  • We were NOT looking to buy a house, our little condo was a great place to live. A good friend let me know a house was for sale at Lynden Airport. I mentioned my friend’s text to my wife the following morning and she responded pretty positively that we should at least look at it. We viewed the house later that day and we had an accepted offer within 24 hours of my friend’s text - WOW! Now we had to sell the condo and move!!

      @@jiggyjay9757 I know the feeling! One thing I didn’t realize before living here was the number of “inspection” passes we get each day. It’s not uncommon to have an airplane that’s just flying overhead to somewhere else decide to drop down and have a closer look at the field. We love it, especially the sound, it does look like they’re going to scrape the shingles off your roof sometimes, though!! 😉👍

      Thanks Jay, really appreciate it! We’ve known people here on the airport for years and I was always hoping for an opportunity to live here. Hangar home prices have gone crazy and we honestly thought we’d been passed by, I was surprised to find this house. Sometimes the true answer is hidden behind what you can see, we’re so happy here at the airport and in town. Lynden is a wonderful community with great people (as I’m sure you know), we still can’t quite believe we’re here!! Thanks for watching, I’ll have more Lynden Airpark stories to share in the future!! 👍✈️🍀

      Hi Sam, from Australia? Wow!! Thanks for watching and welcome to Ginger’s channel. The common arrival and departure profile has aircraft arriving from the west and departing back out to the west where it’s mostly farms and pastureland. Winds sometimes dictate arrivals on runway 26 to the west above the neighboring homes, we try to stay high and quiet out of respect for our neighbors and as an added measure of safety. If the unthinkable were to happen there’s a huge sports field and golf course located to the north to set down in. I’m happy to say this airport has an excellent safety record, no off airfield landings or on field incidents resulting in injury or property damage. Very nice small residential airport with an awesome price on gas. But don't be blinded by the cheap gas. Rwy 26 was one of the hardest landings I've done. First-timers must land on Rwy 08, especially at night. However, Rwy 08 has its own obstacles too. The left pattern will encounter Class D airspace 0.5 miles up north. Your downwind has to be very tight! Be careful!
    PS
    If anybody really wants to land here for cheap gas, just fly 10 minutes up across the border. Canadian gas is half of the US gas price.

    • @GingerThePlane
      @GingerThePlane  6 месяцев назад +1

      The more you fly here the more comfortable you will be, the visuals on 26 take longer to get used to for sure. The Abbotsford airspace is at the outer edges of runway 08’s left downwind, flying the road north of the field helps folks stay south of this and fly a tidy pattern. As for the fuel being cheaper in Canada, the price is in liters and the exchange rate makes it a lot more expensive - plus there’s Customs… C’mon back sometime, you’re always welcome in Lynden 👍

    What are the policies there on night takeoffs/landings? Especially late night? (I do enjoy night flying a lot :-) But so close to houses full of sleeping occupants...) And I know it can get super windy where I station in Skagit. So the narrow runway with some ditches and houses so close had me a little (irrationally probably) nervous when I checked Lynden out. :-) I imagine the houses so close cut down on that a bit when actually over the threshold. But in general, how is it typically there? And any other thoughts on it? I've considered stationing my plane there for the available hangar space and fuel prices. :-)

    • @GingerThePlane
      @GingerThePlane  Год назад

      Great questions! Lynden is a public use airport with a beacon, landing and taxi lighting, and a PAPI so night landings are available if needed. That said, most of the airport and neighboring residents are fast asleep after 10, winter night landings are much more friendly to everyone (because it gets dark earlier). Northeast winds are most common here, they settle down a little bit when down at the runway level, approach from the west on 8 is preferred for no homes below and a clear path to the runway. Depart westerly on 26, less homes to fly over during climb and no invisible trees to worry about. Hangars here are as precious as they are everywhere else, I’m on the waiting list myself. Lynden is a wonderful place to base if you’re within 30 min of the field, otherwise BLI is a better option. If you come up please let me know, I’ll pop over to the pumps to say hello 👋 👍👍

    The whole point of owning/living at an airpark is to Have the hangar attached to the house and the avoidance of hassles associated with rental hangars.

      Hi Gwen, ideally yes, you’re correct. In our case it was a lack of availability and affordability. The 1 or 2 homes that may come up for sale every 5 or 6 years were beyond our price point and the chance to live here now meant being 1 house away. We’re happy with our choice. 👍✈️

      There’s a larger airport to the south that’s better suited to training and touch & go’s. We’re surrounded by neighborhoods that aren’t used to lots of training flights, we try hard to strike that balance and not wear out our local support for the airport. 😉

I love how calm the air gets and the colors in the sky are indescribably beautiful. I plan to film a flight or two like that, I’ve tried to capture them in the past but the conditions weren’t right, I’m determined to capture that moment. Hope that will be something I can share with you and others. 👍

    Living the dream! I'm looking to move back to WA this year to settle down. One of the homes at an air park like Apex would be awesome, but probably isn't necessary for me. I'm a helicopter pilot, so anything with enough room to drop in + a little extra for "oh shit" moments would likely suffice 😂

    • @GingerThePlane
      @GingerThePlane  Год назад

      An airpark is much more than a runway and hangars, in my opinion it’s the community of pilots and aviation minded people that make it truly special. You could, of course, buy a rural homestead and carve out enough room for a landing area with a hangar nearby. Either way definitely do it, now that we’re here my only regret is not doing this sooner!! 👍👍

      Hi Evan, yes you can, the Abbotsford airspace shelf is just north of Lynden and pilots flying a left downwind for runway 8 need to watch their distance or run afoul of Abbotsford ATC. Also, we’re under the CYXX runway 19 departure so a lot of great sounding aircraft pass overhead. Love living here, aviation is all around and the local piloting community is wonderful!!

    Is that really " ready for take off" in the U.S? Here in Germany it's " ready for departure"!

    • @GingerThePlane
      @GingerThePlane  Год назад

      The way ATC calls were explained to me is “departure” is associated more with IFR clearances, whereas a VFR flight is “cleared for takeoff, runway xx”. My flights are all VFR and I use “ready for takeoff”, though if you watch other flying videos you will certainly hear variations including “departure”, “ready to go”, etc. At non-towered fields I often announce “entering runway xx for immediate departure to the (direction of flight)”, if I said taking off that might not be understood by landing traffic. Is departure used at large and small airports in Germany? Meine Frau ist Deutsche aus Köln, we visit often and I’ve always wanted to fly there. Many thanks!

      Hi John, Ginger is currently based 30 minutes to the south at Bellingham International. I have a really nice hangar there, I’m on the waitlist for a Lynden hangar that will be literally 2 min from my back door. We knew there would be a wait and I’m absolutely ok with that, it’s one of the concessions we made to have an affordable home so close to the runway. I’m planning to provide future updates when Ginger is finally located at Lynden Airport, including a hangar tour and some more information about this airport and the airpark community. 👍👍

    But what if your neighbour is really bad at crosswind landings? Do you go out until they have landed?

    • @GingerThePlane
      @GingerThePlane  Месяц назад +1

      No, the people who live here and fly from this runway are all skillful competent pilots with a lot of experience. The airport is intimidating to less experienced pilots so that tends to keep things safer automatically but we encourage people who want to come here to focus on their energy management and centerline training.

    • @GingerThePlane
      @GingerThePlane  Год назад

      Hi Joe, thanks for watching and welcome to Ginger’s channel! Editing often omits some details, in this case ATC had just provided a Citation jet in front of me with winds on their departure. I’m sure he would have given them to me too if needed but it was a fairly calm day and I’m a “regular” so he knew I just wanted to get out of there 😉 Speaking of Canadians, the BLI airspace is actually managed by Victoria Approach, a Nav Canada entity. BLI doesn’t have radar so instrument approaches and all commercial traffic at this US class D airport are handled by a foreign government - crazy, huh?!

      Hi Brennan, great question! Ginger wasn’t happy that morning, I generally don’t pump the throttle more than once (she’s carbureted, not fuel injected) but that day 2 was needed. The carburetor was rebuilt in the next annual and she starts perfectly now with one pump. I’m sure a lot of pilots found than non-standard. 👍👍
