Regulars of French Battle Order videos may notice that the NCO ranks here are different from the infantry video from 2 months ago : that's because the French army has traditionaly been divided since the monarchy era between "armes de pied" ("corps of foot") and "armes montées" ("corps of horse").
That means that the infantry, engineering, light army aviation (helicopters) and signal corps as well as the Legion are "foot corps" : they have regular ranks with yellow/gold insignia, are organized into companies and sections etc. the usual
However the cavalry, logistics, materiel corps as well as the gendarmerie are considered "horse corps", with different rank names reminiscent of old times cavalry (brigadier, maréchal des logis), white/silver insignia, are organized into squadrons and platoons, have smaller square-shaped standards rather than big rectangular flags, and many other differences in terms of terminology, appearance and traditions.
The artillery corps is technicaly "horse" (since canons used to be horse-drawn, same reason why logistics and materiel are "horse") and shares some stuff with the other "horse" corps, but they have "foot" style ranks and some artillery-specific terms, like batteries instead of squadrons or companies. The Chasseurs (light, mountain and parachute infantry) are the reverse : they are infantry and thus "foot" but have "horse" ranks, because they were originaly mixed skirmishing units with both infantry and cavalry.

    • @louisgangloff
      @louisgangloff Месяц назад +29

Everything you say is right except a little think, there is two criterias : in one hand the "armes à pieds" use the terms "sergent" et "caporal", the "armes montées" use "maréchal des logis" et "brigadier" ; and in other hand the heavy units use yellow galons, the light units use white galons. That explain why chasseur use white galons with "sergent" ... *in most cases* because we love exceptions to the rules in France.

@@lilianbeck9349 In training, and of course in ops, mixed structures are the rule, a combat company group will be either infantry or cavalry based with attachments and detachmrnt from other arms, eg 3 inf platoons with company HQ reinforced by a cavalry platoon, an engineer squad at least, fire support team (generally from artillery). Same principle at the battalion and brigade level. Part of the company commander course is knowledge of other arms capabilities and limitations.

Fun bit, the gendarmerie use yellow ranks for it's riot unit and the republican guard. And because nothing can be simple:
-adjudant are using the oposite color or their corps, chief adjudant use the right color. Good luck sorting them out once in a army that use both ranks.
-the trick is to look at the colors of the grenade on the shoulder ranks. If they match, it's a chief adjudant, if not, it's an adjudant.
-there are actually two sub division of the gendarmerie that doesn't wear the grenade on the shoulder insigna
-pretty much no one use shoulder rank insigna and instead favor a chest velcro patch rank, which is simplified
-the single chevron NCO rank which is used as a cadet NCO in the rest of the army is used as a full fledged rank for NCO with less than four years of service
-one single chevron or two chevron indicate not a maréchal des logis, but a gendarme.
-however, if a gendarme has white ranks insigna and grenade on the shoulder, then it mean they are part of the support corps and thus are maréchal des logis
-if a gendarme has a single white chevron but on a blue shoulder rank insigna, he is a maréchal des logis, but not an NCO, since he is actually a deputy gendarme, so a rank and file, but the highest of them.
-remember that no one use the shoulder rank insigna and use the chest velcro. There is litteraly no way to distinguish an NCO with a single chevron from deputy gendarme maréchal des logis with a single chevron.
-There is finally a raging debate about how the chief brigadier rank is supposed to be worn on the chest velcro. Blue-blue-white or white-blue-blue.
Finally, the legion use green chevron for it's private and corporal ranks.

Exact, the french armed forces have quality stuffs, but at a tiny scale. Only 200 main battle tanks to protect 543 000 square kilometers and 67 millions peoples is vastly insufficient. the minimum would be 1 tank pers 1000 square kilometer = 543 units minimum.

The French very often introduced new ways of waging war. Everyone made fun of the AMX 10RC which was a tank on wheels, in the end it was the one which most proved its effectiveness in light combat. They also invented the CAESAR, a rapid wheeled howitzer for maneuver firing. Even their “revised” older generation vehicles compete with the most modern ones because they are very efficient. France is the second largest exporter of military weapons, not for nothing.

The Jaguar armament is top notch IMO. The 40mm CTA cannon is very flexible since it can shoot programmable ammo and makes it capable of facing infantry, drones, small structures and light vehicles, whil you can still us APFSDS for medium AFVs. The akeron is a terryfing anti tank missile and to be hones pairing it with a drone means that you could win a battle against two MBTs without ever entering their line of sight. In oother words you can do a bit of everything.

As we have seen in Ukraine - an autocannon can deal serious damage even to a MBT.
It might not destroy it totally and kill the crew - but without sensors, optics or radios - a modern MBT isn't much more than a very, very heavy paperweight.
And that Bradley Bushmaster in Ukraine was "only" 25mm. 40mm is a whole different ball game - with significantly bigger payload.

    • @neitherman9997

It kinda feels like they took the idea of the M3A2 Bradley CFV, removed the dismount capacity, made it french (trackless and lower armor. Not actually lighter funnily enough) and put every possible modern sensor in it.
A potent autocannon, combined with a good ATGM. But with all the sensor capabilities of the modern day and a ridiculously high top speed. The perfect evolution of the armored recon concept.
Also the return of the cannon-missile pairing in the french army. Took us long enough

do not criticize the JAGUAR, the fact that it is on wheels makes it faster, more maneuverable, cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, a destroyed track and the vehicle is blocked than the combat zone, a destroyed tire, the JAGUAR still rolls!! it is not a discounted cannon, it pierces at 1500 meters = 142 mm of steel, or almost all Russian BMP type armored vehicles, at 1000 meters, it pierces 152 mm of steel, or the capacity to destroy the tracks or the barrel of the cannon, or to damage all the sighting devices! there are a lot of modes with cannon, in addition to the armor piercing, it can pierce a reinforced concrete wall of 20 cm and explode behind, it can explode above a trench or a wall and kill all those hiding in it by shrapnel! it has an elevation of more than 60 ° which allows it to shoot at planes, helicopters, drones or missiles, each shell is programmed just before being fired, either in armor-piercing mode or in shrapnel! in addition, the JAGUAR has high precision, 60 shells per minute in ultra-precise mode, and 200 in less precise mode in order to stur the shooting target! and its 4 AKERON MP missiles can destroy 4 heavy tanks! the JAGUAR can roll on a flat hillside, it can lower itself completely to leave only its turret exposed, it is protected against mines or ied in order to protect the crews! effective range 4000 meters

They would be troop warrant officers in the armoured corps, platoon warrant officers in the infantry, and squadron warrants in the artillery.
