- OCT '17 UPDATE: before you start playing with the (re)programming options, just try to see if unplugging & replugging in the power cord will resolve your issues. If not, follow all the steps in the video and text below.. ;-)
Details in Section 7 on page 23 of www.geniecompan.... As identified in the video, the key (for mine, at least) is to UNPLUG the opener FIRST and then after plugging it back end perform the actions in Step 1a.
Brother I owe you a dinner. The power went out and my wall unit quit working I then tried to get it reprogrammed then I eneded up messing the remotes up. That unplug tip did the trick. Thanks again!
Gold star to you sir! I had the same issue and never ever would have realized I needed to unplug the unit. Tried without unplugging no dice. Then unplugged and worked like a charm.
Finally, the answer! Unplug, then plug the head back in, and follow the simple directions. This is a great video!
Thank you! I was literally about to call a repairman after watching several videos for any info. I thought I would watch one last video...yours! The unplug and plug back in worked like a charm!
I hear ya! I made this video as much for me as it seems like something I "get" to do every few months and wanted to capture the steps somewhere. :-)
Thanks for the unplugging tip!
Hugely frustrating...
Finally worked.
You are the man. Thank you. You weren't kidding about that unplug & plug in step.
Thanks- worked perfect. I had issues resetting as well and after seeing your video, unplugged and then tried again- and....bingo! Works!
Thank you. The unplugging is exactly what was missing to make it work.
This worked on my Genie Model 2027. The unplugging and replugging in of power was NOT mentioned in the installer/user manual. Thank you, Sir!!
Thank you . . . I hate this garage door opener. Also, flipping the breaker in the garage worked for me as well . . . I was too lazy to back my car out and get a ladder just to get to the plug.
I have to thank Lester Martin for his video. My remote was not working. I watched many videos and tried to re-program, but it did not work. I was about to call someone to take a look at the problems. Finally I found your video and you highlighted unplugging and re-plugging in the power cord. It works and saved my money!
Glad it was helpful to you. :)
The unplug and plug back in helped. I tried the reprogramming several times before this. Thanks!
this is sooo much better than the videos that Genie makes.
Short and straight to the point video. Made it very easy to program my remotes 🤙🏼
Power reset was key and greatly helped. Thank you so much!
The unplugging was the key in my case! Thanks Lester!
🎉
Thanks, this helped my situation. I have been working with Genie support for 2 weeks thinking it is the circuit board - the did not ask me to do what you have recommended here.
Lifesaver! Thanks for the tip about unplugging. Worked like a charm!
Thanks so much. Couldn't figure out why none of my openers were working. Just had to unplug/replug and they all work again. Mine is model 2042.
I guess it's the classic "Did you try turning it off and back on again?" thing. Haha
Don't forget to count to 10 before turning it on! haha!!
I love you... How did I not think of unplugging it and plugging it back in... 🤦♂
I tried to use the manual couple of times it never work. But this video was really helpful, it worked.
Thanks
Thanks for the tip. I had to unplug the opener and plug it back in. Then, I was able to program.
As I "get a chance" to re-evaluate this every couple of months (thanks, genie!), I have found out that most of the time I'm better off just unplugging and plugging the opener back in BEFORE I start messing with the reprogramming remotes path. It ~~seems~~ that (at least sometimes) the problem is not really with the remotes or the "codes", but that the opener over time gets into a buggy cycle of just not accepting the requests correctly. I'm thinking that this is the case most of the time (meaning, no need to reprogram), but that I was masking the problem by the fact that the first thing I did was reprogram the darn thing which then destroyed any linkage between the remotes and openers that were there. So... my recommendation is if/when this happens again, just power off/on the actually opener and see if that gets you going. Good luck and if you did "get a chance" to help me validate this hunch, I'd sure appreciate a follow-up not if you get the time. Thanks.
And yes, as I verified this very morning, it seems that in most cases I'm probably able to just un/re-plug the opener and my problem gets fixed. Obviously, if I start playing with the reprogram options I have more work. I made some updates to the main text for this video to suggest just trying this first.
Thank you so much! I canceled the appt I had with the garage service people since you helped me figure it out myself!
saved a few buck$, nice!!
Thank you very much!!! First time in six years that this has happened.
Thank you so much! Quick and easy. Most importantly, to the point!!!
Worked like a charm with mine if I unplug it as well, thank you!!
Hell yeah dude. This just saved me so much headache. Worked for my model 2022 like a charm!!
Thanks! Customer service failed me, but youtube never will...
Yes, yes, yes!! Thanks for the tip about unplugging the power cord. It works! I love you, too! ;-)
I'm feeling the love!!! Glad it helped!
Thank you! These are the best instructions out there. I also had to unplug it first.
The unplug/replug was key. Thanks!
Very clear instruction. It worked, thank you very much! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
The unplug hint....you rock!
Worked perfectly. Thank you for saving my Sunday !
Thank you for making this video, the unplugging helped.
Great video. Worked perfectly!
Thank you. All three of my clickers stopped working and nobody else mentions unplug and re plug.
I just finally figured all those help desk "unplug and count to 5" routines were worth a shot and it was all it needed (and I could NEVER get them all working going down that darn reprogramming path like the docs showed; haha)
Thanks super helpful!!
You just save my life. Thank you!
So simple. Thank you!
Thanks for this!
Thank You!!! You are awesome
You’re the man. Thanks for the help!

This actually worked. Manufacturer site didn't work at all!
THANK YOU!!!!!
You are the best. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
works perfect thank you!
Thank you
I love you thank you
Worked great!! I love you, man! ;-)
I love you, too! hehe
Thanks for helping me again! Do you have any idea why this happens every few weeks?
nope; mine doesn't have any regular frequency -- just when it wants to make me mad. :)
THANKKKK YOUUUUUU
Why does it go out approximately once a month? I have a friend who used to live with me who has his car internal garage door opener programmed to my garage door and when he comes over and hits his internal garage door opener in his vehicle, at screws up MY openers. Do you have a similar situation my chance? Maybe a college student coming home and using their internal garage door opener in their vehicle?
Mine doesn't do this with any regular cadence, so I can't see any rhyme or reason to it. Trust me, I wish I could figure out what the root cause it, but I have gotten used to this quick fix. Good luck!
The big problem is someone in your neighbor who use the same brand name Genie Garage Door Can Open your Garage Door. For example, A man rents a room in your house, now he is leaving but he does not return the Garage Door remote control and someday he comes back he still can open your Garage Door. What we do now?
You can still go through the re-learn button mess which I believe makes all remotes no longer work until going through that process. My frustration was that even with that I could not get my remotes to work until I just do a Windows-like reboot. Good luck!
@@LesterMartinATL Thank you, sir, for the reply. We try to reset reboot and do over and over but finally, a guy who rents a room in that house still open garage door. We have to buy a new one garage door with new remote control number from 9 to 12 code. We change the new one then the bad guy can not open anymore.
@@gngd5351 well... that just sucks and I hate to hear that. Sounds like you found a terrible exploit. Ugh. I'm clearly no advocate for or against this Genie opener (it's just the one the house had) and this is yucky news. Best of luck and thanks for sharing your experience.
Thnx man
If second remote was stolen and I reset the one I have, will the remote that was stolen can it still open the garage or did the code change
Yes, if you did the full reset code it will invalidate any existing opener until you resync it. :)
Thank you
HELP. Mine don’t close down. The only way i could close it down is pushing the buttons from the thing. The WALL button don’t work FOR some reason. HELP.
Wish I knew how to help. I was just sharing the trick that seemed to work for me. Good luck!
How in the world do you set it up with the genie keypad? Nothing works no matter what directions I find or follow
sorry i wasn't able to help you out. this just worked for me (consistently) and wanted to share as all those programming instructions (after it was ALREADY working) never worked for me. good luck!
Mine still won’t work. I’ve tried two remotes and unplugged it twice. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
at the end of my "magic". good luck & feel free to reply back if you get a fix.
Will this work with my chamberlain universal remote
likely so since when I do this, I don't usually have to reprogram anything that was working before and just stopped working. basically rebooting the darn opener. good luck!
My belt snapped and I cannot find a replacement belt anywhere ( 7ft) can anyone help?!
cool
Okay guys so I've tried doing everything I can seem to get it to work any advice
sorry, this is the only trick i know. good luck!
sorry, you hit the extend of my "handyman" services. did you get it working?
It won't reset, look right is still red
I have tried this twice now and it's still not working but thanks for the video anyways
sorry it wasn't any help. if you figure it out, would love to hear about what you did. good luck!
Lester Martin we bought a new remote and it works great.
I'm prolly not too far behind y'all as I had to do my (monthly) unplug/replug trick again this weekend
The video is helpful and is correct in its usage/sequence. After a power outage for example it faces a whole other problem as the sequence (lights behave differently) than the video. Unplug your power cord.. wait.. then plug back in... follow video steps again, it should work
Dude, you same me some bucks, where should I send you a check
Pay it forward by picking up the tab of the person behind you the next time you are in a drive thru. :)
Light is still red
None of this works for me. Genie make crap products. Would never had dealt with this piece of junk if it wasn't already installed in the house when I bought it.
I sure can't defend them (Genie) as this is clearly a screwed-up hack and I seem to have to do it about once/month. Good luck!!
Thank you!!! 🙏 Worked like a charm!
worked thanks
Thank you
