MeatEater knows a thing or two about wild foods and backcountry adventure. So we met up with their Director of Conservation, Ryan "Cal" Callaghan, to lead us on our own mountain fishing excursion, where we caught and cooked some trout deep in the Montana mountains, right in Cal's backyard. Spoiler alert: it's better than freeze-dried food.
Our Co-founder, Richard, and Director of Brand Marketing, Mike, picked up some pro tips from Cal along the way-like how to perfectly cook trout plus a few unexpected backcountry essentials.

Great collaboration! The meat eater crew is amazing and super excited to see y’all connect with them!
Cal, the kind of guy that takes a boat on a hike
I hope these dudes realize how incredible it is to go out and learn this from Cal. LONG LIVE THE BEAST
Awesome footage guys and fly Fishing 🎣 👍👍🗽🇺🇸 Thank you for sharing 👍
The Vermonter
That’s the windshield of a man who adventures.
Yes, Callaghan!
Thank you, Sir.
No wonder rinella considers you a good friend, that's amazing the work you put in for the trip...if ya ever want to catch steelhead on the Deschutes river in central Oregon,I've got the property
cal acting like an ambassador of outdoor wisdom in this episode
What a great hike… if I was 20 years younger. I’d be doing this every weekend
I like cal's leadership style. It's not dictatorship. He's like we're all a team lets all chime in. Just 3 guys working together. I like it.
Great adventure, great video! Does anyone know what chest rig they are all using?
dude, sorry we missed this! Those chest rigs are made by our buddies over at FHF Gear (www.fhfgear.com/?lang=en_US). Mike and Rich are rocking the Chest Rig, Ol' Cal has got the Bino Harness on, and all three are being smart with the Expandable Bear Spray Holster strapped underneath
@@Huckberryco No worries! Thanks for the reply and info 😊
The makings of a man: know what you like and stick to it.
Ryan: Likes his food so he is willing to pack in the stuff to cook real food the way it should be cooked to honor the sacrifice of that animal passing on so he can eat.
I strive to be that guy but that is for other people to decide. All I can do is do my best to be me, and hopefully that is someone who encourages other people to be better by my example.
Thank you Ryan for setting that example for me. Keep up the good work!
Craziest thing I saw this year was a lady catch a trout in Colorado,, she clearly had it out of the water for way too long because she couldn't get the hook out... Everyone knows trout are too sensitive and and real fisherman knew that trout was dead..... I said to her "Keep it, it's a dead trout anyways".... Her and her hubby shook their heads No and proceeded to release the floating fish.... I said "yep it's dead ya might as well eat it".... They tried to re release it and told me "it was just stunned" and pushed it under the water and let it float away........ What a couple of idiots. . . . .
I don’t really care. CPW will just stock more of those nasty things.
Curious, how far from the campsite did they eat their trout? (that was A LOT of butter!).
I wish people had half the respect for nature Callaghan has.
Clicked on cal, stayed for snort!!
When I was taught to fish it was for food with my grandmother The first time I went with one of my friends and his family and they started throwing fish back blew my mind just like those guys killing one. crazy lol
Ol' Cal hooking up with Huckberry? I'm in!
Were those stone glacier packs?
Everyone should have had a proper introduction.. including the yellow lab :)
Love your work!
What’s the brand of the jackets all they wear?
Can someone tell me what kind of boat that was? It looks perfect for the fishing I'd like to be doing where I live.
It's called a pack raft.
Cal reminds me of my scout leader when I was a kid.
If he asked me whether I would club a trout to eat my reply would be like a Harp seal get the pan and bacon fat ready.
Not traveling light but looked like a good time!
Cal the man 🤙🏽
What is it about aqua-blue colored lakes that makes Callahan thinks there are less fish life?
Sometimes it can be an indicator of high mineral content that doesn't make it easy for life to thrive there
That's the best way to gut a small fish for sure by the way
Callaghan will show you the way! I enjoy this video because you’re small but a big part of the outdoors is the harvest! You have to think back to why anyone would go out there! Efforts are only made for calories!
I gotta get out there man, this city is giving me cabin fever
And now I know why ryan is single.... "Does that sound like Kool and the Gang?"
Was the stove required because there was a open fire ban?
You are correct, sir
SNORRRRRRRT!!!
What kind of boots are you guys wearing in this?
If you scale them first it takes most of that fishy river taste out of it
Wish I had the energy of the dog
Who's job was it to carry the stove?
It folds flat.
Meateater happened to drag huckberry along.....
How did a guy who is scared to kill a trout get on a show named "meateater"?
And at this point he realized trout are not comprised of soy.
His voice is immediate streetcred
“I’ve never killed a trout I’ve caught on a fly rod” aka I play golf with fish.
Goofy bastards.
For John damn sake, fix your windshield
Dude caught a fish and released it. Also never killed and ate a fish he caught. Oh evolution our surviving mechanism we need you to work on this weaker individual. Don't let him procreate. Lol
Ads, ads, ads, ads..can't even watch this series..
OK if you're not EATING the fish.....don't catch the fish. That whacko doesn't need to be doing this.
Can you pluck wild edibles and not eat them? These fish are packed in for people to enjoy for sport or consumption. He bought a fishing license and is supporting his local conservation and wildlife management, he may use it how he pleases.
Nur Großtstadt Kinder würden sich sowas einfallen lassen...
“In many Wilderness Areas, devleoped campgrounds, picnic areas and day use areas, dogs are required to be on a leash.”
-Custer-Gallatin National Forest.
I bet you are fun at parties 🎉
If these yahoos want to make money exploiting the outdoors they can at least follow the rules. Same rules you and I are required to follow. Just like at parties, you follow the rules or get tossed out bud.
Let the dog run free lol they don’t need a leash in backcountry! Maybe if they were going to the visitor center 🤡
P.S the dogs name is Snort and trained as a hunting dog I’m sure it’s very well behaved
You seem like a weird Karen type character.
KNOCK KNOCK Open up! It’s the fun police!
Good video, but weird that a gun was brought. We have lots of grizzly bears at our mountain fishing lakes but bear spray is only real answer.
Looks like a small caliber rifle. Likely to be used if grouse or rabbits were encountered. An iron sites style small caliber rifle is definitely not for bears.
Notice he was carrying spray as well.
@@crazymusicJman The .22 was probably for small game, certainly not for bear.
@@crazymusicJman good point, never thought of that. I usually pack a slingshot it's a lot lighter.
Cal has no problem using spray or the big iron on bears, but that ain't the big iron and it's certainly not his bear defense.
