If you start with a compilation, that is always a good place to start. Also go to your public library and read everything you can find. I've been listening to Jazz since I was 12 and I am almost 30 now. Get ready for a wonderful adventure in sound!

The Late Great Sam Most with an all star line up of musicians. This record is so fabulous that it can be played for any Movie Theme T V Theme you name it.. Percussion Section back up musicians blend them all together with Sam Most and you have Exciting Jazz that gets better and better case closed.

dnaisinmybody Try Lalo Schifrin as he did on the Enter the Dragon Soundtrack and Mission Impossible. Also, Gil Scott Heron Angel Dust (and many others of his).
If you dig the great Sam, you might want to try and get his jazz exercise book, "Jazz Flute Conceptions" from Gwyn Publishing (Warner Bros. Publications, Inc.)
It's got cool exercises and each page is loaded with hip philosophical quotes from all kinds of cool sources. The guy was one of the real pioneers of jazz flute.

@dnaisinmybody A great way to discover new artists is this radio station I like to (i've been a fan of jazz for a long time and I'm trying to learn as much as I can) Try sky.fm (just google it or go straight to the web address) and you'll find they have Jazz of all sorts (good quality too!) as for this particular type of flute-funk-jazz, Try Herbie Mann st Germain Acid jazz( it's a song) or anything coming from herbie mann or Sam Most (Manu Dibango-ba kuba is also a good flute jazz song)Cheers
