Power Creep in Genshin is Greatly Exaggerated

  • Power Creep in Genshin Impact is something that comes up on occasion yet rarely actually happens in huge jumps. This is especially surprising for a game entirely driven on selling you new characters. I mean they're all pretty cool, they don't need to be OP to sell, it certainly doesn't hurt though.

      Most definitely a combination of both. If a character has one without the other then that's where the community becomes divided - if a character has good design but is not the best meta-wise (*cough*candace) then they will still have a dedicated fanbase. On the other hand, if a character's strength is their main selling point over their design (bennett) then there are people who refuse to play them on principle. It's a fine line to walk imo.

      It's also like the 5 stars at the time were kinda mediocre. I cannot for the life of me fathom why Diluc, Klee, Qiqi and Keqing (even for a time) came out as bad as they were. There constellations are a mishmash that don't really make sense or do much of anything valuable compared to how things are, their playstyle, cons and passives conflict eachother too, makes no sense. So yeah, it kinda makes no sense. Even for some of the limited characters Venti a battery passive but an Anemo DPS support < Raiden. Xaio's cons are mediocre C2 and C4 are fantastically worthless, C6 only works if you're mobbing. Mostly cons for Childe are convenience, don't really do anything for his damage. Over time at least you see them slowly improving or well, the switch kinda flipped with 5 and 4 stars until they reached their equilibrium with Inazuma and then Sumeru where things just go a bit down hill steadily from there. It's interesting but I still don't think they've found a perfect balance and tbh, I don't think they will for a long time yet.

    A lot of the “powercreep” just comes from new gameplay. Most people find new gameplay more interesting than old gameplay they’ve cleared every bit of content in the game with multiple times. People who switch mains often reflect this. They’re not really doing it because character B is more powerful than character A, but it’s something new to experience. You could continue to play Jean as your Anemo DPS throughout the full length of the game or you could try out Xiao, Heizou, and Wanderer to mix up your gameplay. You don’t need to unlock every character’s maximum potential to clear the content in the game, which is why it’s silly when a character comes out and people say they suck because they don’t have a million damage per screenshot showcase. Some newer characters are better, some are still beaten by early game characters. But the newer characters will be a little more popular just because they help mix it up a bit.

      It's a good thing you used Wanderer/Xiao and Heizou as an example because it kinda gives me something to counter with.
      From what I have experienced from Xiao and Wanderer. Wanderer doesn't actually feel better to play than Xiao or even Heizou tbh, he feels different absolutely but not better, not necessarily. For me Wanderer feels like he needs more babysitting, which is interestingly enough the case for a lot of new characters and the funniest thing is, that they don't really do more damage than their older counterparts, so it's not like they bring that to the table as a counter either.
      Come to think of it, I don't even think that there's all that much fun creep tbh, I mean, sort of in the overworld with exploration and stuff but in combat, in the abyss? Nah, not really, not recently anyway. Like after a while, in my experience, the fun of the gameplay, especially when you're maining specific characters, fades after some time and then really what keeps them, is the value they bring outside of gameplay. For Wanderer that will be exploration I guess.

    • @harm0ny_
      @harm0ny_ Год назад +48

      @@F1ll1nTh3Blanks I totally get not enjoying Wanderer, but for me personally he’s very fun! But even if you don’t enjoy him as much as others, my point is mostly that you may find Jean more fun than Heizou but still want to run Heizou since he’s something new and you want some different gameplay. It’s less a “fun” creep and more a “new” creep. No one has gameplay like Wanderer, so he’s interesting and new. People will probably go back to their favorites when he’s no longer the cool new flying guy, but for now most people find it cool to fly around not even really taking abyss and the like into consideration.
      But let’s be real, Wanderer power creeping every other character in exploration is so real lol

    I think Genshin is less susceptible to power creep as a whole because it deals with team comopositions rather than singular characters, so it's regularly that a new character will come out that will make older characters jump up the tier list. For example, one of my favorite 4-stars Kuki went from being kind of mid to suddenly becoming extremely relevant with the introduction of Dendro. With small tweaks and new character introductions, some earlier characters that have fallen off a bit can surely return to prominence.

    As a Venti main, Kazuha main, and recent Scaramouche main, the niche advantage of using Venti for verticality is that it's good for co-op exploration. I remember helping a newbie who was stuck once with a Venti hold E current, they were cheering and it was so cute. But honestly for my farming on map I'd run a gremlin triple anemo team of Kazuha (sprinting stamina reduction), Venti (gliding stamina), Xiao (climbing stamina), and Zhongli (protection and breaking ores). Climb Zhongli's pillar first, use Venti hold E, plunge, switch to Kazuha and jumpy jump, easy peasy!
    Currently I switched Zhongli (unless I need the shield or quick ore breaking) for Wanderer for crossing water and short stamina-less sprinting. I'm tragically Yelan-less and waiting for her rerun in fact. As much as I love Xiao -also my main, I have an anemo boy problem- he's the weakest link and his passive can be replaced by an infinite climbing Kazuha trick that works for like 50%-60% of mountains

  • @cheezystix5940
    @cheezystix5940 Год назад +39

    I think another thing that contributes to power creep is enemy design.
    A lot of other gachas rarely ever introduce more basic enemies for the player to fight unlike Genshin and usually just cycles through the same types or variations of enemies forever. They might occasionally throw in a new boss every now and then to change things up but for the most part a lot of fights are similar and thus characters that are bad against those types of enemies are gonna stay bad while the characters that are good against them are gonna stay good and just get stronger and stronger as more new characters release.
    Meanwhile in Genshin, every few patches or so they introduce new enemies and bosses to fight and because of that the meta is constantly changing and adapting to these new enemies. For example, I remember back in the day that shielders like Zhongli were really popular and as a result that kinda made healers obsolete since shields flat out could negate damage while healers required you to take damage first before they could heal it. Which isn’t to say that healers weren’t useful but they for sure weren’t as viable as having a shield. However then during Inazuma they introduced Rift Hounds which did damage through shields and that completely shifted things. Now healers had a lot more importance in teams and became almost a requirement for a lot of abyss teams to have.
    So far I think Hoyo has done a good job at making enemies and bosses that allow for more and more characters to become viable.

  • @vanaah727
    @vanaah727 Год назад +174

    Personally, no. I think it'd be pretty predictable to say "every character is good!!" Because it's not a defense of their kit, it's just a defense of the character they like. However, totally no biased, I think most if not all 5 stars are pretty worth investing in. The meta is this game is quite interest and substitutions can always be made for teams. As we saw for xingqiu and yelan, they only added more potential synergy, not worse. Powercreep is virtually nonexistent in this game. Convenience is also a pretty major factor. Although Hu Tao is usually objectively better than Diluc, I wouldn't roll for her because the charged attack gameplay is pretty hard on mobile, and i already struggle with using Xiao on mobile. I also just don't enjoy the dying aspect of her kit, so there's always thing like that that can factor in to a character and eliminating power creep. The gameplay is so dynamic for each character rather than something like Fire Emblem Heroes, where power creep comes in the form of passives.

    I think the main reason there’s not much powercreep, is because a big portion of the community just doesn’t care, and hoyo is keeping the community like that by not making any new end game content as to not incentivize seeking power on characters, powercreep eventually causes the community to decrease in size, but with the model hoyo is creating, there’s not much powercreep and accordingly the amount of players keeps increasing.

    I think powercreep becomes less of an issue when you bring in the variety in playstyles (among other variables that comprise a character). Like hu tao, yoimiya, yanfei, and diluc get compared a lot to each other but their playstyles are different. Even moreso between ganyu and ayaka. When they stop considering variations in gameplay and focus only on power through one playstyle, that might be where the game will become more monotonous and predictable.

    One way Hoyo seems to make new characters interesting to pull for is their creative design. Past characters are more simple, easy for players to learn so as to get into the game with ease. And as the time passed, more creative play styles are introduced to add interest and diversity, ganyu, kazuha, xiao, yelan, wanderer etc, instead of simple hack and slash characters, which there are already plenty of. Players that are still looking to improve in power will choose meta units, while players that already consistently 36 star abyss will start looking to pull for fun characters (but not as broken as meta), which recently there's been a lot of. This avoids powercreep pretty effectively (as old characters are honestly still relevant, mona, jean, keqing etc still very much OP and useful in right teams) I love how Hoyo is going with this!

Imagine this: you're running catch on raiden, fav lance on xiangling and you need another ER weapon for any spear user. Getting engulfing lightning upgrades your raiden, gives you the chance to run catch on xiangling (or maybe rosaria if you have dragons bane and need a rosaria upgrade) and frees up the fav lance for a thoma/yunjin/shenhe/candace whoever needs it. That's also the case for any other weapon, even if not that insane as the spears do in this special case. It's not nessessarily only an upgrade for one unit but can be an upgrade for more characters

    power creep must exist, because players play game to grow their account, a game without power creep will quickly die due to players feeling a lack of progression. Genshin handles this fairly well by dividing power between elemental buff, weapon, artifact and characters. this allows characters to be relatively well balances, instead of their "stat" being the defining feature, their playstyle is instead what influence different character pick. Xiao who is one of the earliest character for example has the highest attack, yet people don't play him much because his playstyle make him limited and not great with most content, and as his popularity falls, genshin simply release a new artifact set to buff him. and then we have the infamous NATIONAL TEAM, where we have a meme that "every spear is a xiangling buff" which show that OG character become stronger too due to the way Genshin distribute power over several system. so while power creep do exist in Genshin, it is not build around character, this allows the characters to feel more balances... this is not to say there are no "power" difference between characters, but they are design in a way that for different battle, different character do better. there are some character are more flexible than other, the balance is not perfect, from the ratio of their use by the players we can still see who are the favorite, they are not all created equal, but they generally have enough room to be viable even if they are old. I still find Ganyu the best timmie abuser... ;)

    Hoyo uses the nature of elements and duo scaling to control the power and repetitiveness of characters. The appearance of Dendro really remade the grounds and made it so that Crit is no longer the only meta and made other older characters grounds to stand on. The very first characters are not as power mostly due to the staff not knowing the meta yet. Like Itto. Itto is powerful, but limited in Geo where he cannot vape and thus will not be too powerful. Diluc cannot compare to Itto, but he can vape. Ayaka is powerful, yes, but HoYoLAB made her kit so that freeze will be the more optimal choice than melt and made it so you can't melt all her strikes and maximise her Dmg. Nahida is absolutely cracked, but her constant Dendro app made it so she's more suitable for bloom than spread. Eula has insane scaling, but that's because you have to to be a physical DPS who cannot ultilise elemental reactions the same way others can.
    Heck my Kaeya is still one of my best characters. And I have every single character except for Yelan, Shen he and Nilou. And Childe is still firmly stamped in the meta with no doubt. Man just hit 1M on my acc last week I'm so proud of ma boy.

Venti was top tier until early Inazuma where he faded into irrelevancy (now being great again though), ganyu also had a few stages where there was either a cryo aura or cryo resistant enemies, or unfreezable ones where she was really not that good. And mihoyo are great at abusing this to sell more units. They almost always make the abyss easy for the new character.

    All and all, I play the characters I play such as Beidou, Xinyan, Dori, Mona, Noelle, and Rosaria etc. Playing them in my own ways make it more epic and more satisfying to play the game. As for the rest of the stuff that relates to powercreep, I don't see it happening ether in terms of weapons and artifacts, I just see it just being something to work towards without being sweaty about it.

    One particular thing I've Noticed with Genshin Impact is that the Devs seem to Make an Effort to give Damn near Every Character SOMETHING unique about them, sometimes that Unique thing is useful in combat, sometimes it's Useful outside of Combat, sometimes it's Just Funny... And a Few Select Characters Have SEVERAL unique traits, that can be Both Useful AND Funny... And those unique traits make it so that it can be fun and/or efficient to play ALL of the characters depending on the situation!
    Example 1, Amber: Amber is Generally Considered to be the Worst Character in the game, but that's Really just a Side effect of her Playstyle requiring Accuracy on the player's Part and Tactical planning, which are not traits that are Really encouraged all that Much in the Game otherwise (Also Low base stats, but that's fixable with gear and a good team)... But what's Funny with Amber, is that So Far she's the ONLY Character to get Extra Benefits from Doing Headshots on Enemies, Any other Archer Just gets an Automatic Crit, but Amber Also Gets a 15% Atk Buff, Which by itself may not seem like Much, but that Bonus Stacks with other similar Effects Such as from the Prototype Bow... Also there's an Exploitable Glitch with Amber that Allows you to Detonate her Baron Bunnies with an Overload Reaction, But only if it's her Charged shot that Detonates the Overload... You can Use these 2 Traits Together to Hilarious Effect... Throw 2 Bunnies at an Enemy, Make sure that the enemy is Primed with Electro (Raiden or Miko are both Great for this, Fischl can do it too if Oz Decides to aim at the right spot), Then Charge up and Take Aim at the enemy's Head, Release, Watch the shot do Damage that most people think is Impossible for Amber, And then the Two Bunnies at it's Feet Explode at the same time... All 3 hits Put together Will do (((261.8%+200%) X2) +223.2%(Auto-Crit) + 44.64%) Or Roughly 1146.8% (+Overload) Damage in the span of less than one second, To be adjusted for Crits... For a point of Reference Child's Melee Burst Does (804.1% + 255%(Riptide burst)) Or about 1059.1%(Oh and that's a Tartaglia with a Level 13 Burst Talent Level, so you'd need to get this 5 Star to C5 to Do this Much Scaling! You can't Buy Him from the Starglitter shop to get that!)... That's Right Amber's Weird Combo Technically has a higher Scaling that Child's Big Badaboom Burst, Which means Each point of atk she gets is worth that Much more, So that 15% from doing a headshot kinda comes into play here... Childe Probably Still outclasses her simply Due to the fact that he Can Vaporize the first Chunk of that, but it's Still a funny Notion... Oh and if you give her Elegy of the End and Noblesse Oblige while she's C6 She can technically give a Bigger Atk% Buff than any other character when she bursts(55-75% Depending on Elegy's Rank), so you know, Niche tricks... (BTW that Headshot bonus she gets, Means that Vs. Baishe, the Boss Hydra from the Last Lantern Rite Event, Amber actually Did more Damage than Ganyu Overall, well that and Reverse Vaporize every shot also helps with out-DPSing the "best Archer", Ganyu Main Tears taste so Sweet.... Odds are Baishe will be back soon enough so keep this in mind!)
    Example 2, Jean: Though Jean is already a pretty Strong healer in her own right (I'd Argue the best in the game To this day, Due to the fact that she can fully heal your entire team without risking them by putting them in the field to receive said heals, While Also Attacking!), what's Funny AND fun about her is her Specific enemy Positioning Mechanics. Where Other Anemos just kinda Blast their Thing and Enemies get Sucked in to a specific Spot, Jean Does that to herself, but then also Launches them in whatever place you Want said enemies to go... And the Funniest place to send them? Straight up of course! Against Enemies that aren't Super Heavy She can Launch them Really high, and when they Land, they'll take fall damage, which is proportional to their Max HP, so the Stronger the Enemy Was MEANT to be, the Harder it'll Hurt them (I've Seen Drops of over 100K against Beefy enough enemies, Fatui in particular are Fun to Air-Drop like that). What's more you can Increase the Height and Distance they'll go slightly by Using a Charged Attack beforehand, which Applies a Nearly unique Status condition(So far only Venti Also causes this status) on the enemy that Reduces their Weight and Kinda Lifts them up slightly, allowing you to YEET them even Further, his same Status effect makes it possible to Lift Larger enemies like Metachurls if you're in co-op (There's nothing funnier than Watching a Metachurl Drop from 3-4 Meters up and Taking an Absolutely Staggering Amount of Damage when it lands, IF your Allies know to Stop wailing and letting it hit the ground!)... Jean's Suction Move can also be used against things that normally aren't affected by Suction effects, Like Klee or Aloy's Mines, or Baron Bunnies, So it can help you reposition those things to all actually hit a Target rather than Pray the enemy Stumbles on them.... Oh and FYI, Baron Bunny's Fuse is 8 Seconds, In Case you wanna Have Fun Turning Hilichurls into Firework shows(Yes, if you time it Right you can Blow them up Mid Air to damage the enemy)...
    There's more Unique traits like this, generally at least 1 for each character that no other character can duplicate, but this is already a wall of Text, so I'll stop here.

    i think the power creep is more indirect in genshin
    for example most newer 5* units come with their own tailor made weapons and unique artifacts that work wonders on them
    meanwhile an older character like diluc is still stuck with crimson witch and wolves gravestone that would work okay on any pyro/claymore user but never skyrocket them to the meta on its own
    if either having a tailor made weapon or artifact is what makes characters stronger then characters whose best in slot equipment is still the general use items that no character really recieves a significant enough boost with will kinda succ by comparison.
    but obviously there is more to it than that like how diluc doesnt exactly scale off of any extra stat like er, hp, em, def, etc.. like newer characters so he literally cant get a weapon or artifact set that maximizes his potential, unless they release a decent 5* claymore with a crit substat that strictly scales off elemental infusion damage or some shit to let him raise his power ceiling to something more comparable to what we have nowadays.

    Genshin is pretty casual so having little to no powercreep is generally fine. It makes the Gacha a little more bearable instead of having patch-to-patch shilling & and powercreep (thus player FOMO) for meta, especially with the 50/50 nonsense.
    However the problem for me is at the end of the day, it's Gacha. Why should I have to expend 6+ weeks of Primogems just for a character that is laughably below the power standards of characters I already own, or just old ones at that? There is little incentive to pull for anyone as a unit lately. I have enough "waifus" and I can't be bothered to farm for a new one if they will just underperform and make my gameplay sluggish.
    The only upside I see is that I'm more inclined to save... therefore I will have more Primogems stacked until I see a unit that I like and that is powerful. For example, since Yae & Raiden's re-run, I saved up 70k+ primogems until the Dendro Archon. No luck but I got Nahida to C3 and I am happy even though I spent 600+ pulls that patch because she is very strong and compliments my favourite character, Keqing.

    The first time power creep did happen was with the controversy surrounding Zhongli. Hoyo was forced to puff him which in retrospective was bad for the game. After that every archon introduces some power creep and very occasionally with OP characters like Yelan. Luckily when power creep happens, it does not invalidate old characters thanks to the focus of team combos in this game. For example, Nahida is extremely OP but she also buffs electro across the board which used to be weak.

      Remember old geo resonance? Or old shields?
      He was pretty much a 3* character in the worst element.
      Now he is a good defensive option that competes with others like kokomi but isnt a strict upgrade.

    I love what they've been doing with more niche character design, but I can imagine newer players might not agree. If your first 4* characters are meant to be specific supports for certain 5* characters (Sara, Gorou and now Faruzan, for example) and you don't have any of those characters, then your early game is gonna be VERY difficult, if not impossible. I also feel it's also easy to forget how brutal early game can be and how some characters (coughcoughxiangling) are kind of useless during early game because good luck getting 200%+ ER with your 3* artifacts and weapons, or getting enough crit rate to reliably proc that R1 Fav Bow you get for clearing story because you can't get refines for it at all. And unfortunately every character that can ignore ER because their main kit is focused on only their skill, is a 5*. Or Fischl.
    I just wish they'd do a little more with Acquaint Fates, and maybe allow more pulls on the beginner banner so people have a higher chance of getting 1 or 2 of those broken patch 1.0 4*s to carry them through the game.

  • @marycrawford7209

    Ever since I started playing Honkai I have no complaints at all about powercreep in Genshin. That game’s meta is so impossible to keep up with (pretty much any new character that gets released is automatically the best in their class) that it feels kind and welcoming coming back to Genshin where day-1 release four stars and pretty early DPS (Childe is my main and he gets it done) are still all over the meta.
    Also helps that Genshin team building is much more interesting than Honkai, where most teams (with the exception of specific bosses like Benares) are just gonna be composed of one DPS and your two strongest supports from their same damage type. Genshin’s reaction system means that lots of different combos can be viable, which makes it hard to straight powercreep out any character because they could still be useful for certain roles in certain teams.
    The fact that Yelan came out, seemingly a straight 5-star upgrade to Xingqiu’s role, and yet she and Xingqiu somehow share space in the Hydro sub-DPS meta and can even be used together in some teams means that the power levels are doing fine.

    There's one thing people are forgetting when we talk about some character getting powercrept, This game is not pvp so Do whatever you want, The old characters are still gonna clear every single challenge if you build them right.
    Like if you use an overpowered character like Hutao which still hits hard
