- Luciano Pavarotti sings Questa o quella from act I of Verdi's Rigoletto. He is a bit past his vocal prime here... But he turns in a wonderful performance in a role which he was unsurpassed in (in my opinion).

He's so ridiculously good, I just laugh at the end of these clips, it helps the goosebumps go down.
I know, it’s just so effortless! Like in your head you know how high the notes are and how difficult it must be to sing all of those Italian consonants in a languid, legato fashion. But you watch him and it’s like it’s nothing, like it’s a walk in the park! Other tenors are straining, but him? Heck, he’s having fun😂 Just amazing🤩

This is a superb live version of Pav doing this role! I like the fact that he (and the other singer) is cracking up with laughter briefly at 1:36 while singing and then asserts his focus and carries on without dropping anything. This is a fun, colorful and vocally rich performance.
many may not agree or be angry to see your honest comments, because most of the cds were done later in his career. I happen to grab a few songs at 60's and 70's, his timber was so rich and youthful. Reminder of Jussi in some way. I totally see your thoughts and agree. Yet this aria live was done so perfect by him, merry youthful energy handsome in every sense, perfect Duke. To compare vocies between so many great tenors have been in the past is very difficult in the way to say "this is the best tenor". BUt, to me, helps when I say to my self: like wich tenor would you like, not to sound, but to sing. Looking relaxing and naturally way like speaking, I just answer to my self: Like Pavarotti

I like this version of Pavarottis performance more than in the cinematic version. In the cinematic version, he comes off simply as a big kid having a laugh. In this one, he is more seductive and threatening
this is younger him, and of course, he is not a movie star, totally agree with you. Not a great movie anyway.

I just listened to a recording of Pavarotti from a few years later singing this very aria in a concert. He was significantly worse for the wear in the later recording, and frankly sounded a bit bored. This is excellent.

The most beautiful, natural tenor voice ever. The best, natural singing technique ever. The best intuition ever when it comes to Italian songs and operas. There will never be anyone like him. All the singers trying to hit the high tenor notes with their baritone voices, shut it down, go home.

@sopranosd Many tenors go sharp from B-flat and up in order to find the easier resonance. It's obviously very tricky to sing so high, and many find the sweet spot to be a bit sharp depending on the note. And every voice is different. You can hear Pavarotti in this performance, find a better resonance somewhere between 2:07-08.

Komisch. Früher (als junger gesangsstundent) hab ich Pavarotti rauf und runter gehört, und war für mich auf einer gewissen art das Maß aller dinge im tenorgesang.(das war natürlich im Nachhinein gesehen dem übertriebenen merkantilen Medienhype alla 3 Tenöre geschuldet) Heute stehe ich seinem singen eher kritischer gegenüber. Überspannte vocalgebung, daher extrapolierte klangfarbe etc.etc. von adäquater Rollen Darstellung braucht man gar nicht reden. Ein Star halt 😉
