I'm stuck on this spot in the registration process. I haven't made any sales or anything yet, just getting everything setup before I fully launch my business.
I also don't know what to put here. I surpassed the 30k as a small supplier. Do I put the 30k plus any sales I made after that or just the amount in taxable sales after the 30k?
On the CRA Business Account registration on your video, portion where you enter the SIN, and the Tax information ---if the Corporation is brand new (no taxes has been filed to CRA), do you enter the Income information specific to the applicant (personal income filed to CRA when the applicant is an Employee or prior to opening a corporation) ? thanks
If you change your operating name, you can do this inside your CRA My Business account www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/changes-your-business/change-operating-name.html

Do you know if you can do this through represent a client? The client has a CRA account for their business but the business is not registered for GST/HST. CRA is hopeless.
I have a relative who is about to buy a farm in Ontario and needs to know how to register for a Hst / Gst Number to maintain the farmland that is already farmed by a tenant farmer but only receives $3500. per year for 40 acres of the 99 acres of farmland. There is a house and a barn on the property as well.
Thanks a ton fellow Canadian! Been putting this off but been noticing an ever huger daily cut from my livestream donations/memberships and been trying to refigure this back out! MadLove from CbassPlays and dropped you some channel love! Thanks again, keep up the great work!
My husband recently became a sole proprietor of a cleaning business. We are "green" to the self employment world! Your videos have been super helpful, thank you! Do you have any videos on the in's and outs of how to calculate business use of home expenses? For example... we have a small office and a garage used for both business and personal. At tax time I'm trying to determine just how to calculate such things as the amounts of cellphone, home insurance, heating, hydro, property tax that we can claim as expenses. Also some simplified info on CCA would be great!
A great idea for a future video! But to help there are some great articles that discuss this further, and another suggestion is to hire a tax accountant come tax time. It's money well-spent because they can point out things you didn't know, offer advice, plus their services are a tax deduction too. www.bdc.ca/en/articles-tools/money-finance/manage-finances/tax-deductible-expenses
Do you have the step by step process on video format that someone can follow in order to get the Farm Tax Rebate for the property. I understand they would have to get an opinion of value for the Farmhouse and either one acre or two acres alone and separate from the remainder of land ?
I don't have a video on that specific tax program but found some helpful resources here www.mpac.ca/en/MakingChangesUpdates/QualifyingFarmTaxIncentivePrograms and ofa.on.ca/resources/farmland-tax-puzzle/
I couldn't find it either. This is a question I see repeatedly on these HST videos. The government of Canada constantly changes things on their website and forms and makes this more difficult than it should be!
Hi Thanks for the video it's very helpful! For the actual annual domestic GST/HST taxable sales, what if you just started the business and are not sure what you will be earning?

Thanks for this useful information. i want to know a little bit more about one thing I'm on the verge of securing a contracting job, and I've been asked if I'll operate as a sole proprietor or as an incorporation. I've opted for sole proprietorship. Would having just a GST/HST number and business number suffice for this contract work, or do I need to formally register myself as a sole proprietor? When I inquired at the nearest registry, they mentioned a registration fee of around $110 for sole proprietorship.
Hello Jessica this is a great video, I have one doubt if you answer, thank you in advance. I registered my incorporation and got a business number on registration, now to charge my customers GST/HST, do I need a separate GST/HST Number or I can use the same Business Number which I got when I registered my incorporation?
Why would you need a GST number if you have no sales? You can run a sole prop without registering for GST/HST. With that said, you can voluntarily register for GST/HST if you want even if your business has zero sales.
@@jessicamoorhouse Hi Jessica, I'm in a similar situation. I have no sales but I know the business will generate over 30k+, what would we enter in the annual worldwide and domestic gst/hst taxable sale to move forward in the application? Thank you!

Hi! Can you provide a list of things to be done or a checklist to fully register the newly incorporated business? I really need a guide and i hope you can help. Do we need to hire bookkeeper and a lawyer as a newly opened business? Thanks for your help.
Ownr has some great guides on this partners.ownr.co/jessicamoorhouse7002 but I'd highly recommend working with an accountant to help you set things up and provide advice and they can also recommend a lawyer to work with if you want them to incorporate your business instead of you doing it on your own either through the CRA's website or Ownr.
Well I have a small solo that I just started I asked an account if I need registration for hst for write off the expenses and he says yes only registered the business would not write off the expenses and I need to register for hst as I make under 30k I would no need to collect from my clients (cleaning biz) a friend of mine said that as I registered for the hst I need to collect the hst tax. I am so confused
So, not sure exactly what your accountant told you but it sounds like they may have been talking about input tax credit, not business deductions? If you're a sole proprietor, registered or not, you can write-off business expenses. However, if you want to reclaim some of the GST/HST you've paid on your business expenses, then you'd have to register for GST/HST, start collecting it from customers, but then you can reclaim any GST/HST you paid on business expenses from the amount you collected and remitted to the government.
Hi Jessica, thank you for your response. When I am creating the GST number and, it is time to put the Taxable sales. Which amount should I put, if my annual earnings for example is $60,000 CAD(taxes included). Should I put $30k (because only after $30k I must pay taxes) or Should i put $60k?
The threshold is $30k, you can find more info here www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/gst-hst-businesses/when-register-charge.html
Doesn't look like it. As stated on their website "The CRA uses your personal postal code to verify your identity. The CRA checks the postal code you enter against the postal code we have on file for you as an individual, not the one on file for your business." They need the physical address for where you live. www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/gst-hst-businesses/account-register.html
Hello Jessica! I am a RUclipsr and I only make money from the ads revenue. Should I register for gst-hst even if RUclips already collect the taxes on the ads revenue on the creator behalf? If yes what should I put in my actual domestic gst-hst ?
It's up to you whether you want your business to be a sole prop or corporation. But if you're running your business right now and are already selling your course, then you're a sole prop. You're automatically a sole prop if you just start a business under your legal name. You may want to watch this video comparing both business structures ruclips.net/video/WvLyt6r3HT8/видео.html

Hello Jessica, How can we check business details for sole proprietorship business customer? Can we access the tax portal or do we have any other work around?
Not sure what you're asking? What business details? Your tax portal would just be your CRA My Account for income taxes and CRA My Business Account for GST/HST.
Jess,, someone charge me HST and I live in Manitoba (GST+PST we charge) what amount or percentage we may account for GST - imput tax credit when we will consider the expenses. . I would love to know that.
This is a really dumb question, but you create a new CRA account...I already have one for myself as an individual, but do I also need to make a separate account for my business?

I don't really see a benefit of registering for GST/HST if you're not earning any business revenue yet. I'd likely hold off until you started earning money in your business just because it is more admin work.
@@jessicamoorhouse It could be a benefit if you are already incurring expenses for the business because it will allow you to claim the GST/HST paid on these expenses as ITCs and receive a refund of for this amount on your first HST return filed.

For the sole proprietorship, entering the legal name… it said to put the name on the tax return. Does that mean like “Jane Smith”, the persons name? Or the name they registered the business with, so “Dolls villages shop” or whatever it is. Thanks!

Thanks for the great video. If i need the GST/HST number, I have to wait until I get the security code, and login to see it. or we can get the GST account number immediately after this process ? thanks
Thank you for this video! There appears to be a few extra steps to get to the "register now" button - not sure if that changed in the last year since the video was posted. But a great video to share with my contractors at work.
Hi Jessica. I have registered GST/HST number in Ontario. Do I need to get a separate number by registering my business as a sole proprietor (master business licence number)? Thank you
I subscribed on this video. I recently got my channel in the process of monetization. Google requires a GST/HST registration number which also requires a business number. My channel makes 0 dollars at the moment. So would I input 0 dollars in the annual worldwide taxable sale section? Or do you have a video on the business number set up section?
Im in similar situation - i was a freelancer/self employed and had my gst/hst registered under my name. Also all my sales/income are from abroad, so this means i dont charge gst/hst to my clients, but can claim gst/hst from my expenses? Thank you
No, you have to close down your sole prop GST/HST account, and open a new one for your corp. And yes, you don't collect GST/HST on sales outside of Canada, only on sales within Canada. As for business expenses, the deductible expenses include any GST/HST you incur on these expenses minus the amount of any input tax credit claimed. You can find more info here though since you're incorporated I'd highly recommend working with your accountant to create a system to easily track everything in Quickbooks or some other software. www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/gst-hst-businesses/complete-file-input-tax-credit.html www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/sole-proprietorships-partnerships/business-expenses.html

Hi Jessica. Super helpful! Thank you. I'm in a similar situation at the moment. Transitioning from sole proprietorship (in my own name) to corporation. Can the same BN be used across both? I know you mentioned a new HST account is to be opened for the corp. Is there a need to close the HST account on the sole proprietorship? Any other steps to be kept in mind?
Yes, you'll need to close your sole prop and then register a new GST/HST account for your corp. Because it's considered a different or new business, that's why you can just transition it over. Would also recommend speaking with an accountant about other things you may to do like a S85 rollover.
Hi Jessica 👋, I'm just starting with my online business. No revenue of any sort. I look it up and i seems i need to register my business as a corp since i didn't use my own, did i understand that correctly? Since i have to register my business I'll get a BN and then I should register for CRA correct? Then I can charge gst/hst in my website? Honestly everything is so daunting and I'm so lost.
Update: I registered my business under sole proprietorship. Got my BIN. Should I register for gst/hst. I'm categorized as small supplier but I don't understand whats the taxable supplies mean. If I don't register yet since my revenue is under 30k will there be no tax when people check out on my website? But I'll still need to pay taxes on whatever revenue i made that year.
You can simply be a sole proprietorship and just register your business under a different name than your personal name, you don't need to incorporate. You can find a lot of helpful info about business structures and getting started on the CRA website and Ownr's website (but you may also want to talk to a CPA). www.ownr.co/blog
Is GST/HST required if I’m a sole proprietor without making 30k yet. The reason why I want to apply for this is to get refunds on my business expenses. Thanks
It's not required unless you meet or exceed that revenue threshold. You can still deduct business expenses without being registered for GST/HST, however you can't claim input tax credits.
I haven't sent my first invoice in as a new business. How would I know my annual revenue. Not sure if I will need to register for gst/hst. Do I just guess what I think I will make this year?
You register once you pass the revenue threshold, unless you want to voluntarily register before so you can take advantage input tax credits. In other words, if you have just started your business, you don't have to register for GST/HST yet. But keep an eye on your revenue throughout the year and once you pass the threshold, then register.
You can find more info here about how to add another business to your CRA business account www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/e-services-businesses/business-account/help-business-account.html#help2d
You mean input tax credits? Because GST/HST has nothing to do with business expense deductions, but it can provide input tax credits (meaning you can back any GST/HST you've paid on eligible business expenses).
@@jessicamoorhouse what is ment by “you can back any gst/hst” isn’t that the same as business expense deductions? I am very new. Just trying to find out if I am allowed to write off things like inventory without a gst/hst.
How do you record the transactions for purchases and expenses in your books if you are not registered for HST yet? Do you still split it out and record it into an HST paid/collected account?
If you're not registered for GST/HST then you can't take advantage of input tax credits, meaning you won't get credited for any GST/HST you pay on business expenses. But in terms of how to records your business expenses for your books, I used Freshbooks for years and it was very easy to do (whether you want to record sales tax or not).
Hey Jessica, thanks a lot for your video. It’s very helpful. I am a sole proprietorship and just registered GST and BIN. currently I have two CRA accounts. One is my personal CRA acct and the second one is I created with GST & BIN registered. Do you know which account I should file my tax return as I’m a sole proprietorship? TIA
Sole proprietor income is same as personal income. So should I file my tax return in my personal CRA account? And the second account should be only for GST/HST? Thanks!
May I ask what you select if its an online business and all sales are done online? Also, if the business(es) are online, the mailing address would have to be the same, correct? Or is there a way to register a different address just for the business itself? If so, how can someone look into this further so that the business owners personal home address isn't exposed (even though the office and its home-based/online)
My business is online so it doesn't matter if you have a brick and mortar business or not. For business address, you can either select your home address or you can do what I did and use a mailbox service (for example I use www.bdc-canada.com/BDC/services/registered-business-address-main.htm

I have my business number and have applied for my license. I just wanted to confirm I can apply for my gst number now and do not have to wait until I have a revenue amount to enter? If so do I just place no revenue $0 when registering for my gst number at this time? Your time is appreciated and I look forward to your response. Thank you!
Yes, you do no have to wait until your business earns revenue before you register for GST/HST. The benefit to do this could be when you do earn revenue and charge sales tax, you could get some of that money back through input tax credit from business expenses. And if you're asked on the GST/HST application what your business revenue is, you would put what it currently is, so if it's zero then put that.
@@jessicamoorhouse thank you!! On another note. How would you recommend a self employed owner of a small business just starting should pay themselves? I have heard not paying yourself until a 3 month cushion is there. During the cushion do I just track my hours or not be paid for those? When did you start paying yourself? How did you go about it/ the best way to do it to be sure all is clean and clear and minimal room for error? Did you keep track of your hours and create your rate of pay and then when you reached a specific revenue you paid yourself? Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!
@@lisatruong4430 I paid myself right away because I didn't want to just live off my savings. I wanted to prove that this was a real business, which means you need to pay yourself a salary. But at the start because I didn't know how much my business would earn, I only took as much as I needed to pay my personal bills and contribute to my RRSP. I also monitored my income and expenses frequently to ensure, and if there was a lean month, then I didn't pay myself (and if there was a fat one pay myself). In terms of taxes, I use Wealthsimple Tax's calculator (used to be SimpleTax) and tried to figure out based on projections how much I might owe. But a good rule of thumb is set aside 25% for taxes.
I'd highly recommend talking to an accountant who works with farmers specifically for guidance.

I'm on the verge of securing a contracting job, and I've been asked if I'll operate as a sole proprietor or as an incorporation.
I registered my incorporation and got a business number on registration, now to charge my customers GST/HST, do I need a separate GST/HST Number or I can use the same Business Number which I got when I registered my incorporation?
what am i supposed to enter if i need a gst number but dont have any sales for goods or services yet?

You must include the total amount you earned for your business before you deduct business expenses during any 12-month period.
Thanks for asking this. I had no idea what to do here

Doesn't look like it. As stated on their website "The CRA uses your personal postal code to verify your identity. Hello Jessica! I am a RUclipsr and I only make money from the ads revenue. Should I register for gst-hst even if RUclips already collect the taxes on the ads revenue on the creator behalf? If yes what should I put in my actual domestic gst-hst ?
Hi Jessica, if i have a CRA My Account is the same credentials that My Business Account ? or do I have to register to my business account, too?
They are separate accounts and not connected. You would need to set up a CRA My Business Account if you don't already have one.
I have a question. I am monetizing a platform to sell. In other words a course. What would I need for a business sole or corp
It's up to you whether you want your business to be a sole prop or corporation. But if you're running your business right now and are already selling your course, then you're a sole prop. You're automatically a sole prop if you just start a business under your legal name. You may want to watch this video comparing both business structures

RST is not connected to GST/HST. They are different sales tax programs (RST is just Manitoba).
Hey there! I have a start up business, and I have not made a sale yet but should I still obtain a gst/hst just for the fact of write offs?

Hi there! Question- I have a sole proprietorship business and want to start collecting HST as I will be above the threshold this year. I also want to incorporate my business. Should I incorporate first and then get an HST number afterwards? Or does it not matter! Also, where can I incorporate? Thanks so much!!
First, highly suggest connecting with a tax accountant to help you with all this and give you specific advice. But yes in general, you'll want to wait until you incorporate because if you sign up for HST as a sole prop, then incorporate later, you'll have to close your sole prop HST account then open up a new one for your corp.
I try to register error 😢 why
Contact the CRA support team to find out the solution.
At 5 minutes and 15 seconds it talks about the certificate #, but I answered mine and it doesn't seem to be accepting it. I wish you spent a bit more time showing exactly what it looked like and where you got it from just to make sure I'm entering it from the right place and in the right way. Even if you put in dummy numbers it would be helpful.
Your certificate number is simply your corporation number which is 7-digits but no punctuation. You can find it on your Articles or Certificate of Incorporation. So for example it would be nnnnnnn1 (not nnnnnnn-1). If you have further trouble, contact the CRA and they can help you. www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/corporate/contact-information.html

does sole proprietorship require to register for GST/HST?
Only if you reach the $30,000 threshold. More if can be found here: jessicamoorhouse.com/sales-tax-in-canada-hst-gst-pst-self-employed/
How can a U.S. based company register for a Canadian GST/HST account? If the officers of the company are not Canadian citizens and don't have Social Insurance #'s, is there a way to register the business using the officer's Social Security #'s instead? I've been trying to research and call CN but I cant seem to figure out the process. Please advise.
This is something an accountant would be able to help with who has experience with cross-border corporate tax.
@@jessicamoorhouse No worries, thanks so much! Very helpful information!
What is someone registers only after they exceeded the 30k treshold?
You may be on the hook to pay the GST/HST you were supposed to collect. More info can be found here www.personaltaxadvisors.ca/help-im-late-registering-for-a-gsthst-number/
@@jessicamoorhouse this article was very useful, thank you! If we exceed the 30k treshold the first time this year and apply for the GST account only at the end of the year, do we have to pay GST after the whole year’s income or only after the point it exceeded the 30k?
