- Broadening your horizons.
After a long season of guiding, myself (Mike Kirkpatrick) and Hans Kreuer, felt the usual urge to get out on a road trip and catch a few ourselves. This time though, the pull to explore something completely new was irresistible, and a plan was made to head to the deep South of New Zealand's South Island. What a trip it was too, with a relaxed and and carefree attitude, combining with some breathtaking angling to be a trip for the ages. Fish were caught on small dries, emergers, heavy nymphs and even a crazy selection of big colorful nymphs of all sizes and shapes. Enjoy and please feel free to comment - i'll do my best to reply. Please also keep it as positive as possible as these clips take some time to make for you all to enjoy. Tight lines, Mike.

Love these rivers! Stoked to live so close 👌 great video mate
Cheers mate
I never get tired of watching your videos. This one is great. I recognise the exact spots at the start of the video. I recently stayed at Athol and fished right there.... but not as many fish as you guys.
Cheers buddy she’s a great spot down there for sure! Thanks also for your kind thoughts
Unreal viewing ,thanks for sharing ,counting down to the next one 🤜
Superb fly fishing package that will enthral viewers for decades - congratulations 😊
Thanks! Kind words indeed
Beautiful country, beautiful water and beautiful fish. What more can you ask for? I hope that you too find your arms too short!!! Mind you at your age this should take forever so go fill that time with fish. Thanx for sharing your trip
Superb film thanks for that. We are heading back to South Island in February for yet another trip. That's whetted my appetite especially as the season is now over here in Scotland and bleakest winter approaches!
Apart from the fantastic footage I like your comments. In a calm, sonor voice. Thumbs up!
Thanks so much for taking time to say so and I’m glad you liked it!
While I appreciate that nymphing is probably the more technical skill to me the cream of the sport of fly fishing is your quarry taking a dry fly, Han's casting to that trout under the willow tree was exceptional viewing. Beautiful video Mike.
Simon Smith yeah always nice having them take off the top - HANS has some skills for sure
Whoop whoop 🙌 absolutely fun to watch ❤
Ah,my backyard,i feel so lucky to have these rivers less than a hours drive from me.The preservation of these fisheries is a must,as you said, let the next generation enjoy them as much as we have. Also some real nice fish caught...23....in a days fishing! Well done!
Thanks and indeed!
Hey Mike, Another superb effort by you. I've had a ball this summer showing all my Montana fishing buddies your fantastic films and watching their jealous reactions when I tell them that I get to spend two weeks hanging out with you in February. Cheers!!!
Steve
Cheers Steve, appreciate the effort. Looking forward to our trip buddy!
Hans has become a beast on the rod.

long but the video was so enjoyable I could of sat down for another hour still watching. I discovered I actually hadn't seen this one when I was so sure I seen them all, there we have it. This one is right up there in the top bracket with many of your finest vids, brilliant intro and loved the conclusion and your edits how it all closed out too, awesome can't wait for more.
Again, a great video that reinforces the need to fight for clean rivers and environmental protection.. loved it. dm Australia
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and glad you enjoyed it!

Fabulous video your passion shines through even after all the fish you have caught. Hope it inspires youngsters to get involved in best sport in world! Rugby close second😎
Thanks - wise words and i couldn't agree more!
I definitely look forward to the new fishing season videos. Plus I always learn new things from watching your videos, which will hopefully help me put fish on the bank. Thanks again
Philip Johnson you're most welcome
Reckon that's my favourite movie of yours Mike. Watched it three times already and always learn a thing or two (like cast slightly behind the bigger fish in still water with a big dry). Keep em coming and hope you have a full order book for the new season ahead.
Cheers mate - we're all always still learning! :-)
Absolute quality, the scenery, the filming and those fish, stuff dreams are made from, keep up the great work
Cheers for the kind comments and thanks for taking the time to watch

Great fishing and great videos Mike!
Brilliant video and cracking trout well done boys
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Very Much Mike, Great video very inspiring. This was not too far from my local patch, I prefer it a bit further 'out west' but still well within a day trip. Once again, Thanks.
Perfection. A very beautiful presentation in every respect. Thanks.
John shand thanks for your kind words
Well mate, that was simply stunning. Chrome cast onto a big screen, those sunrises, scenery and fish looked amazing. Bloody well done and an inspiration to all us hacks out there. Cheers, Craig
Craig Mounsey thanks Craig. Glad you enjoyed it. I love to potter around over winter with the footage I get over summer - keeps the creative juices flowing while I'm not fishing!
Lovely. A fair few familiar spots in the video.
Cheers!
Wonderful casting and fish handling, can't wait for season to start! Cheers from Argentina
Thankyou - means a lot
Mike, great fishing films. By far my favorites. I have fly fished all my life and I can tell you get it and you've got a real talent with the camera. Well done mate.
Very kind words that i appreciate very much!
Qué buen video , linda pesca y hermosos paisajes , me encantó , felicitaciones.
Great video Mike. Congratulations.
Thanks!
Awesome trip Mike very inspiring, can't wait to chase those NZ fish next year.
That Brown at 54: was beautiful! I want to fish New Zealand where the fish haven't been killed off by introducing (non - native) fish that gave the fish in Colorado a disease which is killing all the native ones. It is truly sad. I use to travel the brooks and rivers with results very similar to yours here. In US that is how well they govern the wildlife. So now it's more fun watching you on the great adventures in your videos. Thanks for sharing!
Top video Mike in my favourite bit of Un Zid. Pleased to say last time I fished it (April 2017), I got 90% of the fish on nymphs & emergers I'd tied myself by badly imitating some patterns of a local guide I found on the intawib. They wouldn't have a bar of the local shop bought emergers! Also focused on the most heavily fished easy access spots not far from my B&B to hone the skills on smart trout. Sometimes, I'd cast at feeding fish for 2-3hrs before fooling one, but I didn't mind. It was just so peaceful. BTW, I also just use a 4WT/8footer.
thanks from Denmark
Cheers!
Fantastic Mike! Just what the doctor ordered for my fly fishing withdrawl symptoms. NZ Opening is less than 40 days away...
Cheers Dave - i'll save you some
You should make more videos like this
Such a high quality video👏🏼
Appreciate it!
nice video
Muy buena pesca
Thanks
Once again, a stunning work of art! Awesome fish and great scenery. I am always looking forward to see your next upload. Greetings from the baltic sea trout coast of Germany ;)
Thanks very much for watching and the kind words
Thats a pretty bag at 1:54 😁! Im kidding, this is one of the best videos out there. Good work guys!
Pink is the new black! Glad you liked it :-)
Great video and beautiful fish like always.
This is one of the better videos.
Thankyou!
Awsome video! I want to be there and fish some day! But I find it insane that so good fishers as you are pick such a big fish up just by its tail. There is a high chance that the fish will damage its spine and that is something the fish will never heal from. So PLEASE everyone stop lifting the fish up by just his/her tail. Its is no use with C&R if you treat the fish like that. There is plenty of damage on the mucusfilm when you let the fish on to the rocks before you net it as well. If we fishers are afraid to get wet, use vader😊 This is important if we want to enoy fishing these fishes again, so this is just for information not criticism. Just good to know, and can treat these beautiful fishes better next time 😊
Beautiful... liebe Grüsse aus der Schweiz
Vielen Dank
Absolutely incredible video mate.
Thanks for the kind words!
Love it
Cheers

Cheers bud. Bottom line is they give me something to do over winter and it's a buzz to build something you enjoy...
mikefsher exactly mate, you know it. Nothing like sitting down editing a sweet fishing trip.
mikefsher fantastic stuff foxy boy Ireland
You should have like a million subscribers, your vids are the best and if I ever get the chance to fish New Zealand, it would be a dream
Truly appreciate the kind words, I like the most the guys who gave it a thumbs down right away. Not sure what their agendas are suffice to say they are swimming against the tide of opinion thankfully.
mikefsher not a problem, and I don't understand how you can give such a great fly fishing clip a thumbs down, such a beautiful place!
I'm off to buy a fly rod. ........ truly awesome
Glad to hear! :-)
Time to get the popcorn out!

You're driving on the wrong side of the road, mate! 😉. Great video as usual, thank you for sharing.
Quality video mate, I can only aspire to something as good, and I do appreciate the time that goes in to putting all that together, and making the fill in sequences etc. Doubt I will ever catch fish like those either. NZ Tourist board should be hiring you!
Thanks for taking time to watch and to make such nice comments
Cracking video mate 👍
Cheers!
Hi Mike,
I enjoy watching your videos in the off season. It gets me chomping at the bit to get out there come October. I always seem to struggle to find much in the way of information on where to go. Everybody is so cagey with places to go so end up trying the usual bigger rivers down south. I think I caught maybe 5 fish on the fly last season which is a bit disappointing to say the least. I sort of know the mataura river. Any hint for the other ones in this vid. Cheers
People are cagey for good reason. You have to get out and find them yourself to really find true satisfaction imo. I will say this; almost any river that has trout in it can produce great results on the day. Look to improve your total skill set, as it is precisely this that will dramatically improve your success, not telling you the location of a specific river. I could tell you to go to river 'X' but without the necessary skills, you may struggle and wonder why i sent you there. Learn to cast well, spot fish, understand entomology, and learn the best approach. Hope this helps.
Such a good video, thanks so much for putting it up, really enjoyed tying flies while watching it, then watching it again haha. I think I recognized parts of the water you fished. Some water under the trees near the beginning of the video from HerleysFlyFishing videos, and the water at 33:47 from Matt Butlers (TravelTruly) videos. Definitely my favorite fly fishing channel on youtube, so much content, such good quality and such amazing surroundings. Hope for more videos in future, Cheers.
Thanks for that, i have rough cuts for 3 more clips done - just gotta find the time to do them
Yeah, I know how it is. I have only done videos up to half an hour before and I know how long cutting clips and sticking them together and then muting, putting in sections of music and all that takes, let alone doing it to the standard of your videos. It is very much appreciated.
Really Nice video mate! Wish i could be there🙂 much regards from sweden
Marcus H cheers!
@mikefsher is it possible to add my facebook/messenger and talk more about the fishing over there? 🤙
send a request and we'll go from there
@@krille4992
@@mikefsher i dont find your name on facebook? Mike fisher right?
@@krille4992 Mike Kirkpatrick (latitude Guiding)
I dont get why you have such a low subscriber count and views. your videos are awesome and definitely high quality production
Thanks - spread the news! :-)
I wish you could give a bit of info on leader ,fly choice etc.Your usual great job.
Gary Ford cheers, I don't really want to go down the instruction path too much as these are more visual diaries of our trips than how too's...
Another awesome vid mike! Well done! i appreciate the time taken editing this video.. My 10 minute videos take long enough let alone a 1 hour vid! Cheers for the Entertainment!
STRIKE FLY FISHING many thanks for the kind comments
Woaw m8. F.....g awesome ay. Your vids are amazing and your fishing is just even more beautiful!!! New sub and liked .
One Thing please do more bird perspective filming so we see the full cast and the fish. Like you did at 22.30 around there you show what I mean. It's so f....g amazing! Good job bro.
thomas dummernik cheers for the comments, I have a drone that I will get out in the future for the aerial perspective - this was only a fishing trip with the camera carried as a way to document the fun and not a serious filming trip.
Well m8 i was 100 % with you one that trip. I was so in so I talked to my wife to make a trip to new Zealand haha.. I'm new to fly fishing and love to see the cast you do. Same time I love to see the fish and landskabe. But seeing the all makes me learn alot. I see that fish are here, and you cast behind them and they take it. But same time I see how you cast, and sometimes I see the same cast over and over again to get to know how your cast is made. All I'm trying to say m8, is you are the best fly Fisher I ever sawn and I will keep watching you and say to the m8's watch this guy. You are sick bro. Gl and hf for everything m8.
Mike at the end of the video you refer to water quality. I work with my local chapter of Trout Unlimited. We work very hard on these kinds of issues which are a constant battle in our Nation. Here in Colorado we provide Water to 1/4 of the US and water rights are a big deal. Trout Unlimited consistently is fighting both on the river and in D.C. to prove that sportsmen truly make the best conservationists. I'm sure you must have like minded people down there?
Hi Colin, Thank you so much for reaching out about this. As an executive committee member of the NZPFGA (NZ's fly fishing guides assn.) i have a great interest in this. One of my portfolios is water quality and environment, so i would be very keen to discuss this further if you have the time to PM me on my FB or email me at mike@latitudeguiding.com. I'm working currently with several assn's and institutes but would love you feedback.
Kindest regards,
Mike.
mikefsher I will do that!
I am from Colo. and it is terrible how Fish and Game destroyed excellent fishing when they introduced all the non native fish even in the Mt. lakes and streams which gave the Native fish the whirling disease. I use to catch fish like these; no more. I totally agree - the sportsman needs to control it all.
The Big Game hunt has been disastrous under their control. The rancher doesn't go out and kill their biggest and strongest breeding bull. And unless you can draw in one of two Special Areas you will never come across the huge mass antlered Elk anymore. They are spindly antlered where they used to be heavy. They have also sold way too many out of state licences out of greed, which has diminished the herds terribly. Just sad.
Hannahcode1 I also work very closely with CPW and I think you may have some misinformation as to how they opperate. CPW is nation leading in many areas and has been very effective in bringing posistive change. I know a lot of players in the industry and I find it useful to attend both TU meetings and CPW reguarly holds public meetings which I suggest you attend to give your input and understand their work better.
Hannahcode you are right on!! Fish and Game sucks!! Trophy whatever is bad for good stock!! Up in Alaska the numbers are declining for all kinds of animals!! Moose, Rainbows and even the King Salmon..... its pathetic!!
Is that a chestpack from CF? Or a box If that is the case where Can i find it?
Outstanding movie, great scenery, big sport! Did all the action happen in Southland?
Well done sir!!! As always! Makes you think, why am I sitting here in my apartment far up north on the other side of the globe?
Hehe - that is a tricky question...
Hey!! I’m staying at Queenstown right now for a couple of weeks with my family and was wondering if you could tell me any creeks or rivers to fish for beginner to intermediate level for fly fishing??? Thanks
Mike, thanks another awesome video. I have learnt so much from watching these fantastic fishing adventures. Fulfilling a life long dream to fish the South Island this coming Nov/Dec. That's a neat lanyard/fly box set up you have is it your own creation? All the best for the season ahead and looking forward to checking out some new content, cheers.
Cheers! It's a C&F Design Lanyard that i added my 'bling' too.
Is there no fish eating eagles/hawks there? I very rarley see fish in shallow rivers, i think it's because there are so many ospreys and bald eagles where i live.
No aerial predators at all...
Stunning footage and super watchable over the entire hour. What is the camera you are using?
Thanks - Canon XA30
😃🔄🐟👍👍😎
Excellent video as always!
By the way, what tips do you have when setting the hook when the flies/rig are a bit more downstream than you'd like?
Also, tips on fighting larger fish would help too! I notice that you move the rod a lot when you've got a fish on and am wondering what pressure you're giving to the fish based on what you're feeling/seeing it do.
Thanks, and tight lines from CA!
~Kenneth
Cheers mate. Setting a hook well downstream of yourself is case by case, but generally i lift in 'feeling' for weight, too hard on the strike normally pulls the fly loose before it gets well set. On fighting large fish - sidestrain and use of angles is the best way to defeat them quickly. I always change angles when playing fish as i am reacting to the direction of the fish's head and apply side strain low and away. Hope that helps. Mike.
Thank you, I'll keep that in mind! It's quite a bit harder since that rig is often 7+feet below the indicator. I had tons of fish come off this last trip.
Also, what wt. rods are both of you using? Do you swear by fast action rods now? Do you feel like you get better hooksets & it's easier to fight fish on them?
~Kenneth
I use exclusively Scott Fly Rods. Here i'm using Scott Radians in 4wt, 5wt and 6wt at various times. Best rods in the world imho... Hooking and fighting fish is about technique and not rod choice.
Hello ! I m french and I thinck you producted the best fly-fishing videos .
Congratulation !!
I'd like to go in New-Zeland , where we can fished ? And you thinck it s better To take guide or To organise personal trip ?
