Ola Gjeilo with the CWU Chamber Choir: The Ground - In the Moment (3 of 4)

- Опубликовано: 5 июл 2011
- Composer/pianist Ola Gjeilo joins the CWU Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director) in presenting Gjeilo's "The Ground" - featuring the the CWU string faculty members who comprise the Kairos String Quartet.
In mid-April, 2011, Ola spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus for a project in which he joined the choir in recording 3 of his compositions. On this video, Gjeilo accompanies the choir on "The Ground"
He is playing a written accompaniment on this video. He created an improvised accompaniment on the other two videos of this series. One is on his setting of the "Ubi Caritas" text and the other is on his composition, "Northern Lights",
Because of his view that improvising is a wonderful snapshot of artists "at that moment", the project was entitled "In the Moment".
Here are the other "In the Moment" RUclips URL's:

Dona nobis pacem at the end gets me every time.
Working up this piece to accompany a choir in a few months. Listening, I thought, "man, that pianist really gets the affect of this piece." Didn't read until after I listened that the composer was accompanying the piece. At least I now know exactly what he wants with the piece.
Dismayed that now 41 are unhappy with this exquisite music. Not to be critical. Just surprised. And really hope some music will bring joy that cannot be described into their lives.
Am honored to sing bass again this Sunday, for the 4th or 5th time over the last several years. To now sing it without music, like this amazing choir, is very moving, makes us a better presenter of an astonishingly wonderful moment. Feel closer to everyone in the choir, to my family, to those who hear, and frankly, even to those with whom I disagree.
Never grow tired of listening to this.
Nope, me neither...I need it, it feeds me deeply.
A choir's dream! Simply a blessing to sing and feel the various harmonic sounds.
WOW! Flawlessly done! Absolutely beautiful! I love how the "Agnus Dei" simply soars and melts into the "Dona Nobis Pacem." Thank you, Mr. Gjeilo, for your gift of music and bringing it to the world.
Gorgeous! It would take a cold heart indeed to not be inspired by such a beautiful composition and touching performance.
This is definitely the most beautiful choir masterpiece. Just love it so so much!!
Singing this beautiful piece again on Sunday with my wife's choir. She is retiring after 47 years of being organist/choir director to several choirs. Currently she's Organist/Choir Director at St. Joseph Church in Columiba, SC. The Bass 1 section at the Agnus Dei is my absolute favorite part to sing of any anthem we've ever done. The piece is so moving that I truly find it hard to work through emotions to do it some justice! This coming Sunday ... knowing this will be the last time I'll sing under the direction of my beautiful and talented wife ... will make it ever so much harder to do!
Omg Doug ai just read this. How all that turned out to be? How r u both doing now?
I totally feel you, Brother, because my wife is Organist / Choir director as well and I sing under her hands always and love the feeling (this is an account that we both use here at You Tube, I'm sorry I didn't opened one my under my name)
Thanks for sharing @Doug Marks !
The Ground is a wonderful, soothing piece of music. It is performed perfectly by the choir and the Harrington String Quartet. Thank you very much for this beautiful music. Greetings from Switzerland
Absolutely beautiful! There aren't words to describe how much I love this piece...exceptional! A masterpiece...timeless...most beautiful music ever!
"The Ground" is one of my favorite Ola Gjeilo pieces. He is so gifted - musically and spiritually. I only wish the local Christian radio stations would play more of his music.
A person has to have one foot in heaven to write this music. Bravo. Thank you.
What a treat to see the composer conducting this wonderful piece! We have sung it many times in our church choir and I never tire of it. I think it is one of the most beautiful choral pieces ever written. There is so much peace and joy in the words. If you are feeling depressed or worried or unsettled, listen to it a few times. It is sung in Latin but see the translation below.
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory,
Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord,
Blessed is He Who comes,
Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.
Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world,
Grant us peace.
Thank you for the kind words! It was great to be able to work with Ola Gjeilo (the composer, who is at the piano) and the Kairos String Quartet for this recording. This video, as are all the videos of CWU Chamber Choir with Ola Gjeilo in them, is conducted by Dr. Gary Weidenaar, CWU's Director of Choral Studies since 2006.
Thanks fir clarifying!
My college choir is singing this song, and I've loved it from the very first time I heard it. An inspiring piece, and I've shed a tear on more than one occasion listening to this. Marvelous!
I was brought to tears when I heard this piece. I am now teaching it to my choir. It is just exquisite.
Yes, this is one of the most beautiful choral selections ever !
Santiago G. Te sugiero buscar en You tube, al grupo ANTIQUE CORDOVA ENSEMBLE, el videoclip del grupo que dirige mi hijo, quien tuvo el honor que Ola Gjeilo lo felicitara por facebook.
I’ve cried probably 20 times to this and I was just introduced to the piece last week, absolutely beautiful.
EXQUSITE! ...in tears...so beautiful! Thank you!
This is one of my favorites. They sound beautiful.
My granddaughter sang this song in GMEA (All state workshop) in her senior year. They were incredible. Such a beautiful and uplifting creation.
An absolutely amazing performance of a stunning composition. The singers, conductor and composer showing respect for the piece and each other at all times. Love it!
COMPLIMENTI, veramente bravi! Che belle sonorità!!!
There is so much beauty in this piece! It had to have been a great day for the author/composer when he wrote this wonderful work.
I love this man's compositions and this is one of my favorites.
A taste of heaven! My granddaughter along with her District Honor Chorus performed this over the weekend. It was so beautiful it moved me to tears.
First time I rehearsed it I cried!
Que el pianista sea el compositor es un placer añadido. Perfecto el conjunto, la coordinación de la voces del coro , los instrumentos de cuerda y el piano.....
Just beautiful. We sang this at our Deo Gratias summer concert on 20th June and it was very well received. It is a privilege to sing and share such a glorious, inspired piece of music.
Très belle version avec un tempo plein de sensibilité et d'émotion , sous l'oeil attentif et bienveillant du pianiste , Ola Gjeilo
Quelle belle chorale que le C.W.U. ! !
Beautiful performance, bravo to Gary and everyone at CWU, made my morning!
A combination of modern and period music! Just astounding!
Singing this with a spectacular choir for Maundy Thursday tomorrow night. It's absolutely beautiful and so glad I'm getting a chance to sing it.
What a brilliant young man! His music brings me to tears every time.......Lovely execution by CWU with a nice, gentle, smiling conductor.
Wow. This is incredible. Also my choir teacher is singing in this video :)
Outstanding.........absolutely outstanding! Takes me back to the nice things of the past. Need to be on your own to listen to this and reflect. Music such as this brings some justification of our being here .
No words can describe my feelings. Bravo.
An absolut masterpiece! Thanks sir Ola Gjello!
W e w! The low strings in the background pull the soul when they say Peccata at 2:09 🙌🏿
This is wonderful! My daughter also performed this piece with the Wisconsin Lutheran High School A Cappella Choir. (available on RUclips). It moved me way beyond tears. This must be a glimpse of heaven. Such beautiful love in this work. Thank You.
The Most Beautiful Music I have ever heard!
I'm starting to read your mind, Ola...he really is MWWTW and WELL WORTH THE WAIT we all have adventures that are going to test us...call us out of our comfort zones...more reasons we need each other, love one another and help each other up when we stumble or fall.
I can't stop listening to this. It is so beautiful. Gjeilo is a genius.
This morning I got to perform this for a second time with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This is such a beautiful and moving work. It is definitely on my list of favorites. I love the rich texture of the full orchestra setting of this piece.
I was there and saw it live in the Tabernacle. You guys were AMAZING!!! This piece brought me to tears and I can't wait to watch it again on TV next week. Thank you so very much for your work in the choir!
I don't mean to be rude, but I gotta warn you of the false gospel. You can't be saved by your works. They are like filthy rags to God. We can only be saved by grace and by the blood of Jesus Christ. God sent down His Son to die on the cross for us to pay for our sins. Jesus paid the price for us to be able to go to heaven, and He was able to because He never sinned. He was the only one who ever deserved or will ever deserve to enter heaven, but He chose to die on the cross for us so that we could be saved. Then, 3 days later, He rose again, defeating the power of sin and death.
God wants to be able to let us into heaven, but we have to accept the free gift of grace that He has offered to us. God is giving us free choice.
So really, God doesn't have a choice to send us to hell or not. The choice is ours. How we life this life determines where we go after we die. God is good and has provided a way for us to be saved, but He is also just, like a good judge. To be saved, we must admit that we are sinners, repent and turn from our sins, confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that He died on the cross and rose again, and place our trust in Him for your salvation and not yourself. You can be saved right now if you believe and do these things, and you will begin your new life with Jesus, one that lasts forever.
I know this is a lot to take in, so if you have any questions, I'm here.
The piano is beautifully executed! Such passion. Thank you!
Good God. I'm an atheist but the Latin lyrics and key changes just bring tears to my eyes. It's SO beautiful
KKOPPI I think it’s because the music is religious.
I claimed atheism in highschool...then God touched me and revealed Himself to me. I grew up in foster care and when in highschool my foster fam went to church...I HATED church. Haha. When I started thinking about it and really delving deep it was a message of Love and Forgiveness through Jesus and Music that brought Light to me. As an atheist I yelled at my parents 'you can't make me go to church, I don't believe in ….God! Here's the catch though, as an atheist the definition of the word is, in the Greek, no-God. In Greek the a=negative and while there are a plurality of theistic and non-theistic world-views the thing that is unique to the Christian world-view is that God is all-knowing, all-powerful and all-present and Personal. That being said, for me to maintain my atheism would mean that I have all wisdom infinitely that there is NO other being out there with the same. But because I can't be "all-present," everywhere at the same time to prove the non-existence of God, my claim is rendered illogical. Jesus died for our sins that we could be brought back to God. That is the message that changed my life and I pray it does yours! God Bless!
P.s. I would also add that all humanity 'feels,' because they have been created to do so.
I'm not sure if you are still an atheist or not, but I would like to tell you about Jesus anyway.
In the beginning, there was no sin in the world. When God created the world, He gave humans free choice. However, humans chose to disobey and rebel against God, and sin entered the world. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. Because of our sins, we earn spiritual death. God cannot stand sin and he hates it, and because of our sinful nature, none of us deserve to be able to enter heaven because of God's high standard of holiness. But God sent down His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for us to pay for our sins. Jesus paid the price for us to be able to go to heaven, and He was able to because He never sinned. He was the only one who ever deserved or will ever deserve to enter heaven, but He chose to die on the cross for us so that we could be saved. @@klax2129 I'm happy to say that I have changed my ways and have repented and accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior. Through my friends, the Holy Spirit pushed me towards God, and I'm closer with Him than ever before. I was baptized two Sundays ago, and just this last Sunday I became a full member of a new church that I had been attending for several months. I have much Bible reading to do still, but several weeks ago I had planned to continue reading Matthew, but the Holy Spirit pushed me to read the entire book of Psalms in one session, and I found my favorite Bible verse from that. Psalm 116:6 - "The Lord preserves the simple. I was brought low, and He saved me." Moved me to tears and I've never been happier in my life now that I walk with Christ. Thank you for sharing.
If this piece doesn't do something positive to your soul, then nothing will. Exquisite
Amazing song that is performed just perfectly. This is going on my repeat playlist...
Beautiful........ Thank you for bringing this to the world.
Einfach wunderbar! A masterpiece ... Es begleitet mich schon Jahre!
Breathtaking! My choir is doing this piece Sunday. It's a favorite!
Enchanting! It just grasps your emotions in an awesome way!
Heavenly 💖 amazing, stunning, touching, the right conductor for this masterpiece 🎶🎹😇
Preciooooosaaaa, beauuuutifuuuul, we are going to sing it in our choir this Christmas!! yujuuu!!
I've returned to listen to The Ground more than a year later and I'm still moved beyond words. I was lucky enough to get to sing this piece almost 2 years ago in its first ever TTBB arrangement with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. I'm a T2 L and we had the most beautiful part in the score. THANK YOU Ola Gjeilo!
I don't mean to be rude, but I would like you to understand the significance to this song. The Latin lyrics are about Jesus Christ.

@@klax2129 "I" don't mean to be rude, but I'll have you know that I understood the words to The Ground. I learned Latin at the Seminary where I studied to become a priest. I recognize that in all likelihood, you meant no disrespect or harm to me, but your post comes across as condescending and patronizing. I do NOT need any "Sermons From The Mount" to understand the significance of Jesus Christ. If you take offense that I'm gay, may I suggest you take this up with your priest, pastor or God, directly. Judge not, lest ye be judged.
@@QueerAndUnplugged Sorry it came across that way, but I know the Bible does speak against homosexuality, and I just want to warn you.
cudowne wykonanie !!! , super kompozycja !!! great conductor !!!
We Are Singing This For ACSI Musicale This Year. It Is So Beautiful! It'll Be Even Better When We Combine It With 600 Other High School Students At Musicale. One More Week Till Then!!
Großartiges Stück! Mein Kirchenchor liebt es. Es berührt mich jedesmal.
I sang this in the greater phoenix honor choir. This song's amazing! I love it so much. I never knew this song was so recent, but there must have been some quality time put into this... it's magnificent.
Brilliant composition. Simple yet very effective. The piano part adds so much - it is not just an accompaniment. Lovely to see Huggy Bear taking up singing.
shes beautiful!!
Absolutely amazing!
Ola is a great person. He's very down to earth and approachable. He worked with my choir last year and we had a great experience. His girlfriend is also very down to earth and friendly. They make a great looking couple, too.
Interesting to see a younger Ola from 13 years ago
My all time favourite
So beautiful - thanks so much for sharing your superb work. :)
Beautiful beyond words.
¡¡¡¡Impresionante !!!! El compositor Ola Gjeilo es noruego y solo tiene 38 años , un nuevo Mozart
Asi es....
Det var jeg, Bjørg som skrev dette. Skjønner ikke hvorfor Min manns navn dukket opp!
Such deep soul-stirring sound! This rendition honors the composer. Better still is the spuritual lift. As a 2x cancer survivor and 3x heart suurvivor, this is the affirmation I need.
This is beyond AWESOME!!!!!
So pretty, brings tears indeed
Absolutely beautiful, if a bit fast for my tastes (I know, Gjeilo is there, but still). It's a pleasure to listen to the "in the moment" videos. Temple's University Singers did something similar with Gjeilo not too long ago (although I was unfortunately no longer in choir by that point).
Grandissimi
beautiful song..
/// Heaven & earth are full of Your glory, Hosanna, hosanna in the highest...... Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, blessed is He who comes..... Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world -- Grant us peace.
For me, this is the best version on RUclips, and I keep coming back to it. The tempo is perfect, which of course it would be with the composer himself at the piano😊
une prière qui monte au ciel
beautiful.
This is what I listen to when I wish to hear the sound of the first moment of Creation.
Wonderful choir, super conductor!
This is still my favorite recording of this beautiful piece. Hope you are doing well and still directing a wonderful choir and beautiful music.
A decade has passed since this recording. Beautiful!
wonderful!!!!!!
MAGNIFIQUE
Spectacular.
Merci de France.
Like the wind rustling the leaves of trees deep in a dark forest.
Wonderful
best ever.
Musica bellissima
perfect
touching...
nice song. love the high parts!
Holy!
9 people have no feelings!!!
46 have NO feelings. Unbelievable. This piece is magnificent!
If the sirens sang this and lead me to my demise I'd be perfectly ok with that
You are very good and Gjeilo is a truly genius! My choir sang "The Rose" and "Days of Beauty" with new arrangements, both adapting for mixed choir, with male and female voices and making spectacular videos! We were able to reach the same Gjeilo who was thrilled. Write this in the search: you will surely like them!
Corale Novarmonia - Days of Beauty (O. Gjeilo) SATB Choir
Corale Novarmonia - The Rose (O. Gjeilo)
I have a question about the string arrangements. Are these just the voice parts mostly the inner parts made to fill in by this conductor or a separate published orchestral version ? This is a gorgeous performance but strings can really help a small church choir sound fuller since it has divided parts everywhere in the men parts.
check out his northern lights album if you like this :)
+10
Thanks for the correction...wrong assumption on my part. I expected music this amazing to come from someone older.
The violinist center-left is really cute.
