Brighton has a strong busking culture. They probably alerted the police that they would be performing, because they knew they would draw a crowd. But Ren, Sam, and the members of the bands Ren has been part of (Trick the Fox and The Big Push) all did years of busking. Ren, due to his illness, has difficulties in trying to tour. He did a limited tour with The Big Push and he has done some shows in other places. But largely he has done busking to polish his performance skills. I don't know that this was really promoting anything (though they did make some original music together. They were just very well-known buskers in Brighton. A lot of busking videos involving Ren show pretty big crowds. Ren helped a much younger Sam by giving him some busking advice and playing back up guitar the day they met. Sam has gone on to some success himself. He was recently on stage with Justin Bieber. He sort of plays bass guitar (he mostly treats it like a regular guitar though). He has also played melodica and drums on some The Big Push songs. He writes his own music, beats, and lyrics. He produces his music and directs most of the videos.
Ren plays guitar ( acoustic and electric) proficiently. Likewise with piano. He also plays the drums, the melodica and some cello. And he’s also proficient in beatboxing and using his mouth/ voice in unconventional yet powerful ways. Backstory: Ren was busking alone and when he was done for the day he saw this kid - Sam at ~ 16 y.o.- standing on a corner, no guitar, amp etc so Ren offered him his equipment to use. At the time Sam didn’t play so Ren played for him and let Sam keep everything he made. And a friendship was born. They do both covers/ mashups and their own original collaborations: Blind Eyed, What Went Wrong, Sam has a good amount of his own music you can find on RUclips. Justin Bieber chose him to open for one of his tours. Talent all around.
This was just a normal busking session. There's a big crowd because... talent! I feel sorry for the guy hanging around with the guitar case, who's obviously waiting to go on after them. :) Ren became so popular in recent years, that he'd ring the police before setting out and they'd send officers along because they knew there'd be a big crowd of people! :) Btw, this is an official busking spot but there are a lot more unofficial busking spots. Ren would probably play the unofficial ones, more often than not. Luckily the authorities in most British towns are pretty relaxed about informal busking. As long as you're not causing a serious nuisance it's fine. :)
