He uses one hand to control the arms (both rods at once) and one hand to control the mouth and general head movements. It's definitely not a double act.
I've seen him in person a few times and at the last show it wasn't quite dark enough to hide him bolt across the stage and duck behind the table at the beginning
Yes It's actually only one guy voicing and controlling the puppet, he holds the sticks controlling both like chopsticks, he's just really good at what he does.

The fact you guys bought into the story too is the best part. I did too when I first saw this, and I was like "what?!" when he revealed that it wasn't real XD
The part that tipped me off that it might not be real was that it was a day in the life of a puppet.
Because we can all imagine there being someone like Morgan in real life that would snap like that because of a divorce and being betrayed by his own ‘Best friend’. Especially if you, your family, or even your friends have been through a divorce or betrayal like Randy’s short story.

Okay, I’m gonna need to watch more Randy after this cause this is goddamn hilarious.
For a bit of context, the reason Randy said "fuck you Hemmingway" at the end was because earlier in the show Randy had a segment about Hemmingway, who Randy quotes to have said "The first draft is always shit."
I love Randy. He's funny and also thought provoking.
I've loved Randy for a couple years now, and it IS indeed fascinating that this one man is so good at puppeteering, but it being just one man also satisfactorily explains WHY it's so good. Without hours and hours and hours of perfecting the timing between live speech and live movement between two people, it would be almost impossible to convincingly do for up to 120 minutes at a time. Therefore the easiest way to make it work well with the lowest prep time, would be to have one guy doing both because he is the only person that can predict his own speech before it happens, making the necessary movements to continue suspending disbelief. There are smaller things like word choice and thought patterns that can change from one show to the next, and often do (there are other videos of the same story on YT where both the words and the delivery are different). This was all typed up at just before the halfway point so maybe both of you already came to these conclusions but it's an interesting sub-genre of comedy shows regardless.

I actually saw Randy perform live here in Vermont back in June. He honestly looked a lot bigger in person
I always thught that I would be unnerved of him in person because I do not like puppets or animatronics. But when I saw him in Nashville a couple of months ago, I lost my voice from laughing and screaming too much. He was hilarious and so nice to meet as well.
Always loved his stuff saw him live and was honestly really impressed, he regularly performs bare foot as we found out 😂

Pretty sure it's just one guy with one hand inside the puppet controlling the mouth and body and the other hand controlling both hands. If you look at the hands you'll notice that when both are moving, their movements are symmetrical, and when he moves one hand independently, he drops the stick of the other hand and then picks it back up.

Puppeteers usually lay down beneath the desk looking at a screen that's a camera feed looking at the stage so they can watch their own movements. Both rods moving the hands are in one hand and the other hand controls the head and mouth.
Randy also showed up on the world-famous nationally syndicated radio show "The Bob and Tom Show".

These kinds of puppets typically require two hands to operate. One hand controls the head, while the other maneuvers the arms.
I got to see him live when he went on tour recently. My fiancee (who isn't really into comedians) was cry laughing with me.
So here is how it works. to operate the head 1 hand is all the way straight up in the air moving only the lower jaw so it moves more human like.
Randys arms are controled with 2 robs which is between the puppeteers fingers in the other.
The way the puppeteer gets around is they are completely on their back and laying on a roller which helps them get around.
As for the voice its the same person but they are using a headset instead of a microphone.
Randy is one of the funniest comedians I have ever seen
It has become tradition for my friend and I to quote this bit almost on a daily basis.

Guys, Randy is just a regular old foam based puppet, his mouth is literally a circle of cardboard (or similar) foldeed in half and glued to some black felt which is sewn into the head. One hand goes in the head, and the other hand is holding the rods connected to Randy's hands. They work like a pair of extra long chopsticks. The mechanics are simple, its the **presentation** of a puppet that makes the magic.
If I was an associate with Morgan's bosses I would take him in a separate room and give him both a hug and big raise.
