  • In this video I show you how I notch and install the rear cross member.
    Important Notes:
    • Normally I would use all 2"x4" by 11 gauge or heavier rectangle tubing for a trailer build like this. I had to substitute material due to my supplier's stock.
    • The trailer in this video is being framed in the upside down position. I prefer building them this way because I can hand the tongue and the axle hangers easier and more accurately, which will be explained in future videos.
    • Fabrication Note- When fitting materials such as angle, channel, tube, etc., always leave a small gap in the fit up. This is especially important on a structural joint. Originally I caught a lot of hate on the social media reels for this particular clip because I said "perfect fit". I should have elaborated that this is not finish carpentry. For a weld to be structurally sound it must have full penetration. the best way to ensure that with these types of material is to allow a gap. On thicker material you'll see a "bevel" that flows into a "land" and then the gap. Thin materials like this 11 gauge tube, there isn't enough thickness to bevel and land.
    • One more thing- You can also make a template using cardboard or another chunk of channel for this kind of fit-up. As a buddy of mine once said: "Everybody likes their hot dog a different way"...
By the way, I have several sets of DIY plans available for smoker trailers on my website:
