    Herc gets totally focused on Bruno right before he lunges. He just stares without shifting his gaze. That is guard dog behavior. Y'all need to break that look at once when he's starring at Bruno. He's treating Bruno as a danger.

      100%. Have to get that tension out of the leash. He's on edge and confused because he is sensing the tension. A relaxed, slack leash tells the dog he can be calm and relaxed, not "on guard". Herc needs to learn those same basic obedience commands that Bruno is learning - and doing great at.

    I think you need to tell herc no when he goes after bruno. Do not allow herc to think it is ok to go after bruno. You are the one in charge, not herc. Herc is just there to guard the goats, not to be their boss. And herc should not be bruno's boss.

    Tension on the leash will make you feel more in control but to the dog it communicates your anxiety which triggers a more aggressive posture.
    Walk them side by side but far enough apart you can keep the leashes a little slack and your own posture relaxed.
    I fear you are communicating to Herc the opposite of what you wish to. The longer you keep them apart the more weight and tension you are putting into the interactions. The older the puppy gets the more difficult it becomes.

      I agree 100%. Tense leash = tense owner. Slack leash = relaxed owner. If you want Herc to get along with Bruno, you have to get that tension out of the leash. Otherwise he's forever going to be "on guard" whenever he's near him. It's mixed messages to Herc and he is getting confused.

      It's a mistake, for sure. That is how dog fights happen. Herc doesn't "deserve" to be the Alpha dog just because he's the LGD. Heck, Nala is the boss in my opinion, which is great since she has a very calm yet authoritative energy to her. They should not be setting up the hierarchy for the dogs. The tense leash is only sending tension down to Herc. He needs to be led with a slack leash so he knows that Bruno is a friend. It's confusing him. Herc could stand to have some of the obedience training like Shanon is giving Bruno. He's a smart little pup and is doing well to sit and watch Shanon shoo the goats out of that pen. He's amazing actually. The fact that he is afraid of Herc is not a good thing. Reenforcing Bruno's fear as a good thing with Herc is the opposite of what you want to do. It certainly doesn't make Herc less of an LGD.

    You need to at least talk to a trainer so you get a better understanding of what you’re doing. YOU should be in charge not Herc and Bruno is just being a puppy. This is a very critical time and imprinting for Bruno. Much easier if you get it right and not have to correct later. I know you think you know what you’re doing but you are causing the issue not them.

    You know I was watching toward the end of the video with Hercules and Bruno. I noticed that every time Hercules lunge to Bruno, Kyle told Hercules good boy and petted his head. I think that Hercules thinks your telling him he's a good boy by lunging towards Bruno. Maybe if you tell Hercules NO, BAD BOY, or something he might learn not to do that. I think Hercules thinks he's supposed to attack Bruno. That's just my opinion. You know them better then anyone else. It just looks like you were telling Hercules he was a good boy doing that. That's why Hercules was wagging his tail. He thinks that's what you want him to do. "ATTACK AND KILL LITTLE DOG" 😆😲

    • @minx267
      @minx267 25 дней назад +17

      That's exactly the message it's sending. Herc thinks he's being praised for lunging and growling. he needs to be told No! When he does that and praised when he's ignoring him and not acting out. Mixed signals are going to cause more problems.

  • @wendyford2252
    @wendyford2252 25 дней назад +22

    What are you expecting Bruno to do as a job ? When herc lunges you need to tell him no sternly otherwise you are setting both dogs up for failure. Use a slack lead as much as possible and I would suggest a lot more work with Herc and his commands, he runs the farm which includes you two. Your fear of the two dogs hurting each other is translating to Herc and causing him to be reactive. I want you to succeed and sometimes loving something is telling them no.

There is sooo much to talk about in this video. They mean well, but don't have a clue. Thinking when you have a little knowledge about something and yet act like you are a professional can be dangerous. Of the Doss family channels that I watch (one I do not watch). all of these folks are too "soft" with their dogs, and they definitely have a fear of them. Nothing but affection, which is great, but discipline is needed too. Nala has aggression issues that were never corrected, and now they say they can't brush Herc...I left a comment (they actually left this one) and they responded if I wanted to be attacked, I could come and try to. I left a lengthy reply to that one but not sure if they even saw it. I love these folks, also want them to succeed, hope they can take our advice as helpful and not hurtful.

    People had mentioned when you got Bruno at such an early age that there can be behavioral problems and that is why he should have been introduced to Nala and Herc from the beginning, so he was taught dog social behavior. That is why he is so "wild" when he is with Nala. She is tolerant of him but will correct him when she has had enough. Herc has been with her since he was younger, so he knows his boundaries. You are trying to introduce your dogs with tension on leashes...tension creates tension. Herc's body posture was not of a dog wanting to meet another dog (Bruno's was), but one of a dog stalking another and ready to attack, look at his body language. And after he charged Bruno, you pet him (Herc), telling him its's okay, which translates to Herc that he just did something good. Herc was the aggressor each time. Bruno was willing to meet, not Herc. You should not have to get dizzy from following your dog--make your dog follow you. Herk's putting/pressing his head on the goat's shoulders and trying to mount is not sexual, it is dominance. I do not understand why you feel every animal you have must submit to Herc. You don't realize it, but you also submit to him. Please, if you don't care for what I am saying seek professional help from a reputable dog trainer/behaviorist. You mean well, but things can get out of control. I wish you and your dogs nothing but the best.

She is just like Bruno, always in our ShihTzus face, jumping on her and just won’t leave her alone. Luckily ours just ignores her or avoids her, I wish she’d snap at her to put her in her place. Puppies need to be at least 8 weeks so they learn boundaries from their moms.

    So what i see with Herc and Bruno, is yes they need to stay on the leads. You and Shannon will need to keep the distance but they need to walk beside you, when they hone in on each other, you need to distract them and turn around. When they respond to you by a command and they follow your command, reward them. Bruno will be easier, Herc is older but still young enough. It takes a lot of time and patience. Also being they are so big, they make training harnesses that will help keep them from pulling you. You should always lead them, you are their Alpha, they should always be by your side. They are good dogs and have great potential.

      This tension, tells the dog it's time to get ready to fight- and makes them tense. They react, we pull them away as they react, when we feel we are far enough away, we loosen the leash.

    • @joseechartrand
      @joseechartrand 25 дней назад +15

      Tension on the leaches is the worst thing you can do to try to introduce dogs. As said, it indicates to the dog that he is stronger with his master. You should use long leashes and permit the dog to meet (smelling the rear (butt), etc. For Bruno, à tense leach can really scare him because he can not fly if Herc is agressive. Bruno will only have the choise to fight back. It can become ugly…. You just have to be vigilent to act at any sign of agression. Also, I am sorry to say, but the notion of alpha dog is no more in use. Human is the « alpha » meaning that you herd your dogs the best way you can do so the dogs relie on you. Thank you.

    • @heatherd.9390
      @heatherd.9390 25 дней назад +5

      I agree 100% - it will always create tension in the dog when you have a tight leash. It's like the dramatic music in a horror movie - just waiting for something scary or bad to happen. Shanon had it right to have slack in the leash. Tight leash = tense owner / slack lease = relaxed owner. When Bruno grows up and is the confident boy he's bound to become with good basic obedience on him, it will trigger a dog fight. One day Bruno is just going to say "back off buddy" and if all Herc has ever felt is tension around Bruno (from the leash and his people), it's likely going to be game on.

    Hi Shannon & Kyle,
    Dogs respond to their human's energy. Your energy flows down their leash. Your tension on their lead can give off the sense that you're insecure and that you're not in control of the situation. Pulling back and continuous tension on the lead can make them become an unsure, insecure, and/or leash-reactive dog. The "PRESSURE & RELEASE" technique is the best practice.
    WALKING TIP: If you both have a dog on a short lead? keeping them AT YOUR SIDE. Take both dogs for a walk, the walk should be SWIFT and ideally long enough to wear them both out some. While on the walk they should NOT be allowed to stop, sniff around, or wander freely, no potty breaks, and no marking territory. The walk should be continuously moving forward so they don’t have time to think about each other or who's claiming territories or humans.
    SNIFFING EACHOTHER TIP: At first, butt sniffs shouldn't be any longer than about 3 seconds, then you walk each dog away from the other in an outward circle motion.
    Once they have had a safe and confident introduction, in my opinion, anything outside the goat enclosure should be equal territory for all three dogs. Again, in my opinion,(from my current experience of having 6 dogs), when the goats are out of their enclosure and grazing the property, (overtime)the dogs will typically work TOGETHER as a PACK to protect the animals, humans, and property from unwanted intruders or predators. Each dog will figure out their position amongst the pack on their own. One dog may move forward to confront the threat and the other one may stay back to protect the animals or property. If I were in your position, I wouldn't try to keep a dominant dog outside the goat enclosed. Let them work out the dominance or top dog on their own.
    Example: Hercules will likely always be the dominant dog inside the goat enclosure but they may work it out on their own as Bruno being the dominant dog outside the goat enclosure.
    I hope this is understandable and not confusing. I'm only trying to help y'all and the doggers. 🐕‍🦺🐕‍🦺🐕‍🦺🐐 I hope this helps out a little. Keep up the hard work, it shows. Sending hugs to the furanimals and hoomans. ❤

    letting Herc lunge and growl at Bruno isn't a good idea, especially when you're telling him he's OK and petting him which he would interpret as approval and/or encouragement, making him think that's what you want him to do. when he does that call him back to your side and have him sit without touching him. If he's pulling on the leash trying to get closer to Bruno instead of walking him closer make him hold his place. you don't want to give mixed signals which could have disastrous effect.

    • @heatherd.9390
      @heatherd.9390 24 дня назад +1

      Yep, that's how dog fights happen. They have to get the tension out of the leash. Tension in the leash indicates a tense owner and Herc being the bigger of the two (for now, haha), he's thinking it's his job to protect K&S. If the pups are walked together with slack in the leash and lots of praise and high value treats, they'll come to learn that the leash is a good thing, not a source of confusion and tension.

      My daughter trains dogs for a living and I have learned a lot from her despite having dogs all my adult life. I couldn't agree more with this! Just because Herc was there first, doesn't mean he gets to get away with things. He needs to be trained as Shanon is doing with Bruno. Basic obedience is necessary and only fair to Herc. 'Leave it' is one of the best commands you can teach a dog.
      Also, it is incorrect to keep tension on a leash. You want the leash loose and slack. Tension teaches the dog that they are on guard, or tense. Shanon was right to have Bruno sitting with slack in the leash - that's what you want. You have to get Herc to listen to you on leash and having tension in the leash is telling the dog to be tense and they don't know why or what the 'risk' is. It confuses them. If he were to meet Bruno with a relaxed leash, he'd be more relaxed.

      Right!? He's doing great! I was impressed by that too, especially when you get a puppy so young. They haven't learned much from their mom and siblings. Plus it's easy to coddle them and not put those basic commands on them. He's a smart little guy and will have a much happier life knowing what the expectations and boundaries are. Shanon is doing a fantastic job with the lil (soon-to-be big) guy!

    Having the goats out while trying to get the dogs together is a mistake. Hercs job is to protect the goats, first and foremost. Bruno is the enemy. The best way to get them together is to walk them together without the goats. let them smell each other, walk them closer and closer as their confidence with each other grows. Keep the goats completely out of the training, its whats best.

    Kyle not sure you seen my comment on training on your last video. When hurk wigs his tail its not friendly. ,hes licking his lips while means anxious . you actually told hurk it was OK to go for the pup ,you even prised him with a pat for it without realising you did it .. use strong voice tell hurk no . He needs know attacking, growling or anything likethat towards.the pup isn't acceptable.. using food treats to get the dogs to force on you.itll help to keep both dogs calm, listening and watching you instead of him planning an attack.. tip for food treats use something they will love like sausage. It's to give them a taste and to fill them so cut up small

    The mounting by Herc is reinforcing his dominance over the goats, letting them know that he, not Bruno, is in charge.
    From having bred and raised dogs, I wish you would have gotten the dogs together sooner. Bruno would have learned much earlier that Herc was in charge and Herc would not have felt challenged by Bruno when he was much smaller. We introduced our adult male to the puppies at 3 to 4 weeks, supervised, of course. By 6 weeks, adult was running around with the puppies and putting them in their places while playing with them.

    • @Og-Judy
      @Og-Judy 25 дней назад +4

      Dog , "mounting" a goat like that is actually something should be reprimanded. LGD job is to protect a herd from PREDATORS, like coyote and big cats , NOT "intimidate" with such negative actions. PERIOD. They are designated livestock GUARDIAN dogs, not livestock CHASE dogs. Only livestock need to be herded in that sense is sheep and dairy cattle, not goats. And then more skilled for herding is like Border Collies and Shelties not LGD like Great Pyrs and Anatolian. The place Herc came from does not allow their LGD to be aggressive whatsoever or it is reprimanded. They have other fam dogs. Other goat farms also reprimand LGD being aggressive with goats or other farm animals. The role of an LGD is to chase off PREDATORS not other dogs and livestock. Training starts when It comes home from momma ,as a 6 week old to the actual herd. Not 'some time later' when convenient. Those weeks the puppy is elsewhere without the herd they are intended to guard, fosters confusion as to its role and poor behavior when it is finally placed with a herd. After all it's a working dog looking for its job. Penned up on a porch or in a kennel away from their working herd leads to boredom, lots of negative and wayward behavior that needs to be unlearned in that case. There are right and wrong ways for training. Either work with a pro who knows proper LGD behavior or having an older trained LGD can teach a young puppy "the ropes". Breeds are more or less task specific And owners do make mistakes. Most people wouldn't guard their farms with a golden retriever anymore than taking a Yorkie out in the field duck hunting for these reasons other than having a bunch of chaos. Training requires understanding the dogs actual working purpose and what's proper behavior for the task. A mother dog will quickly show a pup when it's in error in the field. It's always been this way. It is what it is. My uncle's sherperd dog Pete always got the girls in for milking from the pastures , but if he tried runnin through the chickens and ducks that hung with a couple Alpine goats,he got an earful from Molly the Kuvasz LGD they had. She let everyone knew if someone come on the farm. Pete didn't mess with the barn kitties either. They often napped togther.. it was always a great time staying there. Nothing beats "farm fresh" food😁

    Kyle, please watch these things, constant pressure on the leash is not a correction for going after Bruno, but Herc should be "corrected" for doing that. Please watch Dog Daddy Augusto or Cesar Milan Dog Whisperer, because holding that pressure increases and prolongs the tension he's feeling. And telling him he's doing good while in that state of mind is reinforcing the behavior that you don't want. A tail-wag does not always mean happy, safe, or friendly, so don't misunderstand what you're seeing. Also, that retractable leash might be fine under certain circumstances, but you need to use a real leash for these "training sessions". Briskly walking both dogs together on short leashes helps them to socialize with each other while expending their energy. The job of a great dog trainer like the two mentioned above, both on yt, is to train the owners how to train their dogs.
    Shanon would be able to take both leashes and step off on a walk down the driveway and back with no pulling or growling, a nice safe walk with both dogs behaving. Slow walks on your trails will become a possibility quickly if the dogs are started properly leashed and respecting your authority. I implore you to watch the trainers and apply their techniques, because neither of you are strong enough to stop Herc or protect Bruno if things go south the way you're doing it now. I love you guys, and the whole Doss family, and would never want you to suffer a tragedy that is preventable with proper technique and training. You'll be able to walk either dog on a .25-cent leash with two fingers, with their techniques. Just watch and study what they say and do, and you'll be enjoying both dogs together in no time at all. And Herc cannot be the dominant male (alpha) on a leash, on a walk, you are the dominant, the daddy, or Shanon is, not the dog. Herc knows his job while he's working, but he has to yeild to your authority while leashed, and you have to understand how to use your authority. ❤

    Most livestock guardian dogs are trained to never leave the goat enclosure where they know what their constant job is. By letting the goats out into a different area to graze, Herc is still trying to do his job keeping them safe outside that fence, and I'm afraid he sees Bruno as a threat to his goats. Also, I was wondering what is the future role you have for Bruno on the farm? Is he just going to be a pet or is he going to be a guard dog for the property outside the goat area? Either way he needs to feel he has his own safe zone as well as the other animals who have theirs. It's going to be a miracle if Herc and Bruno ever get along with the age gap between them and the fact they are both male. Good luck!

Will also make both feel like there is some reason to be on guard around the other dog just saying. My rule when walking our pup on lead and others want their dog to greet her, keep it moving because I take clues from the handler. Always have lack leash, gives you more leverage when needed.

    Kyle, Herc doesn't see Bruno as a threat, he is just asserting his dominance. Dogs are pack animals by nature. BUT everybody has to earn their place in the pack. Most K9 packs are female dominant, meaning the "leader" will 9 times out of 10 be a female. Once Bruno is neutered it will level out a bit. Right now I have 6, 4 females, 2 males. The girls are dominant and it is fluid they switch up often as to who is the boss. I can't remember the last time I only had 1 dog. LOL We also have 3 inside cats and everybody gets along. The biggest thing you have to remember is that you and Shannon are the Alphas and then the dogs come next. The mounting is also a dominance thing. He is just reminding them who he is.

      I think if Herc is an LGD for goats he should remain in the goat pen. He can’t be a pet as well as an LGD. No other channel lets their LGD out of the goat enclosure. You can still love on him. In the pen.

      The master communicates with the dog through the leash to a neck collar. Pulling on it in such a way as to damage vocal cords is not a proper technique. And neither is using a harness for training. I don't object to using harnesses, but they are not for training and teaching commands, and proper walking. They have their purpose, but that is not what is needed for what they are doing right now.
