I had this amp and it's ridiculously easy to drop the entire speaker assembly forward, it's literally one screw on either side of the amp (the one on the left side is behind the Fender logo on the side of the amp cabinet). Then 4 screws on the top to remove the amp assembly to pull it out to access the back side of the pots to do it right. I would spray the deoxit in the back of the pot slits, twist the knobs, let it sit over night so the crap drips out, the next night spray fader lube (part of the deoxit series), let it sit overnight, so all the crap drips out, then reassemble. Takes longer, but it will work the first time, and last.
Ya I was being lazy, and a couple of the jacks are brittle and have broken so I was avoiding them cracking again. but definitely would have made it easier
if you put a conveniently sized short piece of plastic tubing over the pot shaft you can get more solution in to the pot, just don't over do it, works with those stuoid little green marshall pots.
I have a yorkville MP8 with alot of knob noise ( it was awfull!) it had sealed pots.. so i removed the button put a little hose that fit tight on it ...sprayed a little electrical spray in the hose ..then put the hose to my lips and blew in the hose worked the button stem up and down ...IT WORKED....
Lol....I agree! I'm also glad that the liquid was sprayed 3 times till it actually did some work. A lot of times 'nothing' works on the first try, but this stuff came through and worked like a charm. A+
I have a Fender 85 with scratchy & dirty pots. I had this problem sometime in the early/mid 90s before interwebs. I took it to the shop whence it came and they charged me about $100 to clean the pots. I will be trying this and hopefully I will be back to making noise. Also, 1989, or 88 wasn't that long ago. 😕
Good video- good to know it can be done without spending half an hour pulling the amp apart and putting it back together again. As a beginner at electronics there’s also always chance you’ll accidentally break something and of course the inside of amps is very dangerous! I think it would’ve worked in one go if you’d sprayed more cleaner maybe 3 times turning the pot just 3 or 4 times between sprays. So good to know I should be able to clean my amps and stereos without spending half a day pulling them apart!!
You can make an adapter out of short piece of flexible tubing and a bit of RTV to fit over the bushing that will help more of the solvent to get into the pot. Does not work as well as going through the back but it does work better than trying to get to it from the front.
I find it best to lay the amp on its back while getting the De-Oxit into the pots via around the pot shaft. I use a syringe without a needle and slowly drip it into the shaft, work the pot 20 times, do more. Do each about 5 times like this and it's usually clean.
Oh my god thank you. I am a beginner guitarist and I found my amp and guitar at a yard sale for 20 bucks each. With help of my teachers and dad, the guitar had been fully restored but the amp was sitting in his attic for a long time and we didn't know how to fix it because it kept connecting and disconnecting and making the same scratchy sounds each time we tried to turn the volume up. Thanks man, this rlly helped alot :)
Thanks for the video got get some deoxit for sure for my old scratchy D85. The Fender Deluxe 85 was the first guitar amp I ever bought and still have/use it occasionally, it's been a good one.
Wow thanks so much for this tip, this has been a huge help! Both my amps (a Line6 Spider and a Marshall bass amp) were ones I bought on the used market at roughly half the retail price, and both had this problem to some degree. I don't have Deoxit, so went with compressed air for now, and it seems to work just as well if the crackling isn't too severe. Simply removing the knobs and spraying the pots from outside has saved me a lot of time and effort! The Line6 Spider is now completely fixed, and I didn't need to take the amp apart at all. For the Marshall, the treble pot is still crackling a bit (but nowhere near as much as before, and all the other faulty pots are fixed), I'll try applying more spray tonight. I'm wondering: would covering the amps protect them from unwanted dust, and prevent this from happening again? I keep the guitars themselves in their gigbags, maybe I should do the same with the amps and invest in amp covers?
I have the same issue on my Peavey Classic 50. Was going to get some electrical contact cleaner but I’ll pick some of this up instead. Thanks Paul Rudd.
I inherited an EVH 5150 lbx head from my friend who passed away. He was a dear friend, but he kept a very dirty house. All the knobs were scratchy. I was lazy and just sprayed into the shaft without even removing the knobs, and it still worked….lol.Although next time i wont be so lazy. Every guitarist should have Deoxit D5.
Thanks man, I have this problem on several knobs on my old Marshall Combo for maybe TEN YEARS and just left it on one setting, because it would also jump in volume in addition to the crackling. I nearly got this to a repair shop. This one hopefully saves me some bucks.
Well, to be honest, I picked a day where I could spend some time cleaning the inside of my amp head cause "all" the knobs were scratchy. I vacuumed first then sprayed DeoxIT on front and backs of the knob pots. Holy cows, worked like a charm! The guy who sold me my amp head and full stack sold it to me cheap cause of the static noise! However, I like the fact also that you can shoot the stuff in the front just by removing the knobs also. Like I said, I had "time" to do it my way, so I did it. This is good for the musician on the go! Cool vid as I needed to see this as I used DeoxIT about 20 years ago and I'd forgotten how to use it till now.....lol
IMO - you are doing it more thoroughly by disassembling the amp. You just have to try be careful not to touch capacitors that may be storing dangerously high voltage. Then you can spray into the back of the pot where there is often a tiny hole, especially in the older pots. That technique worked with an older Peavey amp I have. I also disassembled a used boss blues driver that was a lot newer & the pots are so tightly sealed that it is difficult to get the cleaner in there. Wish the piece of dust making the static had as difficult a time getting into the boss pot.
I can't tell you how happy I was to come across this vid. I'm having the same issue with my Tascam DP-32, and also My Tech21 Ultra 1000 bass head. I was freaking out until I found out about Deoxit. So the can arrived today, and I was looking on here trying to find the correct way to do, and I saw cats taking their boards apart, and one dude was dismantling the entire amp! Didn't want to go through any of that! Then I cam across your vid..you rule! I just did a test spray on the first trim knob, now I'm waiting to see if it worked. But based on what you did, I know this way will work Thanks!
bought my first decent amp today, Orange Crush 35rt sounds great but the crackling was driving me crazy. I thought id have to resolder the grounds or something. Thanks for this!
I think that you have a problem with cable from potencjometer , that cable coulded itself desolder itself from potentiometer and you must correct this so , this is very often problem in old amp and guitars :)
Does the amp need to be plugged into a guitar to make the scratching noise? I’m looking at a used amp and the seller doesn’t have one to test it with and He says it turns on, but this scratching is a known issue with the amp.
cool! save yourself a bit of time, and if you can get direct access to the pot, you'll probably need less spraying. :) I did it the harder way trying to spray in the front
I had a computer with a sound card that had a volume knob. it eventually sounded awful when you turn the volume up or down because of that scratchy sound. Really, who would expect a sound card in a computer to sound so bad? It makes me glad that newer computers don't have knobs. I know I never had a laptop with one anyhow.
Deoxit will destroy some potentiometers, sliders in particular. (The ones that use a plastic conductor instead of an actual carbon trace). Another product is Nutrol 401B which isn't as aggressive on plastics. Sliders sprayed with Deoxit will become very stiff and hard to move, but there is a fix. Deoxit makes a product called Fader Lube (comes in a tube) which will restore that silky smooth feel in a slider. Have fun fixing amps!
I hope this stuff fixes the Focusrite. The gain and monitor knobs were crackling very badly. So it’s on the second application and drying now. Turn it on and pray! 😅
let me know as i got a peavey 65 bandit with the same issue im scared to test how bad it is now . also im trying to sell mine but worried this issue might impact value alot is this true ?
This is good thanks. I have seen other videos saying you have to open the amp, but i hope this will work for mine, although the problem is there is no sound coming out at all LOL. But it has to be from just sitting as i didn't do anything else to it. The only thing missing for me in the video is more info about what the spray is you're using and where to get it. Yeah that's what Google is for but that's how i got here LOL
Yes. I've used it for years and it works just fine. Make sure to not use a lot of it. and don't spray anything into your gear while it is plugged in and powered on.
I’m fretting metallic scratching noise that sounds like metal slid across concrete but nothing bad with the knobs, just when I play loudly and especially on the bass notes of the guitar. Any ideas?
Would this be the issue for a 65 super reverb amp with some nobs including the vol doing this but also when you turn the reverb nob on it sounds like cracking and almost like very quite thunder? But if I turn the reverb down completely the severe cracking noise is gone. The other just have it when adjusting but stop when you pick your vol but that damm reverb gets worse the higher I go.
I just bought a used peavy amp, and the knobs make lot of noise all around, would you think it's fixable with this stuff? Or wd40's version of electrical contact cleaner? Or would it be better to swap out the pots altogether? Or would it just be better to return it?
Ok, this worked great on my Marshall MG30, it fixed the scratchy noise on the volume. Although I still have a "pop" noise when powering on the amp. Anyone know if there is a fix for that?
If you don't spray as much it should be dried within 20-30 seconds Use *Deoxit* *F5* in the green can Do not use *Deoxit* *D5* in the red can. It will destroy the pot over time
I have a EVH 5150 III 1x12 and my pots are starting to do this but its super clean a 2016 Model i keep a towel thrown over the top when its not being played. so my guess is this is what i should do im scared ill spray to much or something never done this stuff before.
Not lame at all! Did Caig send you a congrat check? This is the best ad to their product! (I know you're not being paid to do it, but you should!). One question: did you notice any damage to the amp's finish and looks around the area where you sprayed it? I can see nothing imediately but how about over time - it's been nearly one year after you've used Deoxit on that pot. Thanks!
This only works temporarily for my peavey kb5 amp, spraying from the back in. works okay for a day or two, then scratches so bad i think its gonna explode.
hey Ive got the same amp only a bit smaller. I have the same problem and I have that problem on clean/distortion button as well. Can I use the same method there?
Brilliant, Thank You! Using WD40 for the same effect on the volume control of my ancient Bush valve radio - one squirt, no more scratchy pot. [for anyone who doesn't know, WD = Water Dispersal. 40 = 40th formulation.]
A few professional pedal repair guys told me that WD-40 is the worst substance because it actually dries out your pods and wires, whereas, Deoxit D5 cleans then lubricates those things
Hey! I have an ampeg ba500- it’s a beast! I’m already to take it apart after reading how dangerous it is in there- it’s solid state, but still. I took my caps off and nuts and washers and I still have static! 😣- I used D5. I can’t find a video on removing the head in the beast. Any advice? Other than taking it to some clown who can’t fix it either!
Sadly my amplifier pots don't look anything like that on the back, it's a square with some tiny holes and not this circle with the entrance where you can spray the contact cleaner...
I NEVER thought I'd actually see someone tel anyone to spray fro the OUTSIDE of the pot. It does NOT get in to the contacts. Trust me. You Must pul the amp from the case to access the pots directly. I hope no one ever does this. The right chemical can damage to front of your chassis and/or your skin. Also, where are your safety glasses? this stuff does spray back at you. Any way, stick to playing your instrument and leave the technical stuff to the people who know.
Additionally, doing it from the front can actually push dirty lubricant into the pots. I understand that this method can work, but every professional amp technician I've talked to advises against doing so.
I thought I would have to take my amp apart to spray in back of pots. But I tried this first. This totally worked. Thanks for saving me alot of work
I have a peavy envoy that sat for a long time and did this. It didn't look like there was any way for the contact cleaner to get inside, but it wrked.
I sprayed my wife with this and I don't hear a damn thing anymore.
She went straight back to her mother, so a huge result. Thanks Buddy.
oh man! you win for comment of the week. if I had a prize you would get it. lol take care

That’s 5 screws man…..
That's the only way to it, not this in video. This man actually sprays the knob.
Thank you for this!! I followed these exact steps and my wife's Fender Rumbler 25 amp is working perfectly now!!!
no problem thanks!
“This video is brought to you by me……..it’s my stuff…i bought it”.

Subbed.
hey cheers!
Works heaps better if you spray it into the pot from the back.
Stikibits im too lazy to pull it open! but I could understand why. thanks for the tip for sure
It goes to show how effective the stuff is that you can spray it through the tiny gap beside the shaft and have it work at all, I reckon.
Stikibits absolutely. the gap was tiny in the front. typically I've sprayed guitar pots, and ya from inside and not the front
I'm surprised it works like he showed! I was looking into how to clean sealed pots ... I guess I found the answear!
took your advice finally and did it that way ruclips.net/video/BGNxWfI0LQM/видео.html
Hey, remove the nut and washer before spraying. The product though is awesome. CRC connection cleaner and Deoxit seems to work best.

Sup?! Excellent video! Nice hit....(number 3. 😎) And not at all lame. Exactly what I was looking for.
Glad I could help
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Not lame at all! Did Caig send you a congrat check? This is the best ad to their product! (I know you're not being paid to do it, but you should!). One question: did you notice any damage to the amp's finish and looks around the area where you sprayed it? I can see nothing imediately but how about over time - it's been nearly one year after you've used Deoxit on that pot. Thanks!
hey thanks! it's such an old amp that isn't clean to begin with, so I didnt really notice any effect on the finish.
Fenders don't get old: they mature. ;)
Jolly good show, old chap. From "Limey Tim".
ha thanks!
Aye, sod off you Limey Jack Tar!
This only works temporarily for my peavey kb5 amp, spraying from the back in. works okay for a day or two, then scratches so bad i think its gonna explode.
Oh that’s bad. I’m sure there’s a point where pots can’t be saved and cleaned, and need to be replaced.
Got a scratchy knob? 🤤

hey Ive got the same amp only a bit smaller. I have the same problem and I have that problem on clean/distortion button as well. Can I use the same method there?
Have you noticed that the dexoit loosens the knob to much?
No haven't really experienced that. It feels a bit looser at first for sure, but not long term
Can a WD-40 work?
it's not recommended
Lay the amplifier on its back when doing this, and your cleaner will flow down into the pot instead of down the control face 😮
Good video man thank you now I know how y o fix mine thanks to you and here is my like
negui46togui hey thanks!
Hey there, wd40 will be fine for this?
there's a wd40 that's made for electronics, but don't use regular wd40

Brilliant, Thank You! Using WD40 for the same effect on the volume control of my ancient Bush valve radio - one squirt, no more scratchy pot. [for anyone who doesn't know, WD = Water Dispersal. 40 = 40th formulation.]
thanks! but I'm pretty sure it's not recommended to use wd40 on electronics
A few professional pedal repair guys told me that WD-40 is the worst substance because it actually dries out your pods and wires, whereas, Deoxit D5 cleans then lubricates those things
How about when it randomly shoots to full volume when you barely touch them
It's better if you opened the back and sprayed the slot (tiny hole) of the potentiometer. 100% the static noise will be eliminated!.
agreed. I've done both ways: ruclips.net/video/BGNxWfI0LQM/видео.html
Splashed it in my eyes, still didn't work. Now what?
I NEVER thought I'd actually see someone tel anyone to spray fro the OUTSIDE of the pot. It does NOT get in to the contacts. Trust me. You Must pul the amp from the case to access the pots directly. I hope no one ever does this. The right chemical can damage to front of your chassis and/or your skin. Also, where are your safety glasses? this stuff does spray back at you. Any way, stick to playing your instrument and leave the technical stuff to the people who know.

I've done both. pretty much the same results. temp fix.
Additionally, doing it from the front can actually push dirty lubricant into the pots. I understand that this method can work, but every professional amp technician I've talked to advises against doing so.
If the amp were laying down "face up" gravity would draw the juice inside better. Just a guess . . . But thanks for the tip.
maybe on earth!
yep
You're supposed to turn off the amp first and spray into the opening on the back of the pot.
I like to break the rules and make things more difficult than they need to be :P
lando27music haha just don’t get shocked
It’s ok I’m a highly unpaid amateur :P
you cant do that to a sealed pot...
