Kent, you disprove the old saying, "Those that can't play... teach." You do both so extremely well my friend! I remember when this request was made and thank you for following up on their request. You prove, a good player can jazz up any song with great effect. Actually, you are the answer to a prayer for me. All of your lessons and information are so useful and taught so logically and enjoyably. Please know, all of your efforts are appreciated very much! WOW! This amazing, as a pianist at Von Maur, I can use this technique when children pass by and watch me play. I often start with Twinkle Twinkle and then go into What A Wonderful World when children stop by to listen. The melody stays the same, so I could probably apply these chords with What A Wonderful World. Thanks for the video and tutorial Kent Hewitt!

All this is like Chinese to me, and I do have a musical background. This is easy 5-10 years of hard, everyday work (piano practice) to fully understand the theory behind the chords and to be able fluently play them and apply these formulae to other songs. I've seen about a dozen videos of yours, you've certainly got my respect. You can tell when someone is doing it for the sake of forwarding knowledge, and that is why I just bought your book. Well deserved.

A SUBSCRIBER'S BOOK ENDORSEMENT - "Mootrevo" just wanted to do a shout-out for your book; People, I’ve been using Kent’s book every day for over a year, and it’s a work of art. If you like Kent’s playing and the way he explains jazz and music harmony, and the songs he chooses as examples... then RUN, don’t walk to Kent’s website and get this book. He IS far too modest about this amazing jazz workbook he has created. It is simply the best I have ever used, and I’ve tried a lot of them. It has improved my playing and understanding of jazz theory tremendously. I can’t imagine any student of jazz piano and/or jazz harmonic theory not liking this book. It’s simply that good. It’s fun. It’s straight forward. And unlike so many other jazz books, it’s not boring!! (sorry for the immodesty, if you want my book, but can't afford it, write to me for special price ...KH).

+Kent Hewitt Yes, to me this is the magic of jazz, the highest evolution when you can take anything and jazzify it to bring it to life. I was learning altetered chords and they just sounded horrible to my classical ear. No matter what I did, they did not sound like the nice jazz chords I was trying to copy. so I played them over and over again for months... then they started to sound right. I could hear something in them and now i understand their sound better. I have a long way to go in jazz, but with your help I can do it. Thanks again. :-)

The amount of talent you have is unbelievable. I stumbled upon this late last night and could not believe what I'd been missing. I've been trying to build my skills as a jazz musician (I'm a jazz choir kind of guy who's been trying to become some what competent at jazz on the piano), and your video was just so well done, so helpful, and so inspirational - I've learned so much and I can only dream to be half as good as you. Thanks!

Kent, I so enjoy my visits to this site. They put a smile on my face because you make me believe that I, with a little work, can achieve that level of competence. And even if I can't, you make it fun just to try. Another terrific video. We all have you and the surgery in our thoughts.

Although I didn't really get anything beyond the second step, this was the sickest tutorial I've ever watched. What a great idea to demonstrate all of the techniques on the simplest of songs and progress further step by step, and so well thought out and eloquently at that. Keep on doing what you are doing, this is amazing stuff!

Hey 31337air....You're a hip dude because I use the same word : "sickest" to describe something that no other word expresses better. Your analysis of what I'm trying to do is "right on", and so you are a true brother. Please write to me.!

I learned so much in this video and understood them completely, especially the triton substitutions, rootless voicings, and jazz phrasing, they were my favorite. Hey Kent. Stumbled across your video when looking at something completely different. I play Irish traditional folk music on fiddle now, but used to play real basic jazz stuff years ago on the piano... I wasn't great. What a beautiful evolution of harmonies. I wonder: can it get any more 'modern' or should we start moving to sparse and open minimalistic shapes that retain the modern jazz sound's essence.

    • @KentHewittpiano88

We can go more modern or minimalist. I tried to show the basics in this and make it practical...I needed more... less advanced material.
