- So 100 miles done! lots of minor things to improve, no footage yet as the weather has been horrid. Drives so well I am well chuffed.
Suspension is SUPER hard! Will need to work out what needs adjusting, few knocking noises to sort out...
Can't wait for the car footage on the road, well done Dave, it's looking great!
Yes just need some decent weather!!!
props to these vids dave. your documented experiences here is a much valuable resource. all the best going forward!
Cheers bud, just upgrading to double the power ;o)
Hi Dave, all sounds good to me. Interesting about the motor and inverter temps. I guess I will be needed a secondary heat source
Yeah I’m going to plumb the cooling into the cabin system, then if that’s rubbish I’ll add a heater element!
Great watching all your hard work and planning coming together, looks fantastic, ^oo^
Yeah it is fun to drive knowing all the work that’s been done
Great effort and you’re now reaping the benefits!
Cheers Simon, just a few tweaks and she’ll be ready for the first upgrades!
Nice to have it on the road, thanks for this series! The thing about the battery pack moving a bit destpite it being heavy is to be expected. The friction is proportional to the weight but so are all the driving forces (braking, cornering, accelerating and the bumps in the road) thanks to our friend Isaac Newton. So a coin would theoretically move as much as a battery pack
Yeah, I’ll get it fixed down, probably should have from the start to be fair!
Add a time delay for powering down the Pas etc that way when you turn ignition off contactors will open but your emergency (12v) systems will still be active for a while or add an emergency stop button that powers down the inverter and pops contactors
Yeah I think that’s what the drive toggle will be, may even put an emergency hv cutoff in there too
How the heck did a loose HV battery pass MOT inspection? That is a crazy crash hazard!
Love the build, but that MOT check was a joke!
Yeah not really sure tbh!!! That aside your inverter upgrade is high on my list of to do’s
Excellent 👍
Cheers stu
Ive been loving seeing this. I was originally going to attempt a G35 conversion but there seems to be a lot more aftermarket support for the 8. But I noticed the ev motor seems bigger than the renesis, have you noticed a difference in handling? Or is it mainly the same? Thanks for all your input btw!
So the main difference is caused by the batteries at the front. But ill be honest (as a previous owner of an rx8) the car understeered at low speed, and this extra weight has actually made the nose more pointy - but I did replace the suspension so that might also have had an effect. Still handles really well.
@@SouthWestEVUK Ah thanks for the honest opinion, definitely helps with my build. Love the progress im noticing through the years!
Maybe soften the suspension before re-bracing and cutting the cross member etc. Obviously I've not driven it but could it be that?
Yes - I have actually since recording that, it was set 100% hard!! It’s now 75% soft 25% hard and a much nicer drive!
That's so cool !
Cheers!!
Are you gonna be doing the resulting price breakdown?
Yes that’s a good idea, a video on the costs!
Why don't u convert the power from the main battery down to 12 volt and remove the car battery? Doesn't make sense fo keep the car battery since you'll be charging 2 batteries rather than 1 pack. Or u charging on the move?
You need the 12v battery to operate the relays, and the relays turn the main HV pack on. It is a bit chicken and egg... Plus the 12v battery is required to power the PDM to start charging - again if you had low power in the HV pack you might not be able to operate the charging system so dead in the water. The PDM in this charges the 12v battery when the car is in use, and the 12v battery then runs all the cars systems. All EV's to my knowledge have a 12v battery as well as the HV pack.
@South West EV UK okay perhaps u have it charge on the go so u don't have to forever recharge the car battery
I've got an RX8 R3 I don't think I could downgrade its power and range. Having said that it's something I couldn't afford u guess it costs a stack
How many batteries?
Nissan Leaf pack, so 24 cells
Banging build Dave love it!! Any chance you could help me with Nisan leaf cells going in my aprilia? 😆
Haha whats the problem!
