Do Americans really not know what Chansons are? I never realized that Chanson is particularly European. (Very french, yes, but I thought beloved all over - not just their neighbors)
@@Philemaphobia The term Chanson refers to a French style of music, and its German equivalent would be Liedermacher. Both styles emphasize a particular blend of folksy music and lyrical depth. In the US, this type of music doesn’t have a direct equivalent, perhaps due to the country's diverse cultural influences, which gave rise to a wide variety of musical styles rather than a singular tradition. However, the closest equivalent would be the singer-songwriter genre. The word Chanson is somewhat recognized in English (as well as artists like Edith Piaf). However, for someone learning German, it can be challenging to grasp the nuances and understand the use of loanwords unless they are highly fluent.
@4:13 What do you do? Every single time, Germans are so confused by that question. "What do you do in life?" They never understand it is about your job. "What do you do in this city?" they well respond "I live there". German is so literal, if you don't give them context, they are so lost.
In German you would ask "What is your work" (more or less). "What do you do" doesn't really compute for them without the reference to work. Leaving out that reference sort of implies "What are you doing right now this moment?" It's just a language barrier, and although a simple sentence, the translation into the German language in their head doesn't make it any clearer.
In Germany it is not customary to ask in the second sentence a stranger what he does for a living. It is normal in the US, but not here. You talk about when you know a person a bit better. Also we don't talk about how much we make in our jobs.
@@Blaisem I think it has something to do with the fact that German doesn't have a progessive tense. "I am doing something" and "I do something" are the same in German. In the video you can see some people hypercorrecting this by using the progressive for every sentence.
