The US government spends 7 trillion dollars a year, if you had a 100% tariff that would be 4 trillion dollars. You do realize that it is the American public that pays the tariffs.
Tariff worked when the U.S. didn’t take care of all its people. You have to factor in: social security, Medicaid, and hundreds of agencies that include: infrastructure, education, science research, agriculture, feed people, government back loans to get houses, technology advancements, etc.. In over a 100 years, the U.S. has added more to our plate which is good for its citizens. But tariffs won’t be enough.

Chris, I would love to see the 2 party system splinter into a 5 party system. That would allow 3 of the parties to form alliances to get legislation passed. And it would make more sense to account for the complexity of our society. You would get a moderate party, parties that kind of carryon the current party platforms, a right wing party, and a left wing party. I just do not know how to get these two parties to splinter.

Unfortunately since 2016, the pointing out of the "flaws and foibles" has trickled down into every day discourse. Political debate has become all about the flaws. Maybe the change begins with us..what if we refused to accept it anymore? What if we elevated conversation and it spread down up.. maybe it would help them get the message. The next candidate that doesn't resort to mud slinging will like a beacon on a hill.

Hi Chris, You make some good points. I would also suggest a certain level of “know thy self” (psychological sophistication) is fundamental to function in this world. Most folks don’t like their work. So having some understanding of identity and function. A general understanding of one’s temperament and aptitudes. Why do you like fixing cars, “ extroverted sensation”. And then find folks who will encourage you in that work…. That is why career counseling may be beneficial. Some folks are what i would call, introverted sensation. They look for the “spirit inside matter”. They want to know the spiritual side of things. They are annoyingly curious in this regard. Where is the Godhead or Transcendent or meaning in this seemingly mundane situation? This is the “ introverted sensation “ individual. Some folks become priests, poets, philosophers, psychiatrists, psychotherapists etc. We are all so very different. “if religions are dropped down fully formed from some remote domain and deity, written in stone, unchangeable, and gifted to a very few, our future as a species will be very bleak.” Jerry Wright
