If your ancestors died to defend slavery, even though they never owned slaves, seems more like a reason to hate that flag.
Smh…all you have to do is read the secession documents. They are part of historical documents. Each state drafted a “This is the reason why I’m seceding aka leaving the union”. They specifically reference slavery. The specifically state that one of the reasons they decided to leave is because they want the right to continue slavery. They literally wrote it themselves.
Individual people do not go to war; states go to war. Multiple state governments in the South cited the right to own slaves in their declarations of secession from the Union. The feelings of individual soldiers being different from that does not change what the intent of the States was. The States gathered their armies to go to war in order to protect the right to own other people, full stop.
Slavery is an issue that requires tap dancing around the subject, in order to justify it...

Nobody can dispute that the Civil War was about slavery. It's accurate to say the Union wasn't fighting to end slavery, as their main goal was to reunify all the states. But the main reason the Confederate states seceded was to be able to keep slaves. People can try to dispute it, but it's right there in the articles of secession. I'm from Mississippi, and I know my state's articles of secession clearly states the reason for seceding.

Flying the Confederate only means you're supporting a heritage that tried really hard to keep slavery. There's no other interpretation.

Is it not within your grasp to get why there were those who were against working human beings from sunup to sundown, against papers of ownership (ownership!) for these same overworked people whose children or loved ones might be sold off at any time? Did you know that during that time, Mississippi, now one of the poorest states in the union, was the Richest state in the union due to cotton and Free Labor? It was definitely about money- the money Free Labor brought in to wealthy plantation owners. And it was Forty Acres and a Mule and most got cheated out of that because they weren’t allowed to read and write when enslaved and couldn’t defend themselves from legal theft.

You was right about the expansion to the west-coast but It all started with a gold rush begin and southern plantation owners wanted to expand slavery to the west so they could dig it up gold for them. The north didn’t want black people to touch it because they only wanted to keep slavery in the south to use it as an a commodity for sugarcane in all of the sorts of goods throughout the world. They never wanted to get rid of it but the north didn’t want to expend it. They did use 40 acres and a mule as a weapon to have African Americans to fight in the war but never was granted to them. The civil war was definitely fought for slavery because the southern states wanted to secede from America just because they couldn’t get there way with slavery and the north was like”hell no”. When the confederacy was beating the union, the union decided to make a proclamation to sit all slaves free if they betray the confederacy. To destroy within you have break the system. That’s stupid to tell someone to go back to Africa when it was 400 years in America, not 87 years. That’s generations upon generation and you telling someone to go to foreign countries that they don’t know. African-American slaves build major cities and the White House which the should enjoy the fruits of their labor. Btw, Mexican and Native American are two totally different race of people. Canadian here. Not everything historical has to be celebrated. Canadians, my countrymen of the past, contributed to Native American genocide. We treated Natives like second-class citizens and still do to this day. That's all history, but I'm not proud of any of it. Now, I'm pretty sure fighting a treasonous war in the name of racist slavery isn't something to be proud of either.

First. I'm southern born and southern bred.
The Confederate Flag most people understand is actually Battle Emblem. Yes. I've got a couple in my collection. Along with both actual Confederate Flags. And Confederate State's Flags as well.
I've owned my Flags for decades. Along with older State's Flags and US Flags.
I don't wave them proudly. I own them for their historical value.
The US is an outlier concerning monuments. We allow monuments to traitors and the losers. Just about every southern town has at least one monument to the Confederacy. Although it's slowly changing. Put the monuments in museums and cemeteries. Stop publicly flying any Confederate Flags.
Lastly. I was disturbed and disgusted on January 6th when for the first time a Confederate Battle Emblem was paraded though the halls of the US Capital. Paraded by traitors and insurrectionists.
The only places for the Flags is in private collections and museums.
The only places for monuments is cemeteries and museums.

candace misses the point when she tries to argue that not everyone in the south had a sl-ve. that's irrelevant. the fact that every person of colour in the south at the time was a sl-ve, very much relevant.
And every person who DIDN'T have a slave would have loved to have one and believed it was a value and person's right to have one. So yet another reason why not owning one was irrelevant as well.

And on the confederate flag. One, the flag of those who committed treason against the United States of America. Two, the majority of those who go around waving that flag have no knowledge of their own history. For the most part their ancestors were also enslaved by the plantation capitalist who poorly paid them for their day long labor, robbed them of their profits on the crops they produced with that labor, and robbed them again at the plantation owners stores when purchasing essential goods to maintain life for themselves and their children. That's the form of slavery prevalent in the United States today which is the wage slavery perpetrated on every working class American from middle management down. So did the plantation owners take the South into an insurrectionist war against the United States to retain slavery as a means of personal wealth. Yes, and that slavery included these flag wavers ancestors.

Actually members of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma were an exception in having owned black slaves. Upon emancipation when the Civil War ended, the freed slaves were made enrolled members of the Cherokee Nation, including their descendants for generations to come. They are on what is known as the Dawes Roll.

The confederate flag is not a symbol of the South. My southern ancestors fought for the United States of America in what the 1890 census of USA military veterans referred to as "the war of the rebellion".

The Confederacy was the first to enact compulsory military service. A draft was necessary due to the poor planning on the part of the Confederate government.
At the time, the South had a very poor communication (and education) infrastructure as well. With many whites being illiterate while consistently being brain-washed with white-supremacist fundamentalist-based religion(s) (Southern Baptist, etc). All this was done on purpose in order to uphold and proliferate the slave trade.
Plights that still effect Southern states to this day.

Just because the rank and file soldiers didn't own slaves doesn't mean they weren't fighting to support slavery. It's not like the children of Haliburton and ExxonMobil executives are out there fighting today's wars. The Confederate Flag is a symbol of hate and oppression, if that is the only thing you can associate with your grandparents then maybe they shouldn't be memorialized. The Nazi flag represents an element of German History but its still illegal to publicly display one outside of a museum setting where it can be given context.

While the individual soldiers from the South may not have fought for slaves the war was indeed being fought for the continued right to own slaves. Like most all wars the soldiers fighting it would get nothing themselves win or lose. It is the wealthy leaders who get the benefits of winning any war.
