Regenerative AM broadcast receiver demonstration

  • A demonstration of a home-made AM broadcast receiver. The set uses two transistors (MPF102 FET & BC548 NPN) and one audio IC (TDA 2822). The test was done in the middle of the day with no external antenna. If done at night many interstate stations would have been heard. The circuit of an earlier version (without the IC audio amp) appears on my website at vk3ye.com

    Well... i have built this AM receptor.
    With the audio amplifier based on a LM386 sounded very good to me.

    The sound quality was excellent, but the singing was horrendous.

    Hi vk3ye! How did you wire the TDA2822? It's a stereo chip... did you left one channel idle?

    Atlantis - I don't know what a BF245 is, but if it's a small signal FET suitable for RF it should be OK.

    Glad you got it to work, but there's no such thing as a "simple" regenerative receiver. They look simple with a handful of parts, but most builders will never get one to work. The bane of regen builders are the homemade coils. Anyone not understanding that hasn't attempted to make them. Approaching oscillation at the right time, with a manageable touch, movement and lack of capacitive hand effect are almost unachievable. The few regen builders who get that far then find that the creation won't cover the desired frequencies.
    Your rig uses a ferrite core which causes windings to vary impossibly in inductance. I can tell you spent a lot of time with the instructions, but needed to mention more than just wire gauge and rod length. Rods have different permeabilities, diameters and shapes - all which means that a single coil turn can ruin a project, not to mention lead lengths and component placement. I would never attempt to build a regen using ferrite cores and my hat's off to you for getting your to work, but I doubt if many people were able to duplicate your set.
    People are much better off building simple direct conversion sets. Local oscillators are much more user-friendly and easily adjustable.
