I love the last lines of the screenplay regarding Dani. “A smile finally breaks onto Dani’s face. She has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful.”
“What is that?! Is that coochie?! Is THAT coochie??!” 😂😂😂 The boyfriend drunk menstrual blood, and had the pubic hair from the girl that crushed on him. That’s why his drink was darker than the others at the table. Also, bear has A LOT of fat. So he suffered big time.
I'm just saying this because you missed it. That love story in the beginning where you see the girl's private part, it's all connected with that scene with Christian eating the pie with pubes inside and if you look again, you notice that his drink was different from everyone else because Maya put her period blood in his drink. I don't like Christian, but people like to miss the fact that he got drugged many times before she slept with Maya, so they basically r*ped him. They did all that so that Dani would not wanna leave because she lost her family, her friends and she thinks her boyfriend cheated on her when he didn't. People keep saying she has a happy ending when she's in trapped in this cult.
Watch the directors cut. It shows Christian knew exactly what was going to happen. He literally consented to the whole mating scene. Don’t know why people think them giving him drugs someone makes it rape.
Hello from Sweden! I love this film, seeing it in the cinema here in Sweden was hilarious, but it's honestly a really well researched film. The clothes and music and general aesthetic is very similar to our folk style, it's not exact but very clearly inspired by our culture. The community is actually named after a folk song, Hårgalåten, in which the devil dresses up as a fiddler and makes the young dance until they die, similarly to their dance around the May pole. Ättestupa was a custom from the viking age. When someone grew old enough to be a burden they could have an honorable death by jumping off a cliff. The Blood Eagle was also a torture method from viking age. They opened up the spine and pulled out the lungs while the person was still alive. Really, the least authentic part of this film is the nature. It wasn't filmed in Sweden, and you can tell.
@@ineverreplyback I wouldn't say it was very effective for torture. Torture is usually implemented to get someone to confess or disclose something, and I don't think you could talk with your lungs outside your back. Seems better for the purpose of sending your enemies a 'don't fuck with me' message. In this instance, though, it seems like they're doing it just to be dicks.
Another swede here. There is no real evidence that Ättestupa were actually a real thing people did. But it certainly is part of the myths in Sweden, so I agree that it's inclusion is a sign of good research.
At 12:05 - I understand that you are completely disturbed by the suicide and the graphic impact. Part of the piece that you missed was when Pelle described the Harga life cycle. From birth to 18 years, the folks are kids: they call that "Spring." From 19-36, they go out and explore the world (going to college and grad school), and they call that "Summer." (The fact that our protagonists are all mid-twenty-somethings means that they are symbolically living in "Midsummer.") From 37-54, they toil, whether they farm, make the food, build the buildings, whatever it is they do; they call it "Autumn." From 54-72, they mentor the younger ones of all ages, and they call this "Winter." Dani asked Pelle, "What happens after 72?" Pelle made a gesture like slitting his throat. No one took it seriously but Josh, who did his homework, and asked, "Are they really going to...?" Pelle nodded enthusiastically. This is all context you are missing for skipping over it.
I thought it was genius how A24 was able to make people believe Christian was the villain even after the movie was over when it was always Pelle. The cult not only brainwashed Dani but they brainwashed most of the audience.
3:30 What Happened? Me: Her sister Terri, basically used two gardening hoses taping them shut to car exhaust pipe. Her sister taped one of the hoses under the parents bedroom door.
