As someone who has lost to Phrike as he was close to death several times, this game just kind of stops being fun if you're stuck in the first biome for hours and hours, because there are only 3 weapons, and very minor and near meaningless upgrades. Other games do a better job of giving you a lot of variance in tools. At some point I've seen all the rooms and used the 3 weapons. Comically, people kept recommending using weapons I had no access to to beat Phrike and I'm like. Uh, hello? Anyway, I have downloaded the game for the third time, and lost to Phrike yet again at the end, and I just don't care. I've seen all the tiles, I'm getting no story over 12+ hours, it's just not fun for me to continue to play. Not because of the difficulty. But because at this point I'm bored. They could have done a much better job at showing what the game offers.
I finally started playing this game yesterday and so far, not having a lot of fun. Going to try it a bit more but a game shouldn’t be this difficult if it is also trying to tell a story. The story should be the main focus and we the player should be able to choose how challenging we want the game to be.
I defeated the 4th boss, Hyperion, in one go without dying so in terms difficulty, it's challenging but fine. My problem with the game is that it has horrible design flaws that make it repetitive and tedious.
@@donnymiddlebrook Took me about 30 tries to get through the first Biome, but it gets easier after that every other biome was then 1 or 2 tries with the exception of the 3rd biome (Which was more down to the new enemies, not the boss). So stick with it! My advice for biome 1 is:- -Try to do all the side rooms including the optional challenge room you should end up with heaps of obolites to stock up at the fabricator shop and a half decent weapon -Do not be afraid to take a risk on malignent items, remember you can have 2 malfunctions before the 3rd makes a critical malfunction - Some times the reward is worth the risk as some malfunctions are easily fixed or circumvented for example suffer damage from long falls, just dash before you hit the ground and you won't take any damage. -Get comfortable with each weapon to avoid being over reliant on one particular weapon. Make sure you know each weapons strengths, and weaknesses for example good at dealing with a crowd, or close range only, or long distance weapon for example. -If you feel like a run is not going well, pause and restart the cycle, I would not face the boss unless I had decent health, some good items and consumables. -Learn enemies attacks and how you can avoid them. This means enemies in biome one from the low level bats, all the way to the boss you need to learn their attacks and how to dodge/when to dash otherwise your health will quickly deplete when playing and your frustration will build. -watch Boomstick gamings video on getting overpowered at the very start and try to implement his tips -Good luck
personaly for me who loves rogue like games i the difficulty is ok for anybody wondering its a rogue game so exspect to die then back to the start its no different to any other rogue game out besides difficulty so before u leave hate look up the game before u buy
The RNG is the hardest part of the game. Sometimes you’re a tank and others you’re running around with a plastic spoon. Not into it to be honest. Sekiro and Dark Souls are all about molding your builds to your liking. So while hard, there are ways to make it easier. Returnal, to me, isn’t fun, because you’re not creating your build. You’re just hoping for good drops. And then you have to start at the ship and not even the level you died on. Was hoping I’d enjoy it more.
Then again, that appeals to different people because it forces you to work with what you have available. You have to play around with different builds and you’ll find out that there is no actually bad build as different biomes will need different weapons, items, and consumables, etc.
Exactly, and a lot of it is luck because of the unknown malfunctions you get in crates or malignant objects. People defending it saying "muhhh, it's rogue-like, they're supposed to be that way" - no, they're not. This game has very specific designs which are unique to this game. Is it enjoyable? Well, the combat and visuals are fantastic, but it does have horrible design flaws that unfortunately make it repetitive and tedious. I'd give it 7/10.
Same bro, and i played alot of hard games before, i finished Sifu before the update of the difficulties and it was hard but it's nothing compared to this game
It's up there, but not the hardest for me in terms of challenges. The hardest I've done is getting the "messiah" achievement on Outlast 2 (completing the game on hardest difficulty without dying, only using one battery). Returnal is an excellent game in terms of combat and visuals, but unfortunately it has horrible design flaws that make it repetitive and tedious.
Just don't waste your time. The endings are beyond anticlimactic. And your success depends souly on how good your luck is with weapon and item drops. As for boss fights you die you have to start all over before your ready to face it again. Overall a boring and not at all fun!
It is most of the time too hard get in good shape or strong enough to fight the Boss. It is hard to pratice with this fight if I can only get to it with random luck . Maybe the devs should patch an easy mode for the noobs ... none in my friends list could get to act 2 yet. Some will not play Returnal ever again. The game is fun but it is just not well balanced...
I've been playing almost 2 months straight and I can't get past the first Biome. I enjoyed the game at first. But now it is just frustrating as hell. I will never play another Housemarque game because of this.
I played so many times just for the first boss and when finally move to other level, im on another level without knowing it, because im hard to kill...well almost
Soulsborne games are MILES easier and anyone saying otherwise factually does NOT understand gaming. You can over level via farming on those games and make any boss fight fairly easy. You can also team up online and have your handheld through a fight where you barely do anything. Added to the above there are many ways to cheese bosses, be it with bows or magic. Returnal is a hardcore game that most gamers wont be able to play. Are there harder games? Yes! Are there more punishing games? A few. Cuphead is much harder, but Cuphead is nowhere near as punishing, because dying doesn't put you back many hours. Ghosts and Goblins and classic coin-ops are harder, but for a home release, this is one of the most punishing games that anyone can play. As with Cuphead and old coin-ops there aren't really simple easy ways to cheese or over level like the Soulsborne games. You cannot do bow or magic cheese. You cannot team up and be carried. And it is not just the boss fights, some individual single rooms can completely crush a run. If you have bad RNG on the very first level and walk into a room that locks behind you, and it has a green monolith that regens all enemy health, and the same room has flies with lasers and the green rotting dudes and no stairs to quickly reach the monolith - you aint getting out alive, or if you do, your run is likely wrecked anyway. Some runs leave you very over powered too, it just depends. I always taken on lots of parasites and as early in a run as possible, especially protective defensive ones and I always buy the astro figurine or get the parasite extra life, also I always buy the extra health and I always take malignant resins as they don't often harm you. Leave the malignant keys though, those chests are shit and they always give you malignancy. Anyway, the game is punnishingly hard and anyone trying to say other is putting their ego into the mix. P.S Either the video creator here is lying about not dying on any boss fight, or they absolutely are doing the whole false humility/false humble BS. Only absolute hardcore gamers and those extremely familiar and good at bullet hell and boss fights will manage this. The first biome is the hardest and especially so when you start out as you have so few items permanently unlocked. The fog also covers some nasty drops/fall damage and it can be hard to see. It gets easier in many regards, the second level is miles easier than the first and you can properly see where you are going. The hardest boss is at the end of level 2.
I don't think he's lying about not dying on bosses. I died heaps I'm biom 1 and against phrinke, but once in racked that and cracked the mechanics of the game I best every other boss without dying and got through the rest of the bioms without too much problems except in biom 4 and 5. Once you find the weapons you like, unlock the traits and get that grapple hook to monkey around it becomes really fun. Not saying it isn't hard however, I'm still on edge every moment of the game knowing death could be round the corner, but always try snag a spare life so I can play more aggressive.
@@mitchellstott8620 - Then he is going in for false humility BS. It is not an easy game, not by any measure and bad rng can fuck up any given run, especially if you don't have a hard and fast policy as to when to not push your luck. Also as stated, anyone saying this game is easier than any of the Soulsbourne games is either stupid/lying, or hasn't played each to completion.
Thanks for the detailed comment and not just some bullshit e-peen ego boosting like a lot of the others on here, was gonna pick this up on the psn sale but I'll give it a miss. I ain't got it in me to suffer through a game anymore, frustration ain't the same as fun to me.
It's not that they're 'easier' it's that they're fair, in souls games if you get killed, it was 100% your fault, gameplay is flawless. Returnal in the other hand, you spawn, if the first randomnized areas screw you over because too many enemies and no good upgrades/weapons, you're screwed... Becomes really annoying when you've to play the entire biome just to get to the final boss with a randomnized setup and health
@@SrNavi155 - You obviously didn't read far enough into my comment, as you have replied with a partial regurgitation of literally my prior stated opinion, as though it a contradiction of my prior words. What you said IS true, but it was true when I said it originally, in the second half of my comment above. Also YES, the Soulsborne game ARE also FACTUALLY MILES EASIER, and YES that actually matters - as this is what most people take issue with overall. To be crystal clear here, the Soulsborne games are OBJECTIVELY MILES EASIER and Returnal is also MILES more UNFAIRLY punishing - BOTH are true, they are not mutually exclusive/separate issues, to suggest otherwise is a false dichotomy fallacy. P.S Advice: Read ALL of what is written before attempting to correct someone in future, otherwise you can end up offering back to people their own opinions as though it something new. None of my friends even played it cause they cant stand this game, and of those who biy the game almost half never finished it and gave up....so easy my ass
Yes it is too hard. When you have to spend 25 minutes just trying to get to the first boss, and with a terrible weapon because the only other one available in that cycle is a shotgun, just...why? Why not have an adjustable level so that all types of players can enjoy? The story is very intriguing, not to mention the graphics and the vibrating controller, but...I don't know. At this point, I'm willing to pay someone to get on to my account so that I can get to the second biome
Honestly as an older person with a full time job, unless you're really fucking good this game will drain hours of your day with almost nothing to show for it. There are very few permanent unlocks or weapons at the start. Had it been easy at the start and get progressively more difficult I'd say this game was amazing. However it's poorly balanced, and for anything to seem even remotely worthwhile you have to actually complete the damn biomes you're in. Not saying this isn't a fun game; it is. But it's annoying.. and there are way too many games I wanna sink my teeth in to spend countless hours getting good at one. I had more fun with Dark Souls and Elden Ring than this game.
My friend I had been stuck on biome 3 for 3 days and was convinced I would never reach biome 4. I know how it feels like. I know how it feels to lose hours of progress to the stupid drones, automations and Nemesis. But please don't give up. It's an amazing game and if you beat biome 3 you get a checkpoint. Run through biome 1 and 2 quickly to get extra integrity and a good weapon and skip through all the enemies of biome 3 if you have already reached the boss. Keep going and never stop moving when fighting Nemesis. With enough dedication and a little bit of luck you will finish it.
Here a tip, enter Biome 3 via Biome 2…Not from biome 1 to 3. You enter Biome 3 in a way easier spot and if pick up some nice power up in Biome 2. I had the same problem

Returnal is the best kind of hard,it isn't hard cuz it makes you slughish or have stamina so you can't move after 2 dodges...like shit soul's 😅that game isn't even hard, it's just artificially hard to waste your time and make you feel that you've acomplished something where you just learned the few moves that the crapy boss does after 10 hours of your life that went down the drain😅the proof of the difference is that once i learned the game i died like 4 times in 20 hours of in game time, and beated the game 3 times from start to finish, damn that's a real good game
Honestly this game is great, I beat it with 47 deaths (all those deaths were in act 1) act 2 was a breeze to be honest. The hardest boss in my opinion is the 3rd one because of all the projectiles and platforming
Nemesis was a toughy, but once you figure out the (very specific) solution to surviving, it's pretty straightforward. Easiest boss for me was the 4th one, Hyperion, which I defeated in one go without dying or using an Astronaut Figurine.

@@J.F.331 honestly play it till the Hyperion boss (one with the organ) and the game will reward you because that boss theme is so fucking good
@@Zamu273how the fuck can you play till that boss if you keep dying did you not read the man’s comment?
46 year old gamer here, difficulty about right imo. 6 biomes done after a few weeks.
I just love This Game! 😍 I just cant stop.
Same…..I cut my teeth on contra and battletoads…so this was par for the course. Maybe 40 hours.
I defeated the 4th boss, Hyperion, in one go without dying so in terms difficulty, it's challenging but fine. My problem with the game is that it has horrible design flaws that make it repetitive and tedious.
i'm 50, can. you help me get through the first Biome! lol
@@donnymiddlebrook Took me about 30 tries to get through the first Biome, but it gets easier after that every other biome was then 1 or 2 tries with the exception of the 3rd biome (Which was more down to the new enemies, not the boss). So stick with it! My advice for biome 1 is:-
-Try to do all the side rooms including the optional challenge room you should end up with heaps of obolites to stock up at the fabricator shop and a half decent weapon
-Do not be afraid to take a risk on malignent items, remember you can have 2 malfunctions before the 3rd makes a critical malfunction
- Some times the reward is worth the risk as some malfunctions are easily fixed or circumvented for example suffer damage from long falls, just dash before you hit the ground and you won't take any damage.
-watch Boomstick gamings video on getting overpowered at the very start and try to implement his tips
-Good luck
personaly for me who loves rogue like games i the difficulty is ok for anybody wondering its a rogue game so exspect to die then back to the start its no different to any other rogue game out besides difficulty so before u leave hate look up the game before u buy
Kinda the game point.your returning to the planet with your pistol... your only chance is finding a weapon.
To me thats the best part. I love the gambling mechanics and the risk reward. The fast paced action is 2nd to none with tension that slices you up.
I broke my ps5 controller after my second boss fight death i am now playing rachet and clack to make me feel less shit at gaming 😭
I'm seriously Death 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅 FML 😂😂😂😂😂hahahahahaja lol
It’s not being shit at a game the devs just made a game that is too much for most gamers
Hardest game I've played easily.
11 hours 25 deaths, 2 deaths at first boss. £70 for one level of a game :D
you can do it!
255 deaths 78 first boss deaths and 45 hours put in lmao I think I’m out
@@CulturedVultures Hmm, Mass Effect almost here.
@@Woozie87 Wow, can't say you didn't try!
I will never play another Housemarque game because of this.
boohoo loser the game is great it's ur fault
48 yrs old here. I have this game. I'm Awful at it. Really bloody hard
I play games to have fun not to be constantly frustrated, annoyed and pissed off. Think I'll pass on this.
if you don't see the fun in overcoming a challenge, you are likely not a beneficial individual to society.
I would love returnal if it had checkpoints like dark souls
P.S
Either the video creator here is lying about not dying on any boss fight, or they absolutely are doing the whole false humility/false humble BS.
P.S
Advice:
Read ALL of what is written before attempting to correct someone in future, otherwise you can end up offering back to people their own opinions as though it something new.

I have very likely forgotten more about gaming than you will ever know 😉

Those who comment stating with ezzzy, and easy etc better shut up cause this is nowhere easy and the reason why sales are low is cause people mostly don't waste time wirh masochistic games that make your life hell which this one is. Its a grear game under many aspects but it's jot at all for the common player who wants to relax.
Have you reached the second biome yet bro?
The first biome doesn’t funnel you into a un winnable encounter😂😂😂 You can totally beat the first the mini boss encounter. I’ve seen it done.
YES!!!! IT IS TOO HARD!!!
It's annoying.
I finally finish demon souls remake , but I don't think I will finish this game.
took me 100h to play through and another 50h for platinum (on PS5)
Agreed. I play games to have fun not to be constantly frustrated, annoyed and pissed off. Think I'll pass on this.
I can't get past the 3rd biome why!
I had the same problem
i loved this game! finished it with 89 deaths :)
You inspired me to check mine and I have 239 deaths.
But I wonder if it totals the deaths from ALL of my completions?
I have played through nearly 8 times and played the Tower of Sisyphus since the day it was released.
I have 1,000 death too 😅 returnal
Hmm, I was done in about 10 hours, I didn't find it too dificult. Every time I did die felt like I could have avoided it easily. I was dissapointed with how short it was and how easy the bosses were, while they were very fun. wish there were more of them
Returnal is the best kind of hard,it isn't hard cuz it makes you slughish or have stamina so you can't move after 2 dodges...like shit soul's 😅that game isn't even hard, it's just artificially hard to waste your time and make you feel that you've acomplished something where you just learned the few moves that the crapy boss does after 10 hours of your life that went down the drain😅the proof of the difference is that once i learned the game i died like 4 times in 20 hours of in game time, and beated the game 3 times from start to finish, damn that's a real good game
It was hard to me at first...
