. Fulfilling a life long dream to fish the South Island this coming Nov/Dec. That's a neat lanyard/fly box set up you have is it your own creation? All the best for the season ahead and looking forward to checking out some new content, cheers.

Is there no fish eating eagles/hawks there? I very rarley see fish in shallow rivers, i think it's because there are so many ospreys and bald eagles where i live.

    Excellent video as always!
By the way, what tips do you have when setting the hook when the flies/rig are a bit more downstream than you'd like?
Also, tips on fighting larger fish would help too! I notice that you move the rod a lot when you've got a fish on and am wondering what pressure you're giving to the fish based on what you're feeling/seeing it do.
Thanks, and tight lines from CA!
    ~Kenneth

Cheers mate. Setting a hook well downstream of yourself is case by case, but generally i lift in 'feeling' for weight, too hard on the strike normally pulls the fly loose before it gets well set. On fighting large fish - sidestrain and use of angles is the best way to defeat them quickly. I always change angles when playing fish as i am reacting to the direction of the fish's head and apply side strain low and away. Hope that helps. Mike.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind! It's quite a bit harder since that rig is often 7+feet below the indicator. I had tons of fish come off this last trip.
Also, what wt. rods are both of you using? Do you swear by fast action rods now? Do you feel like you get better hooksets & it's easier to fight fish on them?
      ~Kenneth

I use exclusively Scott Fly Rods. Here i'm using Scott Radians in 4wt, 5wt and 6wt at various times. Best rods in the world imho... Hooking and fighting fish is about technique and not rod choice.
