A song about the pressures of the Korean education system and societal pressures that the youth still experience today hit deep for many SK adolescents.
When RM says "hands up to the SKY" he's also talking about the top 3 universities in South Korea. S- Soul National University K- Korea University Y- Yonsei University
Korea had a turning point in its economic history, and this was through hard work and discipline. Hard work is a philosophy of life. So much so that in BTS, even with their intense life of rehearsals, shows, travels, etc., everyone went to University and graduated. All of this is important, but the downside is burdening young people with an obsession with merit and performance. There is a parallel with the song ON (not just in writing: on and being the same word read backwards). "NO" vs "ON": - in 'NO' they are very young and fight against society and the concepts that oppress them. - in ‘ON’, they are adults and the fight is within them, against their own dilemmas. BTS is always profound in its lyrics and contexts.
When they say fron Seoul to the SKY it refers to Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University. The equivalent of the Ivy League It's talking about the pressures of the Korean educational system.
many ARMY knows wha you re talking because there is Suga's song Tony Montana - that he performed last time live with Jimin as special guest on Suga's tour D-DAY The Final In Seoul (KSPO Dome) 5th Aug 2023 (Day 2). (Jungkook was the Day 1 special guest they performed Burn It together.)
This is such a powerful song. When I first saw it back in 2017, I was compelled to research the meaning behind the lyrics, and was impressed with how deep they were (From Seoul to SKY, SNU, and the cut throat Korean education system, and what it does to the youth). Lyrics are the heart and soul of BTS culture. So many ppl grab onto BTS because of their popularity, great choreo and pretty looks, but miss out on the meaning of their lyrics.
Great reaction and context. Speaking of inspiration, I would suggest their song Born Singer, where they do a shout-out to all their hip hop inspirations. It'll tell you a lot about where they're coming from. The song is an early adaptation of J Cole's Born Sinner uploaded to Soundcloud and performed live but J Cole approved it for official release for their anthology album Proof. It's very informative. Also, loving the screen setup. 😉👍 💜
5:35 For the west coast influence, this song was the title track from their album O!RUL8,2? that was released Sept. 2013....they filmed American Hustle Life in LA June 2014 but PDogg (their long time producer, RM and Suga are/were definitely students of hiphop).
I wonder how many students, at that time, had to sneak to watch/listen to this song lest their parents find out. In fact, knowing Korean society, I'm surprised the 'elders' didn't try and put an end to BTS' career before they even got started, lol Baepsae is the same....very against societal norms. It's interesting when you talk about the details of the music Mr. Biggs....to me it's like a foreign language...I'm just not able to 'hear' all the things that you hear. I know what I like and don't like, but couldn't tell you why. I've only recently become a big fan of Disturbed. Kind of weird for someone 67....but I like what I'm hearing and like BTS, I am digging the lyrical story lines. Thank you! ARMY grandma
No comment on the lyrics? In their epic 2019 MMA performance, they do a re-mixed portion of N.O as part of the finale song Dionysus, which itself actually follows re-worked portions of seven different tracks, to introduce each member, each accompanied by an epic staging and choreography. You will enjoy that a lot. The work they put into that whole 37-minute long performance will never be matched.
The moment you mentioned Big Joe, I immediately heard the similarities lol. This song dropped a little before they went out to hang with Warren, but the influence is definitely there. The guys (especially RM and Suga) are very much students of music, so it doesn't surprise me that they were riding that wave.

RM has a single produced with Warren G you might want to check out. It's called Please Don't Die/PDD and there is an MV for it. It's on the list of Other Singles in the Discography I posted for you. It's from, I believe, the year after BTS met Warren G while doing the series American Hustle Life in L.A. RM flew back to L.A. by himself to do the track with Warren G.

I understand you are a music producer and your focus is going to be on the music, but if you're not paying attention to the lyrics - you are really loosing half of what makes their music stand out. They met Coolio and Warren G in the summer of 2014 while they were making their DANGER album. This song (N.O. stands for No Offence) is off their second album ORUL82 and was made before they went to the U.S.
Nice reaction! It was interesting to hear the musical context you would put it in. Did you look at the lyrics at all? I love this songs not only for the sound, but especially for the lyrics that I find super strong. South Korean has a extremely harsh school and working system, and I comment them for critiquing societal problems even s soon after their debut!

As you know, the members were extremely young when they first debuted and most of them were still in school and kids. Their first three albums heavily focused on the school education system, childish innocent teenage love, and struggles that the youth have to go through because the boys have experienced that sort of thing themselves. They wanted to relate and protect the youth. Once you go through more of the albums you'll notice the older they get, the more mature the themes will get and so will the messages. Eva Stokes said on 10/20/22 Actually the first verse is the first verse of Suga's part in the first song "No More Dream" RM says 'What's your dream' then Suga says 'I want a big car, big house big rings' which he goes on to repeat in several songs. As the second song "N.O" was not only a comment on the Korean Educational System like others have commented but on something that RM has also spoken about that was he stopped dreaming when he was in middle school and lived a life for his parents dreams. This song speaks to that loss of dreams during youth. Their parents dream of going to university in Seoul (SKY = Seoul's very famous Universities best in the nation). Just an aside as the stairs are reused in an award ceremony performance so are the hands you see, they were used on a performance of "Fake Love" during an award ceremony. They are masters of using things over and over to remind you that this all flows together be it music, lyrics or even props. I think that is why so many are surprised that BTS spent so much time on sets as opposed to CGI. Sets they can use again and for a group that worked with little to no funds that was important early on. And yes ON is related to NO as it is a call to bring it on that they BTS will continue to buck the system and work hard for their dreams. It is a masterpiece of a song and one of the beginnings of the BTS Universe. Just so you know you have now officially gone down the BU path. Welcome and enjoy. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
@@frankiebiggz if ur doing chronologically ON dropped in 2020 so ur still not there yet I don't think. Black Swan also dropped the same year. They were both on the same album MOTS7. Both great songs. Black Swan might resonate with u if u read the lyrics carefully.

Actually the first verse is the first verse of Suga's part in the first song "No More Dream" RM says 'What's your dream' then Suga says 'I want a big car, big house big rings' which he goes on to repeat in several songs.
ON haven't watched yet, I think it's coming soon chronologically? I have no idea, Irene is the one putting the reactions together... lol...
@@frankiebiggz if ur doing chronologically ON dropped in 2020 so ur still not there yet I don't think. Black Swan also dropped the same year. They were both on the same album MOTS7. Both great songs. Black Swan might resonate with u if u read the lyrics carefully.
N.O. no offense. Frankie where you get your shirt? 👀Love to have one can you gift me one please (med/Lar) okay. Thanks💜 🤪
I got it on Amazon! Haha! 😂😂😂
@@frankiebiggz yup! Now I need it too
Interesting listen to what you are saying, but please dont have the captions on the screen, says "music" or whatever you say, badly interpreted. If you posted the closed captions of the songs lyrics that would be nice.
This song was produced by Pdogg who is an inhouse producer for Bighit and produced a lot of BTS numbers.
I don't know how to transfer the CC from the video to my reaction. I will check on this a little bit more. Thanks for your comment
