Cleaning An LP Cover

- One Sunday I was crate digging and got some records with dirty covers. This is my method of cleaning off the grime and scuff marks sometimes appearing on the "white" areas of old and dirty LP sleeves. Hopefully it will not be too controversial!
I use surgical spirit, applied with a non-fleecing cotton wool pad. But ONLY on laminated covers 👍

I use a wet paper towel that I squeeze all of the water out of and it works great. I don't like chemicals and I avoid them whenever possible.
How is that going to help destroy mold? Mold loves water
@@rstuvwxy7020 you can kill mould but the stain once it's there it's a permanent guest. Keep LPs in sleeves and use moisture absorbers (like Hippos) on your shelves to absorb moisture in the room. But, as with all things (including us) age will eventually show one way or another.
Dirt is one thing but mould quite another. Mould is the worst enemy along with mites when it comes to LP covers and books. Both leave stains that will sink into the paper which you can't remove without also removing the surface of the paper. I now use Hippos (moisture absorbers) on my shelves.
Nice tips for cleaning dirty covers.I gotta try it. One product that I have had good luck with is "Gel Gloss" which you can get at hardware stores. The product is actually for cleaning marble and hard plastics, by a small amount of a paper towel works great.

Thanks for watching, and thanks for the tip. Since I made this old video I have made a new one recently, saying how NOT to clean a cover... I have lost some ink through this method, and recommend it mainly for white areas with no color.
I use the Lysol wipes on my thrift shop finds. I squeeze it good so its just barely moist and quickly follow it with a dry paper towel. But I only use this method on laminated/glossy covers. On covers that are just paper stock I substitute the Lysol wipes with a Mr. Clean magic eraser (moistened up with water and squeezed nearly dry) and follow it with a dry paper towel. It'll take off heavy ring wear if you're talking about darker color transfer on a lighter color album cover. Give it a shot. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the results

Lora Goff - Sorry! It's been years since I made this video, and these days I no longer use the wipes for that very reason! However, the Lysol ones are still good for the white areas of an album cover (not the color parts).
Here's a suggestion, buy a tri-pod.

Hi! For paper slicks, you can use Lysol, or Clorox wipes, but you're going to want to squeeze all of the excess solution from the wipe before you start cleaning.

Rob - keep watching my channel for a brand new video I'll be doing soon on cleaning a dirty cover I just found recently. Since I have made this video I want to warn people not to be harsh with this cleaner, and don't rub hard in one spot -- it can take color off. It is best mainly for WHITE areas.
Oh, and also -- I don't know about any other type of Lysol wipe. All I want to make clear (and wish I would have remembered to say in the video) is that really I only use this routine for extra-dirty garage sale albums -- and also, I don't really recommend scrubbing too hard, though the vid makes it appear I am using a lot of elbow grease! It's also wise to immediately dry off the surface as you're going along.

You can also use a lysol aerosol on a rag as well (though the wipes you have are better)... BadEditPro did a video of these wipes as well; he wrings out the excess cleaning fluid before hitting the album, though.
I use a Pink Eraser with only the lightest pressure
On glossy covers, this method works very well. Lysol wipes are good for this purpose as they contain a low amount of water in their compositions. Has anyone used the Goo Gone to remove stickers or glue marks from covers?
I have used Goo Gone, but I prefer a hot hair dryer.

Using pledge, since its made for wood with a paper towel works very well. Not too much, his method with the pledge work for me.

Is ring wear the result of storing vinyl too tight? If I put my vinyl in milk crates with the record inside the cover, will covers get ring wear over time?
+Nathan Silverberg From what I understand, ring wear comes from sliding the albums on and off the shelf between other albums. So if you're flipping through a milk crate it should be fine, or using plastic sleeves will also prevent it.

Hey!! I removed a sticker by hand but the glue remain in the cover, it's colorful, how do you think that the glue could be removed? thanks

It looked like some of that brown stuff on the cleaning rags was nicotine. You'll find a lot of it on old album covers - nasty.
Joe, will any Lysol wipe work or only the "I.C"? I have a Beatles white album that a friend gave to me that's in pretty bad shape. I was afraid to touch it thinking I might do more harm than good. Very informative video. By the way, Mary looked hot on that album cover.

Thank you for this video MeanMr Mayo! I love this method for vinyl records with a slick/glossy cover. However I'm kind of afraid to do this to others that have kind of a cardboard paper finish. Do you think this would hold up on all covers?

The News Network No -- be very careful. Even with glossy covers, go very lightly and be sure not to concentrate too much on non-white areas with colors.

Did you notice that all those "Sing Along with Mitch" albums have a heavy shiny coating on them? I don't know of any other albums that are like them.

but DON'T use this on covers that aren't glossy!
+Ryan Heath -- RIGHT. In ways I do regret making this video now, though it has received many views over the years. This technique is fine for whites, but even on this Peter, Paul & Mary LP here, I do recall its colored photo getting VERY sticky at the end. That is because some of the colored ink may be coming off... sometimes you can't really notice it though.

Not well! Not recommended!
I've tried many of the solutions, baby wipes, clorox wipes, etc., and none work. I'll just the leave them alone and sell then as is.
