They don't graduate in 4 years because they choose to get a masters degree on the specific field they want to work in. My guess is that Axl didn't want one

In his first semester he dropped 3 classes. Next semester he said he was going to "load up on credits" (Given Axl's poor work ethic at the time it makes me wonder how he did) but we can assume he passed an overloaded semester. Then later on in the story it mentions he got straight B's one semester which we can assume he improved in his studies and slightly matured. During his Senior year Axl finally cleans up his act and drops football to focus on school.
Its possible to graduate in 4 years even with a rough start. I flunked out completley my first year of Computer Science but when my parents cut off paying my schooling right after I had to make the choice to mature so I went to CC to get my A.A.B in IT and then get my B.S in Consumer Finance from tOSU all within 4 years.
I know what you are a asking is a simple question and its a fictional TV show and everything but that is a relatable question and its something most college kids go through throughout their educational career
