Flumes were ditches that they used for logging back in the old timey days. They would dam up a creek fill the pond with logs then blow a hole in the dam and wash the logs down the flume.
Exactly the comment I was looking for. That's why when you go to an amusement park and you go on certain water rides they're called a flume rides.
Nick thanks for the explanation! I have always heard about the Flume Trail in Tahoe...now that I just bought me my first new Mt Bike in about 25 years, this Summer I finally will plan to ride it. But on this adventure my new bike has BATTERIES! Yea!

Have you guys ever considered using a Whoop band? Would be cool to see Mackys heart rate, daily strain, recovery, sleep and such on these races. Awesome work Macky! So impressive!

A "flume' is a man-made earthen or wooden structure used to move logs (or other material), by water, from high elevations to lower elevations. In the day, there were very many elaborate structures that were built to connect and bridge gaps in the terrain. The more you know.

I am still pissed that they didn't start you in the front on day 1. This is the first race that a national champ starts in the back. I am surprised that Niner did not create a special bike for you, instead of a sticker pack. Forget my rant, I'm stupid.

Something about a real race that makes these binge worthy. Don’t get me wrong. I loved the crazy solo challenges you did during the last year. Everesting etc. but you two are made for racing. Syd praying for your full recovery so you can race again too. You two make a great team!

You desend like a maniac! Which is why you have broken some bones racing...I give you credit for that awesomeness! I'm in the Mr Schultz and Mr Franklin category though....and since I just got a total shoulder replacement last December 21...and 70 years experienced on this 3rd rock, I gotta take it easy!

In California gold country, flumes are wooden pipes or boxes to carry water for the hydraulic mining hoses. some areas still have remnants of the old boxes or else just the supports sticking out of the sides of the cliff.

@16:00 I know that flume trail, I rode it last year, when the fall color was at its peak there, was quite the experience. Need to get back and ride Breck again when the trees turn.

Smashing the competition 💪. I'm liking the look of this event so far obviously couldn't keep up even down hill but two day's in and looks well within my levels..... apart from the huge climbs 🤣. Passing those on geared bikes must be a little soul destroying. Go's to show all that time training and been fully committed pays off. Well done MACKY 👏👌

Nice job! I don't know how you guys do the SS on rides like that. A friend of mine just rode the LeadBoat double on a Niner SS. Carbon bikes. Knees of steel. Also those Skratch rice cakes are ridiculous. I'm going to try my hand at the homemade version from the Portables cookbook. Less sugar. Rock on!

Not really a recipe, just mixed the ground turkey, some bread crumbs, parsley, some feta and an egg (duck in this case).

I recognized some of the trails from previous times, but the last time I raced Breck was 8 years ago, so pretty much racing blind.

Hey! Love your Chanel. Any way you could put some pressure on Niner to get their act together. I have had a warranty claim in process since June 4 and a confirmation of replacement since August 23 and the warranty replacement frame has still not shipped and can get niner on the phone.

What is the logic behind the bags? I mean, they look pretty large. You could load them up with every possible thing. Is there a weight limit or something constraining what goes in to them? Or is it a time thing?

Yeah, you could put a ton in there, but because different bags go to different aid stations, you'd need to have 3 of each item which most people don't...

Ben (the 2nd place SS guy) was running one. Personally I've never tried one, but don't think they necessarily provide an advantage because if they did, all the pro road and XC teams would be running them, but they aren't 🤷♂️

How are you dealing with and changing camera batteries during these long races? My hero 9 gets 1.2hrs max per battery.
I turned it on and off throughout the races, so never needed more than 1 battery (although I did have an extra in each aid bag).
Personally (so take with a big grain of salt) I don't care much for POV riding videos. I just skip forward most of the time. I DO like anytime you are talking while riding, and basically everything else about your guys. Did the announcer say you are 45 minutes ahead? Holy smokes! I probably skipped past it at some point, but what was your gear ratio of choice?
Do you ever lock your rear wheel when braking? :)
As little as possible as it's harder on the trail and on your tire and generally is slower than braking without skidding.
I am not up on the rules so please forgive the question: if you place tenth overall, how can you still earn the leader's Jersey? Not a criticism- I'm just interested.
Good question and obviously we weren't clear enough in the video. There are lots of different categories and the leader in each one gets a leader's jersey. As the leader of the men's single-speed category, I get to wear the leader's jersey for that category. I ALSO finished 14th overall (out of all the racers) the first day and 12th overall the second day, but that doesn't actually matter, it's just notable because single-speed is a disadvantage on certain parts of the race courses (specifically flat sections).
