'The development of inland Australia largely depends on the men who keep open the supply lines and communications - the outback mailmen. In an area larger than Europe, beyond the last roads and railways, their tracks make the map of the inland, become the roads of tomorrow and mark the growth of the nation.'
Across the centre of Australia ran an ancient 300-mile track that was used by Aboriginal people trading between north and south. Commonly known as the Birdsville Track, joining Marree in South Australia to Birdsville in Queensland, it was the main thoroughfare for Tom Kruse to deliver mail and supplies to outlying cattle stations. The Back of Beyond follows his remarkable journey and celebrates the characters that define outback Australia.

An Aussie Trucking Legend, Tom Kruze.
This documentary was shown to us at a little village school in England when I was about 7 years old ( 1968 ) . Needless to say I was captivated , must have quite an effect because I live in Australia now . Have driven between Perth and Sydney 15 times now , but if I had a decent 4x4 I'd love to drive some challenging routes .
Should drive thru adelaide u will need 4wd low there's that many potholes 👍
@@joannemarc9121 Funny you should say that . In 2017 I drove through the outskirts of Adelaide and was appalled by the state of the road . Damn near shook my little old van to pieces . Where is the rego money going ?

Esmond Gerald (Tom) Kruse and William Henry Butler, the two stars of The Back of Beyond. The two trucks were a modified 1936 Leyland Badger and a 1941 Canadian Military Pattern cab 12 3-ton army truck.
Excellent trailer !
I am a postal worker and this makes me proud to be one now as a truck driver in Aus post.. Shame we have sociopathic suits who are the ME, ME, ME generations. Tom Kruze should of been CEO he would of turfed these clowns out and had Aus post running by the people for the people.. The way it should be.
Well Said Tom I Work For Australia Post Too! Those Working In An Air-conditioned Office Wouldn't Last 2 Minutes Out There!🙂🤠🚘🏜️✉️📮🇦🇺
