    Same as English, a possibly ongoing activity in the past vs a concluded one, e.g. 'he went' vs 'he is gone'. Great lesson, thanks. I love this kind of stuff. Reminds me of Hebrew and Latin.

    Sounds like imperfect tense vs this sort of modal tense in which we attach "used to" to the verb to convey an ending of that state. Although the imperfect tense is not exactly existent in english, it could be roughly built like:
    *I was eating VS I used to eat...*
    Really imperfect tense is king in french but we do use it in spanish a lot too. I guess it's pretty common in other romance languages too.
    English is a weird language, not the best to explain other languages due to these types of gaps.
