I have the exact model of this trap and the jury is still out on its effectiveness. On the first day of using it I watched 3 European starlings immediately enter the trap and they all moved to the second chamber and did not escape. Others immediately began to enter the trap and I was I watched through the security camera, I was shocked to see about a dozen starlings over a 10 minute span just walk in, eat, and walk right out the way they came in. I had to adjust the prongs repeatedly until I had it just right. By the end of day 1 I had caught almost 20 starlings. The trap remained effective for another two days, catching another dozen or so. But on day 4 I didn’t see a single starling enter the trap. Groups of them were still hanging around but none would go near the trap anymore. I have now removed the trap and I’ll try again a bit later… seemed amazing at first but the darn birds figured out what’s going on.
Here's my review. I bought this trap because during this year's breeding season our backyard sparrow population at our feeders jumped to near 50 and some are still breeding. As you can imagine, they are eating through suet, eating nyger, eating everything. We decided we needed to trap and cull. We caught 17 birds in the first 5 days. Not one male though that are the most aggressive ones. At least not so far. However, I think it could be made better. We found many birds didn't know how to get into it and it would have been better to have a top entrance in addition to the sides. As the birds view the bait from the top of the cage mostly. The ones who did go in would often walk out the other side without going in the second chamber. Also, we have never gotten 12 birds at one time, the most was five. But we will see if this changes. We came up with creative things like hanging a piece of bread in the second chamber entrance to entice them in and placing seeds in the path of the two outside entrances into the trap so they could see the entrance when foraging on the ground. I think it will take another two weeks to trap most or all of our 50 sparrows. We have to manage our expectations a bit with this trap. And baiting the trap and removing birds resulted in blood and scratches on my arms and hands. You need to wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt or jacket due to the sharp wires on the trap. I strongly recommend this to everyone. Don't go in with bare hands or short sleeves or you will take your hand out covered in scratches and blood from the wiring. Overall, I give the trap 3 stars out of five. Good but not great. Update: was able to catch upwards of 12 to 15 at one time. Some were house finches and juncos. We release all native birds, including native sparrows such as white throated. Cover the entrance with cardboard or the tray of a hand broom as you reach in with one hand. We did have a couple of escapees but not many. but you have to be careful to block the trap door as you reach in. I lost track at 100, but I think I caught about 135 sparrows the first spring/ summer I bought the trap. If you cannot tell the difference between house sparrows and native sparrows and lookalikes such as pine siskins, house finches, purple finches, song sparrows, tree sparrows and white throated sparrows DO NOT buy or use bird trap, as many native sparrows are ground feeders.
It would have bee far more helpful if you demonstrated it in action? Thanks, looks like a tidy design. I'm just one of those people who needs to see it working, I'm in the market for a new system to review.
How do you catch them in the trap? I’ve trapped 7 but 5 have escaped when I try to grab them. The opening is too big. I tried putting a bag on the end of the opening but they won’t fly into it.
Fill a large plastic storage container with water and submerge the cage in it. Wait a few minutes..Then you can just reach in and grab them no problem.
I have this exact piece of garbage and haven't caught a single thing in it even after adjusting the prongs... It's a hunk of junk and it doesn't work...
I was only able to see sparrows and house finches go in. I am sure chipping sparrows and gold finches could fit but none went in. I don't think cardinals could fit so no worries with those.
To all the people that trap to kill - I honestly wish you the worst of luck in life. Also, if there is such a thing as hell, I hope you rot in it. I was looking at the traps to rescue a sparrow that's stuck in a shopping centre, and then I came across some of the comments. Disgusting.
Now if we could just get a trap for Humans. In order To deal with the 'Human Overpopulation' problem! That's much more prevalent - than the sparrow population problem!
The problem is stupid/lazy human overpopulation.. Get rid of stupid and lazy people the population flourishes.. One trap would be make humans work for there keep, quit giving them handouts for ridiculous lazy "disabilities"..
Yes, like the English House Sparrow and the European Startling, Pigeons are not native to the Americans and therefor are not protected "wildlife" as defined by law. Therefore reducing the population of 'nuisance' birds that kill our native birds, eat the grain from our farm fields and like the pigeons spread diseases harmful to humans is an honorable and 'legal' thing to do to help protect our native bird populations. However, I do not endorse anyone killing these birds in their 'Native' lands unless it is legal by the laws of that land.

How do you catch them once they are in the trap? The opening is so big most that have escaped when I put my hand in there to grab them.

block the opening with a tray of a hand broom. then open the tray slightly and slide your hand in.
