- More than 30,000 have escaped from North Korea and settled in South Korea. But the residents from North Korea still seem distant. A young South Korean man majoring in North Korean studies has applied for a homestay at the home of a man who escaped from North Korea 10 years ago.

What a beautiful family they are! I cried when the mum said how she wants to drive to North Korea to see her family if the borders ever open and got her driver's licence when that time comes. The dad should be very proud of what he has done for his family. Also Dong-han was so lovely and open. I really enjoyed watching their friendship grow and wish them the best ❤

As a German citizen, I can relate. We were separated for decades, before the wall fell in 1989. I have made friends with Eastern german people. They had a harder life than us.
True its very similar but only difference is that North Koreans have been forced to obey and worship 3 generations of the fattest Kim family in all of Korean history.

No matter the country, people will always make a difference. I am French Vietnamese, born and raised in Europe, but I haven't visited the Motherland yet. Among Vietnamese, they still inquire whether you are from the North or South. I am a mix of both, and some people hold prejudices against North Vietnamese.
I am from east Germany. I was 16 when the wall came down. And people still make a difference between west and east.
I can absolutely relate to North Koreans.

I'm happy to see that Park Yusung is doing well. He even learned to speak English and often gives speeches about refugees from North-Korea to educate people (search youtube and google if you're interested). I hope his father and mother are doing well too. Such a warm, loving, beautiful family!

the way that the guest seemed like a certified son of the family in the end just brings me in tears mann, the mother-son dynamic between the guest (being the youngest) and the mother, the son and the guest’s banter just like any sibling, and the father who is happy receiving gifts from his sons🫶
This was so eye-opening. It's so important to see this; humans just being humans. Regardless of superficial things that "divide" us, empathy and kindness can connect us all.

@@Bess1201 I've had great conversations & friendships with people of different religions. I'm not religious myself, but we share a mutual respect for each other.
Perhaps the key is to be humble & respectful enough to not want to force others to be like you. I wish more people acted this way.
@@chrissycxc4909 look, I'm nearing 50 and I believed as you did when I was younger... I still am the way you describe, I still have respectful and interesting conversations with people of different faiths. I myself am an agnostic, so there is no danger of me forcing anyone to have my 'faith' anyways. But as nice and good as contacts and conversations were and still are, as soon as things like in October happened, (for example) there is barriers from their sides because they believe in a certain book and religion and thus can not tolerate different views from others concerning specific topics. That doesn't change that I am still in contact with them, it just narrows the topics because for them it's not possible to discuss them , so we have to leave them out. So, my opinion remains like I said before, it all goes as long as religion doesn't come in between.

Watching Yu-sung talk about always receiving things from his Dad and noticing how much older the two have become since living in South Korea made me so emotional. I really feel that, even though our situations and daily lives are different. It's always good to be reminded of how important family is and to always appreciate those special people around you because time does go by too quickly :(
I think this is probably in the top 5 of all the documentaries I have ever watched. It actually has some really good lessons and things in it and tells a really good story.

@@irrose1185 I love the documentaries "most dangerous way to school". It always has some life lessons, courageous families and children, incredible landscapes and most of all, reminds us how important education is.
I also love the documentaries about Yakut's life!
Being a refugee is not a crime, it’s the society that creates unnecessary prejudices. Being different is what makes human beings special but at the same time we all bleed, eat, shit the same. I was amazed by how the mother never controlled her motherly instincts. She treated the guest like her own son and made him feel at home from day one to the last day. Wishing this family the best in their endeavors and success!!
What I noticed. There were no tv , internet, social media, negative distractions in that house it was filled with love and laughter..........and most of all they all spent quality time together it was beautiful and made me cry.. The mum and dad were lovely people.

I’m not sure how RUclips worked its magical algorithm and decided this video was just right for me but I very glad it did. This has been one of the most interesting, informative and inspirational videos I have seen in quite awhile. I would really like to see a follow up video of these same people a year or so later to see how their life journey has continued.
Thank you to all the people who made this program possible. I sincerely hope that more people will be inspired to come together and get to know people who are different so that maybe one day we can all learn to be one great family.

Me also. It’s good to know how other people live and learn to respect each other. As Italian immigrant to Australia I can relate to prejudices experienced by NK family but with time everything is accepted Thank you to all involved 🌻🌻
the son could be an actor, he got the look. I think this family is family of beauty, the mom is pretty so is the father plus he got the humor haha
I was just going to take a glance at this video but couldn't stop watching. I was very touched by the son's narrative when he took his father to buy a suit, by the mother missing where she came from and the food, by the father's humble words and the man who came to stay with them for two weeks. I pray blessings over each one. May God Almighty answer your deepest yearnings.
The son is quite attractive. when he smiles he looks a bit like Park Seo-Joon.
I genuinely appreciate this documentary highlighting the struggles of people from the North as they begin anew in the South. The younger generation can learn a lot from their elders, and I hope they can remain friends forever.
I was born on the west side of Germany and can relate to this, what a beautiful story! I do really hope one day both sides can reunite as one Korea as we did in Germany!
I'm also from Germany and experienced the borderline case when I was younger. I was about 11th, so it passed me by quite unspectacularly. When I was 15 I met my husband and as fate would have it, he was born and raised in the DDR / East Berlin. He is only 3 years older than me, but our childhood, the experience and memory could are more different than you might think , even if small things are similar, there are many differences.But it also shows the different life experiences and cultures/interests ect. to be able to live, love and grow together! I wish that more people would want to live WITHOUT borders!

The whole thing is so wholesome. I don't have deep words because my thoughts machine is overwhelmed. I'll keep this video preciously in my favourite forever.
The whole family is very handsome too. I want to sit and talk with the parents. They smile a lot. The son is very charming and I am impressed by his assertiveness, it makes me want to be lead by him.
I can note down many things from this short slide of life. But today, as a frequent traveller who likes to stay at the house of local families' to learn about the culture of a country, one thing Yusang says stucks to me :
"he didnt learn anything crazy about North Korea, he just got to know my parents and me".
This is really what it is about : the people.
And their hearts.

I was just scrolling and this documentary popped up. I’m so glad it did and that I watched it. So many moving, touching and heartwarming moments; it was wonderful to witness a deepening friendship.
This episode is now a favorite of mine and I’ve shared it with many others. I hope the two “sons” build a lasting friendship and that the mom gets to make that drive home. What a beautiful and inspiring story.

This family is filled to brim with hope, and true joy. I'm so impressed by the mother, and find it a pleasant surprise how relatable they are. Just humans being humans, I guess. Simple as that. Thank you to the production, editing, writers, and film team for creating this wonderful documentary. This documentary popped up & I am so very glad it did. Like another commenter stated, I needed it too. I was born in Kassel Germany & as a kid I remember so much. In 1989, when the wall came down, it was personal & joyful. I am only in hope that reunification between N & S Korea will happen so families can reunite. What a beautiful thing that would be. This documentary was truly special & I shed tears as I listened to the family speak but also the grandmother, her memory is so vivid & she was so very young when the split happened. Being surrounded by good people helped her survive, that is beautiful. The family had so much weight on their shoulders that they should not had to have carried. The dad & his struggle especially how he was treated in the N broke my heart because we do not think of such things but they happen. While it took 10 years, this special family has a multitude of support from those they do not even know & I am happy the documentary made it possible for us to see. ❤ I truly would like to see how they are doing & how our guest is doing as well, what a life lesson.
My dad was from the same hometown region as their family. I still haven't met anyone from that region in-person. I'd love to meet this family since I'm in 🇰🇷 now until after the holidays. (I realized this was filmed before COVID-19.) If anyone can please put me in contact with this family, would love to meet them! 🤞🏻

To see this as a foreigner from Europe. It touched my heart. I'm so proud of them for being brave. I wish to see more of these documentaries with South and North Koreans, to hear new stories. As we can see North Koreans are not to much different from South, as they said like neighbors. Thank you for this eye-opening film. Now we can know little bit more about Korean culture.
This right here is the best video of 2023. The best thing I saw online this year and I'd definitely love to see a follow up. They bonded so much and it just gladdens me to know that there's hope for the future. People need to start seeing that regardless of skin color or race, we're just the same. Every single one of us.
I love how Dong Han sees them as his new family and not just strangers. I love how open he is to N. Koreans ❤❤❤ I pray that someday they would unite too ❤❤❤
I think that there need to be more shows like this. What a beautiful family and it was so heart warming to see how their friendship developed. At the end, they looked like a family and the boys looked like true brothers❤. I hope that someday, the North and South can at least be civil and open their boarders for families to see each other.
Interesting video. Just started watching. As a Koryoin I hope that eventually our nation will achieve a reunification beneficial to both Koreans in the North and in the South, as well as abroad!

I love this so much. I cheered when the mom passed her test, and I was so happy her new 'son' was there to celebrate with her. They are family now. I wish for each of them every happiness.
This is so beautiful. The way that the family made the guest be part of the family really quick, it's incredible.
Also I must admit I find the North Korean boy very handsome and beautiful in soul, he went through a lot and still is a polite, sensible and nice person, with a beautiful smile. I admire that courage.

What a heartwarming documentary.Especially at a time when we can do with no prejudices, respecting, tolerating and understanding one another. I loved the mother and her instant affection towards Shin Dong- han as if he was her own son. Mothers are all the same no matter where you from❤.Love the fact that the younger ones could bond too and build a friendship. It felt like a bittersweet moment when Kim Yu-sung (eomma) said she hopes her father would still be alive if they get to cross the border to visit in the event of the unification of both sides.Beautiful documentary but at the same time this is their every day lives

What helps is the NK family has positive vibes. Their mentality in blending and learning portrays them in good light. Often NK are portrayed in a negative way. They have emerged from a lot of pain and naturally it's not easy to open up. I hope the NK son makes it to be a producer👍🏻 And the SK boy, credos for showing respect and humility.
Would be nice to show various family types and personalities living together.

I think you're misunderstanding something here. North Koreans have never been portrayed negatively. North Koreans and the North Korean government are two different things....

This kind of experience is so important for people to learn and explore about people they think as different it'll be easy to know that they are similar in many ways although their culture and lifestyle can be different but the feelings will be similar.
