this is some old material from mining boom that was in Australia about 7 years ago. first mine that they show is Wodgina mine which was iron ore mine and is closed since 2017

Over all the mining boom is considered to be over yet more mines are operating and more people are employed then at the hight of the boom.
The difference is that the money they make is still good it's just not as good as it was but the boom still not over really but the government also didn't get the mining tax on which would have made Australia 500billion by now but people think it would have crippled the industry somehow, even though Norway did it with there oil and have made 1.1trillion missed opportunity Australia.

@@tasmanmcmillan1777 No it's not mate, the mining tax never made it thanks to some clever companies talking shit to there imployees.
But there was one a smaller one put forward for iron ore and coal something like 30% when they reach over 75million in profits a year.
The average person pays about 23%.
Edit as a comparison the Norway oil pay 70% to 80%.
That's also why they have saved 1.1trillion.

Good doco. I quite fancy working in the mines. I worked offshore in the Northsea for years and also offshore and onshore in NZ. Living in NZ now, but love Aussie. Spent 4 years there during the 90's. Only thing I'd need is my NZ Passport, then I could work in Aussie. I also love the desert. NZ is the opposite. Greenery everywhere here. but no dangerous Snakes here. I'm a sparky, but to be honest, I'd give it up and drive one of those giant trucks. That would be very cool.

It's not their Documentary. Its like all their content it is someone else's. This Film is almost 20 years old. The first Mine they showed was shut down 5 years ago. The mining industry is decreasing in Australia.

That's typical of most Pilbara iron ore sites. You'll see more bad shots than good ones. It's just a waste of drilling time and equipment and a waste of explosives.

I lived in the upper peninsula of Michigan where iron ore mining is still happening and in northern Minnesota. I hope that in Australia the miner's do not have air conditioner :)

Gawd! 10 mins in and I had to stop. As a former Karratha resident and surveyor this Atlas advert made me want to vommit. I've surveyed Wodgina Tantalum mine back in the early-mid nineties, long before FIFO stuffed up the joint, when the Pilbara was an unforgiving adventure. Oh! and no mobile phones, internet or dongas with ensuites ;)

yes the area was unforgiving , i went to mt newman in december of 1968 no radio or tv, you worked a ten hour day for 6 days and a 8 hour day on sunday the camp was good, plenty of good food ,i worked their as a plumber one of five plumbers it was a good time there,i left mt newman in october 1969 i have regards for the pilbara and of wa.....

on the other end of the scale we have an iron ore mine in an opposite climate on opposite ends of the globe called Baffinland in Nunavut. Canada. A very large scale mine that also must transport the ore overland to a shipping port where it heads overseas. biggest difference is we have to wear more than a tshirt outside.

looks a good mining site ,, at the end of December 1968 i went up to mt Newman working as a plumber ,the construction camp was good the work was ok i left newman in mid october 1969 ..

Some said what's happening in China was amazing. I've always thought it worrying. A corrupt criminal regime such as the CCP is never happy with what they have. They inevitably begin to covet their neighbors resources and land. Before you know it they are on the march. China becoming more wealthy only provides a means to their ends.
Agreed. Allowing China to grow at all was a huge mistake. We, (the US) should have never allowed businesses to go to China in the first place

Not to be too critical of what was a good video. If a little outdated. Just one small note the Capital of Australia is Canberra not Sydney though some would like give the impression that it is.

You guys need to get some rare earth experts on board as part of your team. You may have some rare earth components or minerals there that are worth hundreds of times more than the iron or you’re getting out of the ground.

if I had the money I would build a huge suction pipe that just sucks the material to Port. It goes in chambers, each chamber has a huge suction block off and it just moves it. Think of the petrol saved.
You can't pipe solids. Suction doesn't work like that, you'd rapidly destroy the fans needed (abrasion and motor burnout). The concept of vacuum chambers works with liquids and gases (to a degree) as they will naturally try to spread to have even pressure, solids don't do that, they are content to stay were they. Oh and the energy cost would be several hundred times that of the fuel burnt trucking it.
Frankly for such a small operation trucks are the best solution, followed by rail. Both options are a few hundred times, if not thousand times more efficient than suction.
I worked at Wodgina when BGC had the mining contract. I think I lasted about a week! People don't call BGC a Big Gang of C**ts for nothing!
Norway has been taxing Oil and energy corporations that extract oil and gas from its offshore wells at 65% plus since the 1960s.
The tax proceeds are directed to Norway’s Sovereign fund which can finance projects of national importance.
How big is the Norway Sovereign Fund? Well it’s the largest Sovereign fund in the world at about $ 1 Trillion US dollars.
Norway has 6 million people which is about 1/4 of Australia’s population.
Australia’s mining and energy sectors are almost 90% foreign owned with US corporations owning about 2/3.
These multinational corporations pay very little in Australia, are subsidised by the tax payer to the tune of $29 billion annually and barely employs 3% of the Australian workforce.
Australia’s policy platform in this sector is effectively giving away one-off natural resources and threatening Australia’s long term prosperity. On this point alone,

Selling out to the US is one thing but selling out to China is quite another. China could one day just decide they want Australia but that's have to go through the US Navy first. I think country's and corps are being very short sighted to deal with China. China always wants a win win deal and if you don't take it they threaten you with retaliation. Australia is learning this the hard way now. I for one wish they'd never sold China a gram of iron ore and before it's over the whole world will regret it. China thinks their economy is the most powerful on earth and so they can just run over everyone else. Imagine how they'll be when they feel this way about their military, of which they spend more of that wealth on every year.

@@nealramsey4439 their military is already at that level. Has been for more than 70 years. They beat the US in both proxy wars that were fought, by realising the US has a key weakness, they can't take losses.
The US navy is a paper tiger, they can't actually put any of their carriers at risk, losing a single one would end the political careers of the top US politicians at the time. Without the carriers, they aren't a threat. And China has the forces needed to sink them, in exchange for moderate sustainable losses.
Only reason China doesn't use military force is because they realised they can just use economic force and no one can realistically resist them, they have bought up most countries national debt giving them huge economic power. Western nations governments can't operate without borrowing more money than they make every year, its China who they borrow it from in the form of bonds.
Two Fun Facts: Iron Ore isn't a rock. It's actually a metal, like gold, silver, or copper. Two, my dad actually has a pen pal from Australia
Ore (Fe2O3) is very much a rock that needs to be refined and reduced to become iron and steel.

I worked for Peabody Inc for 7 yrs in Wyoming good old USA one of the largest surface coal mines in the world and Colorado underground coal mine, it was a blast 🤣🤣

No, they look quite small,Cat 777, 785, 789 maybe, the excavators look small too. There are some massive machines and trucks, in other parts of Australia though. Hunter Valley.
