  • Just because you are just beginning your crafty collection of a certain supply, does not mean it doesn't deserve its own organization system. I do not have many metal dies, but they were already out of control just being thrown a metal bin. Time to share my new storage solution! All the supplies I used are linked below!

    You will want to keep the count for the number of dies in each set. You can know if you have lost a die. Also you will want to get an extension magnet tool (from the hardware area) to pick up dies and other metal items on the floor or in the trash.

      You don't know how many times I have had to tear apart my trash can to find a tiny die. I have also gotten down and searched around on the floor. It sucks. Great idea for the extension magnet tool. Thanks for sharing.

    I did this last year with the Lowe's vent covers. I used to have them in three ring notebooks. Now I use them more often. I put a little label on the bottom for the number of dies, that way I count each one to make sure none are missing, before putting them away. It saved me from losing some a couple of times. First time I saw one of your videos. I look forward to watching more.

    I store mine like this, but I have a lot. I store then by category.... birthday, large & small words, flowers, critters, Christmas, etc. Then I file the categories in alphabetical order. I have 4 of the style bins that you have only the larger ones. I also cut plastic file folders to fit as dividers between the categories. Different color for stamps, dies and stamp&dies, and stencils. I also use some of the pieces cut off the files as place markers when I pull out a die or stamp so I know when it goes when putting it back. And, I learned something great from this video too, the cabinet liner stuff in the bottom is a great idea. Thanks for the great video.

    I bought the magnetic vent covers also from Home Depot though for a pretty cheap price. But I glued mine in the inside of my craft room cabinet doors and put my most used dies on them. So, I just open up my cabinet doors n there they all are. My matching dies that go with stamp sets I store with the stamps in the pockets like u have.

I also cut my magnet pieces to the size of my dies or how much room they will need. It may take a little bit extra time, but I end up saving on my magnet sheets.

    Thanks for another great organizing tip. I have organized my stamp sets in the same way as you showed in an earlier video and I love how easy it is to find the stamps. I had a few stamp sets that came with dies, so I put them in the same envelope as the stamp set separated by a piece of card stock. I do have several dies that don't go with any stamp sets so I plan to use this method you showed using some magnetic sheets I have left over from a different project. Thanks so much for the inspiration. Always a pleasure to learn from you.

    I also use the Home Depot vent covers. You "only" get 3 in a pack, and I don't think they're as thick as the ones you got, but I'd still rather save more $$$ for craft supplies. I cut mine to 5x7-1/4", and back them with cheap cardstock cut to about 5-1/4" wide by the same height. That gives them added support, and fills up the stamp pocket better. One tip for your storage bin. If you put some gripper-type shelf liner in the bottom, it will help keep your pockets from slipping down so they're lying on the bottom of the bin. I have used the waffle style liner, which works well. It's a bit on the pricey side, at least where I've found it (Bed Bath & Beyond), but you get a lot, so I guess the price per square inch isn't too bad. Yes, I'm that girl who breaks down costs by unit to compare prices of things! LOL I suppose Target might have it cheaper. Of course, as for pockets slipping, I have so many stamps & dies in my collection, fitting them into the bins/drawers is more of a hassle than having too few! LOL Anyway, thank you for sharing your process. Take care, & have a wonderful day! :)

    I thought of using magnetic vent covers as well but couldn’t find them in my little town where I live so I gave up and bought some magnet sheets from the dollar stores. I am quite thrifty so I usually piece bits of magnet I get from old business cards, fridge magnets, etc to card stock and then place them in small photo albums from the thrift stores. Each album is designated to animals, flowers, etc. This works for me! Everyone has such unique storing methods. Tfs!

    Your idea is great. I bought 5" x 8" magnetic sheets,from walmart, put them in plastic file folder sheets and keep them in a 9" x 7" file folders. I label the outside of folder what is in them, "Christmas, background, fonts, etc. I have eight different folders. When I need a die, I can just go to the folder that has the die I want in it. This also works good because the plastic folders are thick and I have found that using the other thin ones, after getting the dies in and out often, the plastic starts to come apart at the sides. Thank you for your insights. It is nice to hear different ideas for storage problems.

    I use the home depot vent covers that are 3 in a pack and each 15 inches long and cut them to 10 inches, mount on chipboard with doublesided tape. The chipboard is cut to fit in a 8.5 x 11 sheet protector and then put in a 3 ring ZIPPERED notebook and organize by subject..i use the two left over 5" magnetic pieces and put them together to make a 10" sheet on the chipboard. So out of the home depot set you get 4.5 pages of magnetic chipboards in the sheet protectors.

    Home Depot or Lowe's has cheaper vent covers. A little thinner, but when in a bag it's not a problem, and as your collection grows, thinner equates to lighter weight. I have a large collection, I know about the weight!
    I sort mine by themes, (borders, floral, alpha-numeric, animal) rather than maker/brand. That way, I can just look for a particular type without having to go through all the makers. Saves time once your collection grows.
    I run a piece of card stock through my printer for the dividers, then use self-laminating adhesive sheets to cover them. Makes them a little sturdier, while also protecting them. I also use a corner rounder punch to round all the edges, as they will otherwise get a little bent over time. By using the printer, it saves on the labelling tape, and I can make it as big as I like - which makes it easier to see. Again, I have a large collection (several bins worth) so I need easy to see at a glance!

    I have stored small dies with the stamps and the vent covers are thin enough alone to slide into the pockets, most of the one that have matching dies are bigger than the stamps so I put a sticker on the dies in the 8x11 saying A-1 thru A-30, B-1 thru B-30 and when there is a die for the stamp, I mark the stamp with a sticker as S/D A-15 where the die is located. This works great as you collection grows and it will. I am up to starting D-1 thru D-30 and my second magazine rack. I do unbranded and branded stamps and dies.

    I organize my dies the same way using Lowe's or Home Depot vent covers glued to a white cardstock backer sheet which I inset into the Avery Elle sleeves. One tip: use your label maker to note how many dies (or stamps) are in each set. Saves the agony of finding a lost die in the carpet or trash can! Another tip: buy a small magnetic dish from the hardware or auto parts store to corral dies while you are using them. Losing a die from your set really hurts! Ask me how I know! I store my stamp sets in the Avery sleeves also, and they all are stacked in the same clear bins you use. Now, keep adding to your collection!

    If you are using the vent covers with a white back a trick is to cover that area with clear packing tape which will hold polymer and sticky foam backed stamps so you can keep the set together. Also, cut out the dies and then adhere the cut out to the white back for reference.

I have found the best deals is from researching wholesale places. I now buy my adhesive 3M foam tape for $24, the same size roll that costs everyone so much. Hello Gee Purpura,
      I was trying to find this on my Apple Computer, yet it doesn't come up in the Apple App Store, says search not found. I found it on my i-Phone in the App Store, however, it did not have very good reviews only 2.8 out of 5. Do you have a lot of dies, embossing folders etc? I have 365 Embossing Folders, over 2800 stamps, 200 punches and I miscounted, I have 463 dies. Would hate to sit and start entering everything only to find out it won't hold everything I have.
      I would love to know if it will upload to an apple Computer through the cloud. Also, if you put in a specific item, say a die, do you have to take a picture of your item or does it have the picture you can download to a specific drawer?
      Reading lot of comments about it freezing, how it needed a better camera. Can you upload a spreadsheet or does one have to type in everything individually?
      Sorry for all the questions, trying to decide if it would be worth my time. It says it's 99 cents, however someone mentioned in comments about having to buy storage space for $2.99 and not knowing if that is unlimited storage space which was not mentioned in the write up in the app store.
      I know you don't work for them but since you stated you have the app, I was hoping you might be able to answer the questions.
      Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you in advance. Linda

    also bought the roll of adhesive years ago and finally got all my dies on magnetic sheets I cut out. Having over 445 die sets, I found it much cheaper with the roll than buying vent sheets (which I did not like as well as the roll). I love having the adhesive on the back so I can get my dies on the front. (magnetic side) copy the dies, trim the paper and stick it to the adhesive side, this way I know if I have not put a die back. I also have an inventory spread sheet of each die listed by name, mfg, date purchased, amt pd and purchased from and each die has been given a number such as Small Dies are SD-1; Medium Dies are MD-1 and Large Dies LD-1 and so on. They are in see through sturdy plastic bags. On address labels I typed the die name and another label with die number. The name of die label is top left corner and die number on the right side outside of the package. Also on the magnetic (with the dies) I used my labeler and put the die number so I get it into the correct package. It was a lot of work but oh so worth it. I have had so much use out of all my dies doing it this was. My husband made me a beautiful cabinet with full extension drawers for all my dies, SU Sets, other stamp sets, embossing folders, glitter, embossing powders etc.

    I like this idea very much. Those magnets look strong and sturdy and not the least bit flimsy. Would you recommend adding a sheet of cardstock to the back of the pocket so your magnets don’t stick together? Also, how would you store dies that also have coordinating stamp sets? Would you store the die with the stamp set, or store the stamps in the stamp bin and the dies in the die bin, with labels indicating where the coordinated set is stored? I’ve also seen people put in parenthesis on the label next to the name of the set the number of dies in a set, that way you know at a glance how many dies should be in that envelope when you’re in the process of putting things away. For example, your nested tag set has 14 pieces, so it would say Nested Tag Dies (14). Thanks for the great ideas. I’ve been looking for those clear acrylic storage boxes. Will check these out. I think I’d like them with higher sides but not sure that’s an option.

    • @ScrappyWife
      @ScrappyWife  4 года назад +2

      Yes, cardstock (thick) would keep them from sticking. And yes, I would probably store coordinating stamp sets with the die, but if I had several of those, they would be in their own bin, separate from stamps and dies. Hope that makes sense!

    You can buy already cut 5 x 7 magnets sheets -- and also 4 x 6 cheaper than vent covers and I find cutting the magnets -- you can get 25 5 x 7 sheets for like 17. or so and no cutting -- they come in different thicknesses the thicker are more expensive.

    I bought a die storage binder and it's useless - the magnetic sheets aren't anywhere near strong enough to hold the dies and the minute you store it upright (like a book on a shelf), all the dies fall to the bottom of the pocket!

    This may be a silly question, but how do you use the metal dies?

    • @marziahkiehn7004
      @marziahkiehn7004 4 года назад

      With a cutting machine. Use the shapes in making cards or decorating scrapbook pages. Also some dies make envelopes or little boxes.

    • @ScrappyWife
      @ScrappyWife  4 года назад

      Yup, you use them with a die-cutting machine to cut shapes out of paper.

    Hello, what if I don't use the plastic wraps??? Is there any chance that if I don't use the plastic wraps the dies will be damaged?

    • @ScrappyWife
      @ScrappyWife  3 года назад

      I think they would stick to the metal, but could get knocked off if you are moving them around a bunch.

    I want to sort mine by type rather than maker so all my words are together, all my Christmas are together, etc. I will be putting all my sky related dies together, i.e. hot air balloons, clouds, stars, etc. And all my animals will be together, and all my butterflies, birds and dragonflies will be together.
